It is Joe Sample. Tom Scott is one of the BEST and most successful musicians in the world. People are afraid of musicians who are successful unless its bebop. I say if it good its good.
Is that Joe Sample on the keyboards? Looks very much like him, one of my all time fav pianist/keyboarders. Tom Scott is a wonderful sax player. I guess he fell a little into the mainstream reputation. Each time I mention Ton Scott to a musician (especially a sax player) thet throw someone "better" back at me. Looks like it's uncool to like Tom Scott. Well I'm uncool, it figures ;-) Thanks for posting this. Fantastic music!
@aihoschema I am a former touring sax player and I'm not afraid.....Tom Scott Rocks! - Always Has!... No he's not Brecker, Sanborn, or Coltrane, but then again he's not Kenny G either.
@cliffbnelson Tom Scott is the real deal. He just chooses to play more "smooth jazz" (probably because it pays). Check out Born Again to hear what he can do; or better yet, see him in person. He puts on a killer show.
Ooh, this is damn tasty!!! Love Tom Scott. I had an old tape of his that had a great slow song on it. Wonder if it has been posted. "Shadows"? Not sure of the title, but it was on the same album as "Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow" the Baretta theme.
I'd like to improv in this style..can anyone give me some pointers on those scales at 1:32? And the other similar 16th note patters? Where can I learn these?
I recommend transcribing. After time, things like this become easy to hear. But if you're having trouble, here's whats going on (I'm talking concert pitch cuz I don't know if you play tenor or alto or what, I'm transcribing on guitar, you can do the transposition) The song is in Eb (mixolydian mainly) and at 2:32 he plays down that scale with a natural 7th passing tone (D) like this Eb-D-Db-C-Bb-Ab-G-Eb. The Bb lands on the down beat. I'll continue in another post.
He continues up chromatically and then head back down the Eb mixolydian scale, landing on the #4 (or b5, depending on how you look at it). Now the whole line so far looks like this (use your ears for the rhythm, here are the notes: Eb-D-Db-C-Bb-Ab-G-Eb-E-F-Db-C-Bb-A. Actually, I'll assume you play tenor and do the transposition. In this case, the song is in F and the line is:F-E-Eb-D-C-Bb-A-F-F#-G-Eb-D-C-B. He uses F mixolydian and uses #4 and natural seven for more "outside" sounds. Also blues.
I was in the audience in Zurich, Switzerland in the mid 80's, the series was called "Jazz-In" for Swiss TV. I was lucky enough to watch rehearsals too. A local musician (this time Francis Colleta on guitar) was allowed to put his dream band together and in 2 days they would put together a set of live music. I got to meet Joe Sample and Alex Acuna, both very friendly, Tom Scott was a real ballbuster to Wolfgang Schmid (b)....thanks so much for posting this - any more of the same show?

Maybe because he had blowing his lungs out for the six minutes.

lovin the sax solo, but it's funny how he messed up the last "A" he played.
DTate16 3 years ago
Oh - and I didn't hear him miss a thing. He hears it, he plays it.
L9C1C5 3 years ago
yeah he's pretty much amazingness. its just that i've seen other videos of him doing this song, and on this one the last note is different.
