  • bet they thought they were terrorists

  • i think for some pilots this low altitude fly over would be better than Orgasm

  • @mastouris69 affirm!

  • must have been real nerve racking to see a plane flyover at such low distance ............... was awesome in the movie.saw the movie first nd didnt believe it at first. but man, those people there must have shit their pants on seeing it

  • I remember this so well. I was 11 years old and we couldn't believe it when this Boeing appeared out of nowhere flying incredibly low!

  • when this happened, i was about 10, but i remember my dad going on about this, saying the whole time "het jy gesien hoe fokken laag daai plein was" lol...i think by that time my dad had a couple of lion lagers in him already....wow...remember lion lager...damn, back in the day (o_0)

  • awesome. but you just know if something went wrong and it crashed everyone would say it was a stupid idea. What were they thinking etc.

  • @Kevtb87 Captain Kay (commander) was a guest speaker at a number of our flying school's wings parades. They practiced this in the sim at (OR Tambo) for hours. Captain Kay was ex-RAF, so these guys are professionals. The chances of something going wrong was almost zero and they had a number of alternatives & emergency procedures. If not, CAA would not have cleared them for this. This started a entire formation flying culture at SAA. See SAA Formation Flying.

  • I wonder if the organiser did know about it, fair enough in the movie it made a bit more tension however i dont think it was spare of the moment in the movie, but wonder if security actually got a scare or not in real life?

  • @jameshigz Pre september you know what maybe security was a little less up-tight?

  • The actual match was like something out of a movie.

  • 2 people work for Airbus

  • PARTYIN' PARTYIN' PARTYIN' YEAH

  • osama bin laden was in the audience and got an idea for something similar .lol

  • "Invictus" was my favorite movie of 2009, and this was my favorite moment in it--I haven't had such a thrill since the bikes got airborne in "E.T.!" (P.S. Read "Playing the Enemy" to learn how meticulously the pilot prepared for this .)

  • LOL So i guess alot of us had to check if this was real after watching the movie, Im watching it on sky now and just had to check fucking Awesome!! It was in the air and meant to be for South Africa!! And im a Kiwi Yay!!!

  • que genial...es igual a la pelicula.... / great movie...

  • i just watched invictus and i thought it was just great and i tried to see if the plane was actualy true or just hollywood added and tanx for the video cuz now i know it was true :)))))))) i love Mandela .... From a french canadien ;)

  • was that a UFO I saw speeding across at the start of the clip?

  • OOh crap Americans and their Bullshit..I didnt go watch that movie. I saw the real deal and thats enough for me. Western movies come up with all kinds of wack shit that everybody gets excited about... they must just jump.

This vid is awsome that time was an incredible one in our country,

Do you all remeber 2007 in France..Eish

Proud South African moment right here :-)

  • Just watch movie! I cant believe about this. Now, I do.

  • Kind of amazing it was allowed in the first place. Hindsight is 20/20 after 9/11. But really, what if something had just gone wrong with the plane? That's a pretty bold permit application! Maybe the authorities didn't know just how low the plane would be or just how big one of them is?

Anyways, cool video. I'd have loved to have been there.

  • lol

i just watched the movie and i was all

    "thats fuckin bullshit"

    then i saw this.

    :O

  • i just saw the movie and i was wondering if the plane really flew by.

  • I actually watched all of this happen, live, on tv when I was 15. At the time I didn't realise the significance of this match I was just enjoying the occasion. I remember Nelson turning up in the Sprinbok kit, I remember "HEY, JONAH!" I remember Gareth Edwards talking in the pre match build up and the jet flying over and drowning out his voice, I remember Joost Van De Westheausan leaping into the air at the final whistle, I remember the players kneeling in a circle after the game 15 yrs ago.

  • Can you imagine this happening these days, especially in the US? People in the crowds would be panicked...running for their lives!

  • omg i fuck it up is like 9 11 9 11 9 11 9 11..... and i dont kill anybody now im cool lol

  • Go bokkie!!!

  • This is real - I was 15 when I watched the game and I very clearly remember the flyover. Not great rugby, but the most beautiful match ever played.

  • I've seen the All Blacks Haka with my own eyes and it really impresses, but seeing a B747 doing that Fly over is stunning!!! I reckon it was a great move from SA to fade out the Haka effect.

I also checked youtube after watching Clint Eastwood 's movie "Invictus" to make sure that it wasn't a Hollywood scene. Good Job mates!

  • 4:th biggest event?... So I guess World Cup final in football and the Super Bowl are two of the biggest. What is the last then? Unless you count the whole olympics as one..

  • @tsalbeci well you got : wimbledon, le tour de france, the rugby world cup, the fifa world cup and the summer olympics. These events are seen as the top 5 biggest sporting events on our planet, with the Fifa World Cup being seen as the biggest. There are others like the winter olympics and the British and US opens (golf). As for the Superbowl. Dude, no one plays, watches or understands this sport outside the US for it to even be considered a worldwide event.

  • @dazza2151 I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the superbowl. Although it has a limited following outside the US it still has an audience. You have also forgotten the the Monaco Grand Prix, the cricket world cup, the NBA , the world series and big boxing events. However, there is no doubt that Soccer has the three largest sporting events in the world cup final, champions league final and the European championship final in viewing figures and revenue.

  • @hollowman742 Sure the superbowl is big, i'm not denying that i'm simply referring to the biggest sporting events and although superbowl is watched to a certain degree (i watched the last one with the saints) by other people other than americas, its not a WORLDWIDE event such as the fifa world cup, which is what i'm trying to get at. As for the others i agree and disagree with some (world series c'mon, should be called the america series.). But thats a whole other argument.

  • @hollowman742 dont forget the Daytona 500 which usually has 200,000 plus spectators at the track, and at least 30+ million (meh give or take) people watching it on tv, FOX probably makes more money on the D500 than it does through at least half + more of the world series.

  • @tsalbeci it's sporting events not matches. This was in 1995 but the list has changed since then 1995: Olympics Football WOrld Cup Commonwealth Games Rugby World Cup 2010: Football World Cup Olympics Rugby World Cup 109038459384: super bowl. Accept the fact no one else in the world cares.
  • WOW!

  • This footage of the plane flying over the stadium is real, it is different to that in the movie (to correct comment "Here's a video of the incident, but I suspect it is taken from the film "Invictus". Im watching the movie now and played the flyover 3 times to check the angles and it is completely different in the film... now I must look for the video where someone said it happened in Australia in 2005...now back to the film.

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome flick. Clint Eastwood as director nailed this one. I wonder if there were passengers on that plane during the fly over? If there was I wonder what their reaction was?

  • I am a little surprised - so many people don;t seem to have remembered this - did none of you watch the game?

  • @BroodofLoki well I was only 11 at the time so no, I didn't watch the game!

  • Same as everyone else, watched the film and couldn't remember it happening!

    Great film!

  • 40,000 dollars, US!!!

  • Great movie and best of all NO VUVUZELAS during the games!

  • Ha! So many of us (including myself) just saw the movie and was like "what!? no way that really happened!" and now we're here watching this videos confirming it.

    Awesome.

  • @IzaaqMicro lol I thought I was not the only one doing it because of the movie

  • i dont know if they used actual footage or not but invictus was pretty accurate nevertheless (cept the whole I-might-crash-into-the-stadium-face)

  • I am watching the movie and google "airplane over rugby stadium world cup final" and here I am.

  • haha invictus really made more of this than it really was, i saw it today with a few of my friends and they all thought the 747 was going to crash into the stadium xD

  • so awesome, just saw this movie and it was great! thanks for sharing the actual replay of the real thing!

  • Unbelievable

  • That was awesome.

  • I know the producer of the film -- the film took a little poetic lic--Thats Hollywood. But it did happen. You could not do it today. Go Robbie Lorenze! Cant wait to see your next film!!!!

  • that's close **

  • damn that close.!

  • =__wkBOzYlgM&feature=related flyover budapest

  • Dat hoef je tegenwoordig niet meer te proberen

  • This is fucking cool.

  • @dickkwikkwek Hey pal!! Watch your FUCKING language!!

  • @jorgekluney I'm sorry :O please don't hit me

  • Thank you for posting this, i've been looking for it everywhere! This has been done many times since, including here in Australia before a socceroo match in 2005, however they don't have the impact like this one in South Africa, from memory it was the first time a commercial airliner was used for a flyover. If you find more video of it please post it.

  • WOW!! I went to see the movie on Friday and I cant remember this happening in real life so had to double check on here!!

They would never get clearence for this nowadays!

    Great film BTW!!

  • Thanks for the comment. I agree, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Take care

  • @cmaclean100 Man thanks for answering my question, there was a plane indeed as in the movie! Oh and the movie was a state of the art by all means! I love it and really touched my heart.

  • @cmaclean100

i saw the movie and was impressed how that did great casting for it. actually made me tear up. great inspirational for sure

  • @plasticworlds likewise when I watched it. Nails....

  • @cmaclean100 i read somewhere that they were trying to get one approved for the 2010 wc, either way that pilot has balls

  • @GREABO06 i saw the movie too in the cinema. i was almost shitting my pants when plane flew over the stadium, what a sound lol haha. it was almost like the plane was crashin' the cinema room :p i tought it was just some self made up scene, but the flyover did happen! damn, good pilot!

  • @GREABO06

    mee too

  • @GREABO06 lol, i'm here doing the same thing.... had to see if it were true or not

  • @GREABO06 they didnt get clearence the piolets planned it all

  • @GREABO06 Actually SAA FLY OVERS have become an institution for major events in SA. SAA are known for their fly overs & flying formations until today still do such during national events like Presidential Inaugurations, during the last Presidential Inauguration SAA did a formation fly over using Airbus A340's. SAA Fly Overs and Formations are flown by ex-SAAF (South African Air Force) Pilots who are current SAA Pilots.

It is a also a tradition in SA to raise a glass and drink during a flyover.

  • if it was done in the USA it would've been like $4million dollars most of which will go to insurance in the case the plane goes down.

  • another 200 million to cover the heart attacks.

  • reply to lyrical wax btw

  • Just saw the movie tonight... read on the net (in an urban legend forum) that is was not real. HaHa!!! Right On!!!!

    Great movie BTW

  • Give the post Sept 11th world, I like to see this get approved now. You'd have mass panic.

  • didn't the pilot crash the 747 4 times in a simulator before getting it right? that's what i heard anyway!

  • @SpagmanAus stupid fuck

  • what? fuck off you wanker, that's the story behind it. the pilot trained on a simulator to fly that low (as if you have half a brain cell you'd know they normally dont!!) and apparantly a few times before getting it right, the simulation failed. so get ya fucken facts right you abusive retard.

  • Just saw invictus 10 mins ago and this is epic

  • Approval or not. That was sooo very dangerous.

Just saw the movie and loved it.

  • but in the film the pilot says something like "its in my hands now" and he has an evil look on his face?

  • Hi there, I know he does. I think it was just creative license used in the film script to add some tension to the plot. The plane was in Captain Laurie Kay;'s hands all the time. Thanks for commenting

  • no, he says i am responsable for anything that happens from this point on and has a smirk no his face. You are meant to believe it is an evil smirk as he is going to kill mandela, actually it's a tongue-in-cheek smirk, we just aren't meant to know it yet. The security would have known at the actual event tho

  • @LyricalWax

Yes, they always show the body guard looking so nervous so it sort of makes you think he is going to do something evil.

  • Sorry I meant to type not occured, as you will have picked up by the rest of the sentence. Hence it did not make sense. My error. No need to do the math. Just a need to check my cooment. Way to go!

  • This moment is shown in the new movie "Invictus". The only problem is that in the movie Nelson Mandela's security think it is a terrorist attack and the pilot give the impression it was done by the flight crew on the spur of the moment.

  • Thanks for the comment. You are absolutely right about the story line in the movie. I would just call it creative license to help give the movie more suspense and appeal. Evryone on Mr Mandela's security team knew it was happening as it had been pre-approved. In addition, 911 had occured at that stage so there was really no precedent that would have led them to suspect that the flyover was a terrorist attack of some sort or an attempt on Mr Mandela's life. Thanks again for the comment.

  • @cmaclean100 I think you meant "911 hadn't occurred......"

  • Amazing! Thanks for posting this, do u have more of the fly over??

  • I do however I will need to look for it. If I find it I will post it and email you.

    Thanks

  • Amazing- thanks for posting this !!
