@MadMickeyTV - For sure, it is. The showgirls, chorus girls and especially soubrettes (featured dancers) all wore skimpy outfits; many would not be out of place in today's music videos. In some clubs, the girls were darn near topless.
@mansfieldification - well, actually there are some dancers almost as good, or even as good. There are a lot of dancers who do this style pretty well, especially in Los Angeles. Check out the Camp Hollywood vids on youtube. Thanks for commenting, and stopping by all the same. Peace. :)
@personacualquiera For the first time in recorded human history (since ancient Sparta, where female athletes wore toga length gym skirts), in 1920s (from women's rejecting pre-WW1 prudery and longskirt restrictions on movement) women's skirt hems rose to the knee. Too after 1941 -- due to WW2 rationing of cloth, most young US men's being abroad at war, and women at home running the USA. In 1947 "The New Look" reverted to the 1930s midi-skirt, mid-calf length, which reappeared in the late 1970s.
And I thought I'd seen everything then I find this. I recognize Lenny Smith, Jean Veloz, Irene Thomas but don't know the others. I do recognize the Groovy Movie routine not only because I've seen in a million times since starting dancing, but because of the impact it made when I first saw it in '99 and started by long love affair with what was then called "Hollywood Style" Very cool.
@MICKEYSMONKEY In 1940s films (like Swing dance scene in Hellzapoppin), apparently mini- and microskirts were OK on lower-echelon classes as waitresses and maids. The revealed leg (& pantaloon-ettes) revealed their lowerclass availability. Only c. 1964 fwd. was the miniskirt embraced by middle- and upperclass women.
to davenotsocool - Can't tell you exactly but "Jingle Bell Rock" (original version) was written in the 20s; I've seen the sheet music - I was born in 1944 & hearing it in the late 50s, thought it was current but I would pop off about hearing a new song - my parents, elderly neighbors, band director - someone would inform me an original version was done back in upmteem? and they were always right;concluded only original music written was by the Masters;everyone else stole! Called it a "cover."
Superb dancing, complicated but lots of soul and fun!

From whom or where did the mythical idea of white people not knowing how to dance ever come from?!?
Khultan 9 months ago
that looks more like a cosplay costume then something someone wore in the 40's

@MadMickeyTV 'Cosplay'. You're using a term that doesn't go with this era.

Rock and roll was first heard on a record in 1916 on "The Camp Meeting Jubilee" on the Little Wonder label, record number 339, the lyrics are:
We've been rockin' an' rolling in your arms, Rockin' and rolling in your arms, Rockin' and rolling in your arms, In the arms of Moses.
