Their neighbours who have ditched their monarchies Cambodia, Vietnam, Burma, Loas have all suffered greatly as a result. This is a very difficult situation for the Thai people. Any pretense of democracy in Thailand is basically a lie. Thailand has very ancient traditions, including the belief in a largely benelovent leadership, represented by the monarchy. On the other hand, Thaksin embraced many western values, with the promise of improvement for the rural poor + speaking out against the monarchy. However, since he now lives in exile in both Dubai + Saudi Arabia (a monarchy), his motivations are NOT clear.
