  • This is neat, but one problem you will have is dirt/sand working through any cracks/gaps//joints in the floor above, so be sure to use painters caulk or something to seal all of these cracks/gaps/joints before painting . . . I also suggest carpet runners (the width and length of the run) stapled into the runs without lights . . . this will help deaden sound from both above and below . . .

  • Great Idea. It's use in night clubs and restaurants quite a bit.

  • Thanks for the great idea - I'm going to finish off our laundry room \ storage room like this. Simple, cheap and actually very cool.

  • How did this turn out?

  • i love this idea honestly. its exactly what im wanting to do to our basement but we have insulation between our beams so im trying to figure out what to do with that.

  • I dont know...

I know this video was made a while ago and so the question is answered by know, but as I look at this video I just dont like the effect...

So what did you end up doing?

  • Hi, you asked for opinions and since I have been redoing my house several times over, here's my thoughts on your leaving joists exposed and using the bays for lighting after painting them black. I would not do it!for several reasons:

you don't gain any height cause you still have to deal with the joists hanging down.

    2. the lighting still has to hang down to deliver any kind of light into the room.

3 sheetrocking only eats up a half inch of space and you can paint it white and spread the lite

  • Yes, just spray everything flat black. Home depot sells pre-mixed cheap glidden brand flat black right off the shelf. Used 6 gallons for 650 sq feet. I sprayed mine with a wagner power painter. Was a tough job spraying overhead. Plan on throwing away your clothes when finished.

Black ceiling makes everything overhead sorta disappear. We were afraid it would make the ceiling look low and feel like a cave. Just the opposite happened. Feels big because its hard to see the ceiling now.

  • What about a flat black...like in bars and clubs etc.
