Finally, after hearing this song for the first time since when I was little, I am reassured that I am not crazy and making up random songs when I start singing "Pinocchio, Pinocchio!" That's all I could remember.
Oh my god I love this!!! I remember being about 6 years old and my dad giving me an old record player and a box of records, i found this among them..... I drove my parents nuts playing this and zippity day on the other side..... awww brings back so many memories!!!
In my country as well. Or rather, we call it "Astrosmurfen". It always was one of my favorite smurf songs. I'm used to it being out an astronaut smurf wanting to go another planet, but his spaceship didn't work, so the other smurfs pretended to be aliens. But somehow, it suits the Pinocchio story as well.
Who knows, It seemed to work back then, guess it was a way to introduce chidren who liked the smurfs to another but moar older kids story/fairytale.
Most probably was a marketing decision, Its not the first time something has crossed over and certainly wont be the last :)
That said I prefer/like to think your reasoning is true and all toon chars etc live in a world that you can get to via a big tunnel into the hollywood hills :D

Does anyone know why Pinoccio was In Smurfland?
pinoccio is a separate character from story books that are NOTHING to do with smurfs- i dont understand why his character was part of the smurfs?
its like mixing the teletubbies with teenage mutant turtles- they are all separate characters.
