You indicate that the American Standard is a much better guitar than your MIM. I don't think so, especially if you have put Tex-Mex pups on it. As long as the guitar plays well, holds a tune and the intonation is right, it's as good as any other Strat.
Are you using the standard wiring with the wide open bridge or the Jimmie Vaughan style wiring with the tone control moved to the bridge and wide open middle?
Are you using the standard wiring with the wide open bridge or the Jimmie Vaughan style wiring with the tone control moved to the bridge and wide open middle?
Tex Mex are 1950's to 1970s style pickups employing alnico magnet slugs (the 6 little pole pieces) instead of having a magnet BAR running across the bottom of the pickup-up. Turn the Tex-Mex pickup over, you see NO magnet attached to the bottom of the pole pieces because the pole pieces in the Tex Mex pickups ARE the magnets, whereas in the more recent model strat pickups, there's either one or two magnet pairs on bottom. The Tex-Mex style pickup is VERY BRIGHT.Modern Strat pickups are fatter.
I have had a MIM for about 15 years. It still sounds just as good as the day I brought it home. I told the guy I wanted the cheapest strat they had. I played a Squire, Mexican and an American Standard. The Squire was absolute GARBAGE! The american standard was expensive and very well made. I played the $300 TEX MEX strat and that was the end of it, I bought it. Mine has a humbucker bridge pickup. I like the sound a little more and haven't seen one like that since.

I just bought the same colored Mexi Strat at a pawn shop for $160. Just got a set of brand new Tex Mex pups on line for $60. $220 total, and a set of strings! Nice playin' kid, keep bringin' it.
I have a MIM and a MIA standard strat. My Mexican standard is my main guitar and I love it. The only real differences are the strap buttons and the bridge. The pickups sound just fine on mine. I've owned many guitars and my Mexican standard is the one guitar I would never part with.
I went to the Mexican fender Factory and guess what? the workers are mexican guitar players, so don't worry the guitar sounds 99.9% same as the American.
For those of you who want to know about Tex-Mex pickups, ..they are bright and glassy, slightly thinner than other strat pickups in the midrange but have a nice bright glassy sound with lots of upper harmonics...they do not sound flat like cheaper PU's
i have cheap and expensive Guitars, and the Story, that an expensive , or old guitars sounds better, is a tale... your guitar sounds very well !!!! :) I have Mex- and USA -strats, the mex-strats are very, very good guitars... :)
I've got the Tex-Mex Pickups in my American Standard Strat HSS, (they came standard on the HSS model) and I can honestly say I'm in love with them, but for some reason, I see that there are other guitarists who really don't like them. To Me they are absolutely perfect and much more affordable.
@idog6204 hahaha thnx! you didn't see other side of the room - it looks more like 80's. I have 90's PC, 90's TV, 80's hi-fi stuff and some other things ;) I have no money to change that but I feel comfortable in that room :)
i've been looking at getting a set of tex mex pups for about a month now for a guitar that i'm building, and dude, fucking sold, these sound amazing, especially for the price, thanks :)
Hey I was wondering if you had ever tried the texas specials p'ups? If so what did you think, and how did they compare to the tex-mex's? Thinking of getting new p'ups and cant decide between the two.
I just obtained a VG Stratocaster and it plays like a dream. If you should happen to have some money I highly suggest this guitar. Plays just like an American Strat (which it is) and so much more.
Sounds good, but if you're gonna name your strat, you gotta get an american made. It really does make a huge difference. the mexi gets the job done, but when I bought my american standard i could feel and hear the difference.
The mexican standard strat is as good a strat as any out there. You could play to 150,000 people with this guitar at a festival. Its not the guitar but the player.
Sounds like my Jimmie Vaughan strat. Sick and tired of mine.. I hate the tex-mex pickups at times. If you want to play Hendrix to Mayer.. You can get there a little with these, but you won't get the nice glassy bell like tone with these. You would need lots of compression. Buying a new strat and then I am changing the pickups in my JV.
Hey Guys, Please Help me decide on Maple Fretboard or Rosewood Fretboard......Im going for a Made In Mexico Fender Standard Strat, I would be playing lead guitar as well as rythmn......I play All kind of music, Country, Blues, Rock and Metal, I have a guitar for metal though its an ESP ex 260 with Rose Wood Fretboard, Please Help!!!!!!!!!
remember, music is coming out of the hands, not the instrument. Give b.b. king, clapton, or anybody of that caliber a 50 dollar strat knockoff and guess what? that thing will still sound like heaven! keep up the good playing!
Cool. These pickups were meant to tear it up on the fender hot rod series amps :). Thanks for vid, thinking bout getting a pair of these pickups, specially after playing the 50's road worn series strat
I decided to go with the Texas specials. They were a bit better especially on the clean end and had less hum + sweet sexy bell tone. I still want to get a strat with the tex-mex pickups though, the grit on them is simply irresistible :). But Samarium Cobalt Noiseless (SCN) pickups are the way to go especially if the "hum" gets on your nerves. Also, understand these pickups will define the style your guitar will play :), the SCN's are more versatile and bit more friendly with pedals.
I hear ya. The only drawback to the stock mexican strats is the tone controls do not work. The knobs themselves function correctly, but the stock pickups in the mexi-strat are incapable of tone adjustments.

guitar is stock, will i nees to change pick ups, do some anti-noise works ? give an advice, if you have time pls :)

No... I changed pickups for stock few weeks ago and it sounds good with that body (poplar). TexMex are great but too hot for me.
If you think about expensive pickups like Noiseless... I don't like a sound of these in Mex Strat (I tried those pickups).

TalkerWalker 2 years ago
Great.
What do you think of the bridge pick-up sound ie with the toggle switch right down?
It piercing, but you get good harmonics. Some find it to thin and prefer the bigger sounds for the other picks -ups. Rory G. alternates between them.

Bridge pickup sounds great and little like telecaster. My favourite position in Tex Mex set but know I have stock pickups again :)
