The mother does NOT hold them like that but even at that size they can cause a pretty serious injury to a puny human. They hold them like that to keep the pointy parts facing away from their bodies and to try to keep them calmer...there is a nerve on the back of the neck in kitties that causes partial paralysis. It does not really hurt them but it would not be a good thing to do all of the time...they are really too big for that at this size.
@llSTEBOll ..u serious?? "puma" is just another name for mountain lion or cougar.. who the hell told you pumas were mythological creatures?! ..u dumb son of a bitch go surf some wikipedia or something lol
pumas and all animals should be left to themselves. Humans keep them in cage so they can see them all the time in the zoo. But do you know that you are actually going against their natural livelihood by putting them in the zoo. They are not meant to be kept in the zoo for everyone to see. They are to be freed. Imagine putting yourself in the house all your life with food given to you on every meal. Will you be happy?
I love how everyone thinks that they should have their feet supported, and that the zoologist don't know what they are doing. Do you think their real mother would support their feet as she carried them?? Not at all...
I think they hold the cubs like that so that the pumas don't use their claws on their feet to shred the zoo keeper's hands. Nonetheless, the pumas are still adorable!
I think the zoo keepers should at least support the cubs legs with their hand =='.. i understand its natural but still .. they look kinda like their on a washing line.. and after all the flashing from the photographers.. they seem uncomfortable..
@tubby92288 that doesn't hurt them, it actually makes them feel good. mother pumas carry them like this all the time, or by their heads. it releases endorphins and is completely painless, they have excess skin there
Of course it'll hurt them if you hold them wrong. But these people work with animals and know what they are doing. They know how to grab them by the neck the wright way. They grab them on their scruffs, which they should know, releases endorphins. Endorphins produce a sense of well-being and a decrease in pain.
but...that doesn't make it easier to watch them hold them liek that XD sure they could have probably just took shots of them in the place they are kept or maybe put on leashes if they wanted to take the cats out XD
@xXGaticaXx Baby cats and dogs of all sorts have all developed tough neck skin, but older cats an dogs dont like to be held like that because its "treating them like babies".
@narathh Not true - they don't like to be held like that because their body weight is too much to be held on the skin of their neck. This can cause muscles to tear around their eyes, mouths and cheeks.
@gmt903 And you don't see the zoo keeper supporting his bottom with his other hand? Geez, if you're such an expert at handling large felines, why don't you go do it instead of bitching on youtube about it?

@llSTEBOll No, that's elk. Elk are mythological creatures. Especially the trophy bulls. They're fabricated, just like the jackalope. ;)

@nasdaq900 Wrong. Most (reputable) zoos are not keeping animals for entertainment only but to preserve endangered species. Read Gerald Durrell!

@xXGaticaXx True -- but the mother stops carrying them this way once they are that big. They should at least be supporting their bottoms.

OfTheImp 7 months ago
@OfTheImp only one keeper is supporting the cub under the bottom - no keeper or vet tech would hold cubs of that age in that way these days.

Yeah they're cute but it actually hurts when they hold 'em in the neck for such a long time.
And don't say that the mother do so, cause it doesn't hold the cub for 5 minutes like that.
