I had a debt agency tell me I owed them cash from my ex-cable company. I had proof otherwise.
Companies earn money by selling debt to agencies so there is every incentive not to thoroughly error check whether it has been cleared at the date of outsourcing.
Given that he had enough money to innate legal action and the amount owed was small, I 'd wager he did in fact pay.
