Well, I have posted elsewhere that I feel Deen has a good deal of Perry's style and sound going for him. However, here we have a studio recording and it is very troubling for me to hear. I would have thought that in this setting Deen's voice would have been clear and unstrained. It almost sounds like Bryan Adams singing here because of all of the grain in Deen's voice. I worry that Deen has done damage to himself singing for Journey too much. Hope not.

Actually, Deen had a cold on the day of the session, and it took place early in the day due to scheduling constraints; hence the grit (which I actually like). So, no need to worry.

Having a cold does indeed change everything. I am surprised they didn't reschedule the recording session. Although this was for charity, it was a great opportunity for Deen to show what he could do in a studio setting. Some singers simply do not record well. Every vocal flaw is immediately apparent. Most singers wait until they are well to put down a track like this that will be heard by many people. Here's hoping that Deen will have the chance to record while healthy!
