  • 2:50 you have it :)

  • very interesting video thanks

  • now i have to find jon14d's comment

  • what type of pencil did u used for the outline?

  • u good!!!

  • what pencil type are you using?

  • espectacular....felicitaciones....los que no le gustan tus videos son simplemente envidiosos!!sigue adelante

  • wooow fantastico

  • dude you fucked up the cheeks

  • u have done a big mistake on the cheeks..... Her cheeks r open...& u have made them in ward tooo much...O-o

  • Oooooh

So, that's how shadows are used to create a 3D feeling ... oooh !!

I've been more than 25 years drawing and nobody told me, never, what i saw on 7:02 minutes on this great video.

In my free time I'll practice this stuff.. is worth it.

  • she have i big nose

  • good job. you show the way most artists jump around on the face, there isn't a precise order when sharpening and shading. nice.

  • @BEAUTIFULBROWNSKIN Yeah... I do that too... But now I've seen a girl draw by sections and I'm tempted to try it. Her portraits get a more 'plastic' look. It's not a bad thing, for sure. I don't know how to say it, is like a perfected and polished version of the people she's portraying... I tend to draw even the slightest details, but I wanna try this, the blemish-free version as I call it hahahaa

  • 5/5

    Great Details

    Fantasic Drawing.

  • GOOD!

  • meu vc desenha muito velho mais do que eu

  • woow nice

  • lets stop drawing and lets go to a mental hospital and lets try to not sound like a pervert anymore

  • nice..:) i wish you have a step by step tutorial for beginners like me..

  • What kind of pencils do you use?

  • youtube.com/watch?v=UtFOfQX4QpA

  • i wish i can draw this good but im 14 and cant pay for lessons and dont have the time to draw

  • @jon14d

14 and don't have the time to draw? how's that :D

  • @timen1986 I'm running around allot i us to draw pretty well when i was in the 4th grade and i was trying to draw about a month ago and i could not draw as well and i just want to have fun with this but i think i im just picky

  • @jon14d if you squeeze in a few hours each week, when you are thirty you will not say, I wish I had learned to draw.

  • @jon14d you dont need to pay for lessons to draw and wow 14 and you don't have time? When I was 14 I drew during lunchtime, study hall, on the bus, after class, during class. I doodled alot and took as many art classes as I could. If you want to draw, push yourself.

  • @kitsunechan90 thanks for the comment i will i have an in tire summer to do so

  • @jon14d No problem, work hard and explore art to it's fullest! =D

  • So is it harder to draw someone who doesn't have a fair complexion? Would that make the shadowing more difficult?

  • i gotta get a picture:P

  • i love u!!

  • soooooooooooooooo bad

  • @JuGunYong

Actually in strong direct lighting there is a lot of contrast, and harder edges and less halftones, you would know that if you knew how to draw. How much gradation there is is determined by how slowly or abruptly the form turns from the light, and the type of lighting. Also, he whipped this drawing together very fast, and wasn't going for a exact likeness.... noobs.

  • I had a subscription to this guys site; it is definitely worth it if your looking to improve. He is a pro.

  • i can do this with my eyes closed ,

with my hands tide behind my back ,wile grocery shopping doing a handstand wile on a date

  • her eyes should be a little chincier

  • Comment removed

  • @kterbo Ok I found the first after some searching but these do not come up in order... now can't find middle section...can you label them please? Very helpful

  • my drawing never work with colour

  • lovely, how come you don't worry about your hand touching the paper? is it a personal choice or are you not leaning on it? i tend to snudge everything

  • Magic.

  • quiet to hear pencil

  • talented

  • hmm the nose is diferent...

  • Nice...

  • woooow !

  • no pela,

  • woo identica :)

  • what type of pencils do you use?

  • @PeacefulParadox i would guess 4B

  • no one draws negroes

  • @MrMrMoto

you would have to shade the whole face, always resharp your pencil, pencil wears down faster... ect ect... so people are basicly too lazy and too cheap to draw them... ;P

  • Comment removed

  • cool

  • @JuGunYong lmao hes using a style where you use only 1 shade, he used only 1 pencil idk what height but only one pencil for the drawing...

  • @asandman94 he only ever really uses one pencil and uses pressure to set the grayscale

  • @djcobolt lmao hes using ONE pencil, and is using pressure for different scale shades...just because a realistic drawing has to have blended in shades, doesn't mean every drawing has to, did you know the intentions of his drawing in mind?

  • bravo

  • great vid

  • What kind of the pencil do you use? thanx ;)

  • @konradas1 He uses a Prismacolor Col-Erase Black

  • watching" Portrait pencil drawing test "LimbimHomey.

  • what ?wow how did he do that i wish i could draw like that!

  • T-T u didnt do her face justice... bad artist. bad.

  • It's funny being tought how to copy something. :)

  • You should make a video on how to avoid mistakes and overworking :)

  • @IncidentalShine he already did... you just watched it;)

  • @IncidentalShine ... you don't get it do you

  • @IncidentalShine overworking is a confusing term since all "overworking" is basically just hitting a wall where you keep working on something without knowing what you do because you don't know how to carry on. Which means that you need to study more so you understand what the next step would be.

  • @ConnyPaints I've been taught in a traditional and contemporary approach so its not the skills aspect of it for me, A lot of drawing is not as systematic as this. Overworking is a term which Therry Rudin from Bauhaus endorses, yes it may not be straightforward but I've definitely done it myself, seen others do it and have discussed this issue with peers. Overworking is where you step back from a drawing and realise you've gone too far and overcooked it, the solution is to look more.

  • @IncidentalShine That's completely different. He stops so he won't "overwork it". You don't overwork anything if you realize what steps you take. Drawing or painting mindlessly and ending up with junk is just thoughtless and nothing else, because you don't take the time to observe your steps. Besides, how can it even be close to overworked when there's only structure and shadow shapes in the drawing?

  • @IncidentalShine Let me explain why you see that as overworking. You sit close to the paper making small small details all over the place and try to work at it as much as you can to make it "better" but you're just adding things that doesn't help the picture because you don't know what you're doing. So overworking is like I said just something you do cause you don't have any knowledge backing up the things you do so the "detail" is equal to nothing and you're just destroying the picture.

  • @ConnyPaints I over came that issue a long time ago it still doesn't ensure that overworking does not occur. My practice does not involve small details, at all I am applying for a masters in drawing how can you say I don't have knowledge or I don't know what I'm doing, Do you usually work with CAD?

  • @ConnyPaints I enjoy discussing art but I do not sit close to the paper, I do not make small small details, all over the place, it is not appropriate to consider work as better or worse within critical or technical analysis, I don't just add things as I go b/c of my research, I do know what I am doing, Over working is something some artists will do because of their process not because of their lack of education. Again I don't do things that are driven by detail, I do not destroy my pictures.

  • @IncidentalShine Wow get off your high horse. I don't care what school you go to or what diplomas or whatever. You take my argument completely out of context and I feel like this discussion won't go anywhere since all you'll give me is your "I went to this school and I'm this master of art" or whatever. I don't care if you went to the best school for art in the world. It doesn't have anything to do with this and I wish not to continiue discussing this with you since you simply won't listen.

  • @ConnyPaints actually, I change my mind. I will explain what I mean, but by PM cause discussing things in comments are ridiculous.

  • @ConnyPaints Perhaps you shouldn't answer a comment that was not directed to you with telling some one they should study, when that is not an issue for them nothing should have given you that idea that I am in need of education, utterly inappropriate of you to be making assumptions of others shame on you.

  • @ConnyPaints I can't believe I forgot to make this clear looking at my original comment from over a year ago I did post that because I teach drawing in schools and arts and health settings. May I advise for you classes in appropriate critique if you intend on continuing to be an arbitrator for drawing practices without seeing someones drawings.

  • favourite!

  • motherfuckers

  • is that Bjork?

  • Oh dear Jesus I'm horrible at drawing ......

  • he is brilliant, sooo much better than me but i don't like his shading because it looks a bit unrealistic.

    But that is brilliant mate

  • @SilentBaseGt

This is a sketch my dear not a finished portrait.

Just the beginning map of sorts.

If he wanted to take this to a finished portrait he would use this to map out his lights and darks then add the pertinent details later in the process.

He's not going for photo-realism at this point.

But all portraits and paintings have to start with a good foundation, whether they are p-r or not.

  • Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!!!!

  • thats bjork right?

  • This is awesome! I took an interest in drawing portraits about a month ago and I have so much to learn. I hope I can be half as good as you are one day. Thanks for sharing your videos. :)

  • You are so good I just my EAT YOUR FACE OFF!

  • finally a youtube drawing teacher who can actually draw well....

  • nice!

  • Wow! You got the real image just like the picture. Wish I can draw like that... There are three videos that work best for this they are:

Secret Drawing Technique Revealed: Perfect Proportion Every Time.

Drawing Secrets Revealed: How To Draw Proportion

How To Draw The Nose and Features

  • what cind of pen is it?

  • lol yea i was going to comment about that eye but you got it :)

  • Muy buenooo!!!!!!! jajajaja

  • la quijada de el dibujo que realisas esta muy gorda a la de la verdadera

  • what pencils are you using?

  • هعكسامكم س

  • I think I'm gonna learn a lot from your tutorial. You're awesome man. :)

  • Nice^^

  • how find those nice pictures to draw?

  • @lucasjensen1 its probably his relatives

btw if its not where does he find them?

  • visiten mi perfil no tengo videos pero ahi esta el link para ver mi galeria! saludos!

  • خطيرررر هع

  • A drawing is never finished...Theres always gonna be a portion of the drawing to be improveed and fixed..SOO A DRAWING IS NEVER FINISHED

  • the features are too big for the head in your drawing compared to the pic. nice try though.

  • @gonymets i feel like you should be making tutorials since you seem to know how to do this better.

  • I don't understand why he didn't add the little shadow above her lips... It's clearly in the photo, and it looks weird without it...

  • Tell please, which pencil in a hand at the artist. HB or any another? How the pencil is called?

  • i never understood the point of drawing a picture, it doesn't matter how well you draw, but how well you transcribe, shrug

  • I like my ability to transcribe. I do it pretty good. ^_^"

But, I'm trying to learn how to actually draw... which is much harder. >_>"

But, I think usually when a person does drawings like this one, it's supposed to show something not actually there. Like, the type of lines you use or how dark it is, or anything, it gives it a different feel.

  • @AsjJohnson127 idk ive drawn people but not from pictures they were actually standing in front of me

  • why doesn't the "reply" link under exaurius actually put the reply under them? >_>"

  • crazy!

  • Wow ! you are amazing, great tip, video and explanation !!

I wish i could draw like you !

  • I think he uses graphic pencils

  • where do you buy that pencil

  • Any soft lead pencil from an art supply store will work.. try a 4B graphite pencil. You want a soft pencil that lends itself to easy shading on a textured paper.

  • @nadine1loves1to1sing I just bought a few dozen on

    montgomerypens google it

  • @nadine1loves1to1sing rwtr;l;s//d

  • @nadine1loves1to1sing in shop ;p

  • @nadine1loves1to1sing

Looks like a black prisma colored pencil, can buy at most art supply store/craft store.

  • @nadine1loves1to1sing im pretty sure it is a Prismacolor black colored pencil believe it or not I think I have heard this mentioned in one of his videos, hope this helps.

  • very goodddddddddd

  • Ive seen a few drawings by this guy on youtube...He is mostly very good and gives great tips,,but i gotta agree, its not a very good likeness at all.

  • why dont you put some videos up? i mean if you can say sometin' like that you gotta be able to back it up right? well then i'm waitin to see a vid of you drawing

  • good job however you should try to make the values more intense because it will make it look much more realistic. Also, a good deal of the shadowes on the face have smoother transitions to the lighter parts than you have on your drawing. Try not to use so many dark lines to seperate for instance the edge of the face from the hair... use instead value difference.

  • I'm not impressed! the face has the wrong shape, oh, my god..I don't know where to start..sorry, no good..

  • He`s got too much space between the nose and the mouth. That`s the only minor detail that he did wrong. The rest is great. Good job.

  • o.o...love..0.0

  • thanks for no music,,,,cool.

  • @FIRECRACKER392 naah=(

  • @FIRECRACKER392 thank you for no music and no fast motion

  • wow. Old = unflattering. I'm only 27 and I'm insulted. LOL

  • nice :)

  • amazing, i wish i can draw like that.

  • It's just practice, also you have to love what you are doing.

  • two totally different persons...

  • He's only about 15% finished sport.

  • the portrait is too fat XD

  • OMG

  • :DDD COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • to much shading on the left side i would say, and her neck is very strangely proportioned. Its good though

  • شكرا لك

    سعودي

  • This guy still needs to work on some of his skills, just look at the dark outlines he uses in most of his drawings, that's the first mistake beginners make...sigh

  • Agree, and when I saw the photo I really thought "I can do better than him"

  • thanks i learned a lot from this VID. thanks a LOT

  • Great work. I like the detail of your instruction. For myself, at the very least, it would have been helpful (if possible) if you could perhaps split the screen and show more of the photo along with your progress so the viewer can make a visual connection between what you're doing and what's in the photo.

  • Nice.

  • There is a mistake but overall this is still an excellent drawing :D

  • woooooow

  • would be nice to show us from the beginning . . .

  • awsome sorry, i just had to sub to this 5/5 dude keep it up..

  • what pencil are you using

  • no matter wat mistake u make dude ur a phenominal artist

  • Thanks Matt, very informative video and some useful tips. I think you could have achieved better likeness if you added the indentation in her philtrum but very good likeness overall

  • really it takes me 15 minutes to make a complete portrait. Does that mean I don't concentrate or someting?

  • What ? I time is no matter !! I need between 20 and 30 minutes and even longer for bigger

projects ! Sometimes days odr week - if it´s a painture. ^^ So we eighter have the same problem or it´s just normal ;-).

  • interesting outcome and style. thanks for the video!

  • you're drawings are amazing, I've always loved art!

  • It is a privilege to be taught a few minutes for free by a professional teacher and illustrator from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan New York. I'm really impressed that you can find for free a few minutes of tutoring by Mr. Archambault itself online. Thank you for posting.
