wouldn't this be just another form of advertising? I quite agree with jilux on the question. A business needs to form good relationships with different kinds of customers and personally meeting with your clients does help a lot. Since it's the internet, won't there be risks involved? If so, how do or will you resolve it?
it's advertising, yes. it's part of the e-commerce business process i think primarily, your target would be your own contacts from your social network group. after all, most of your contacts in these social network groups are people that you know of. from there, you build on your customer base when your contacts tell their contacts about your product and so on (like an n-degree network). for JM, his website is his source of revenue.
The Internet has a wide range of sellers having the same product, which makes it difficult for some potential customers to find your site. How do you establish, then, your "own" customers? Does these customers revolve only on your social network contacts or does it go beyond that?
In this case JM is using the social networking site multiply so his customers would be mainly his contacts, but through the quality of his products this improves for example a customer buys one of the offered gadgets in JM's site and he is satisfied with its quality for its price. in the workplace an acquaintance sees the customers new gadget and inquires about it. This process captures more potential buyers creating a satisfactory customer pool for JM.
