I absolutely LOVED this soundtrack when I was little (was actually the first CD my dad ever bought to go with our new CD player). Still do, it just is awesome! However, about 20 years later, when I was in college, I ended up buying the movie having NEVER seen it. The movie, sadly, did not live up to the soundtrack for me. I will say one thing through....Diane Lane is gorgeous!!
Brilliant film. So ahead of it's time. Appearances by The Blasters, Lee Ving of Fear, music by Ry Cooder, neo-noir cinematography, Diane Lane at 19...wow. I was maybe 9 when i saw this. Still one of my favorites.
If they remade it they most likely fuck it up. But if it had to be done, Fincher would be my choice.
This movie wasnt THAT bad! Christsakes; it was a great date movie in H.S. The music was good (Ry Cooder awsome) and remember what the Pop Culture was like in 83/84. M. Jackson, Culture Club, neon clothes, huge hair. Shit, the music in this was awsome. Cooder, Blasters, etc. 2 or 3 songs made top 40 radio. I havent seen this movie in 20 yrs. but would like to buy it on dvd. Then I could show my daughter what the 80's were like.
All about the mythology of rock and roll...best summation I ever read on this movie was "Queen Of the Hop is kidnapped by Leader Of the Pack and Soldier Boy comes home to rescue her."
There is suppose to be a copy in 70mm but never saw that version of it...
I like movies like this, but I gotta be in the mood. Same with early 80's Hip Hop flicks (Beat St., Break'n, etc). I like to make it an "80's nite". Watch a few 70-80-s commercials from Youtube, play some Atari, maybe make some Jiffy Pop w/Tab Cola, & watch the movies. It's more of an "experience" really. I've even introduced my young nieces/nephews to it. On special occasions I even break out the vintage Star Wars & GI Joe toys & tell'em, "this was like a Fri. a night in the early 80's."
I saw this in a theatre way back in 1984. I had no idea what it was. I was exhausted after a long day at work but I was curious. The movie started, the Dolby stereo came blasting out and I was mesmerized for the whole movie. It's not any masterpiece but it's strong, fun and full of energy. It works on TV but up a theatre it was GREAT:)
They made a mistake with this movie, it was half a rock opera and half a lame action movie, the producers should have just turned the thing into a musical.
Rock'n'Roll? Sounds more like New Wave (which is fine because I like both). The use of lever-action rifles makes it feel like a Western. Most vigilante films have the same spirit as a Western. Travis Bickle was even refered to as a "cowboy."
@psykosel Only T2. It was a modififed Winchester 1887, a lever-action shotgun. He used a SPAS-12 in T1 and a Remington 870 in T3. Kyle Reese used an Ithaca 37 in T1. Young Reese used a Remington 870 in TS. Sarah used a Remington 870 in T2. All the Remington 870s were different configurations. Arnold also used an M-79 and a General Electric XM-214 in T2. Jesse Ventura used an XM-214 (with an M-60 forearm) in Predator.
Funny thing about this trailer...Willem Dafoe doesn't get a mention! This was one of his earliest films, his pre-Platoon era so to speak. Diane Lane is her usual gorgeous self. This is a great 80's flick similar in style to Rumblefish and Eddie & The Cruisers.

YES it is an inspiration to that game...so many elements were borrowed.im glad i wasnt the only one who made that observation. had alot of fun smashing cars on final fight
OMG!!! Just like Bubblegum Crisis even the music....amazing...never seen this movie but im a HUGE fan of the old Bubblegum Crisis....this totally blew my mind, now i gotta see it lol
@echo1v depends on your taste of film. its a great movie. just a little cheesy and predictable. its by no means a clockwork orange or citizen cane but a fun movie none the less.
Take tough guys and tough girls, mix 'em with '50's and '80's styles, toss in some old school rock, and you've go this. Without seeing the film or the trailer, I'm sure the description sounds like a train wreck, but nothing could be further from the truth. The soundtrack is excellent as is everyone in it.
Walter Hill did the Warriors, which explains that. I want to see this some time because I always love Walter Hill stuff and I remember Pare from Greatest American Hero (he went on to have a long B movie career). I am a huge Wilem Dafoe fan and I love the song from this sound track "I Can Dream About You" by Dan Hartmann.
Some of what made anime in those times was inspired by Streets of Fire. Incidentally, this seems like a movie that Patrick Swayze would play in, but maybe thats me.
I hear that Capcom's Cody Travers was based off of Tom Cody. Hence the name. While Cody's girlfriend, Jessica is based on Ellen. Who is Tom Cody's girlfriend.
While a cult classic here, this definitely was a huge movie in Japan. The video games Final Fight and Streets Of Rage were definitely inspired by this film. Also, there was a lot of pop-idol-driven action anime that was very popular in Japan around this time like Macross and Megazone 23, which has a scene in the beginning where the main characters see this movie in the movie theatres.
This came out a year after I was born and I didn't watch it until I was like 13, but I remember having a huge crush for Diane Lane because of this movie...
I watched Streets of Fire on TV, its rerun, VDO, VCD, DVDs. Too bad I didn't have a chance to watch it in theatre (I was 4 when the movie came out). That would be quite an experience.
@nkruttayatorn I was 15 when it came out, I watched it at least 3x in the cinema, and have watched it since altogether probably 25-30 times in German and in English (and I'm actually no weirdo, lol). It's THE movie of my teenage time, when I still believed in heros and thought women would need to be rescued by guys. Gladly I grew up, but I still know why I fell in love with "Tom Cody" and wanted to be like "Ellen Aim". And the two Steinman songs belong still to my alltime favorites.
@nkruttayatorn Oh it was! I remember seeing this from the balcony of an old movie theater and like on the bottom floor it was just a sea of people clapping. Then when they stopped the audience was laughing because in the next theater people were clapping for Purple Rain.
It's one of the best action films of the 1980's. A unique vision mingling everything from old westerns to biker movies and elements of film noir. Most people just didn't know what to make of it. They expected "48 Hours" and got something they'd never seen before. I don't think it has a "cult" following, just a lot of folks who like it. It's likely sold ten times more DVD's than it ever sold tickets.
Brilliant movie from my childhood. I love it so much - great action/music/adventure/romance movie with catchy storyline and beautiful Diane Lane and Michael Pare
What an impact this film had on me and everyone who was a teen at the time. Every girl had a crush on Michael Paré, every boy fell for Diane Lane.
I remember buying the soundtrack LP right after leaving the theatre and listening to it over and over again and knowing all the lyrics by heart.. "Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young" in particular has never stopped playing at my house to this day; some things just have the power to take you back in time and make you feel young and happy again.
Wait, trash flick?! This is from the same director dude that made The Warriors, Homeboy. I thought you knew. This film didn't make cult classic status for no reason.
Homeboy, lol. It is definitely trash. Just because it made a cult, does not mean it is not trash. Look at Braindead for instance. Trash doesn't necessarily mean, that it's a bad movie. Trash nowadays is some kind of sub-genre.
Do you have any idea how much money does Tom accept at the end, I can't recall and I lost the movie, I'm on a bet with my brother and he actually has to lose! haha Thanks anyway
Do you have any idea how much money does Tom accept at the end, I can't recall and I lost the movie, I'm on a bet with my brother and he actually has to lose! haha Thanks anyway
I also loved this movie as a kid, and there is a sequel in the works with Michael Pare and Deborah Van Valkenburgh reprising their roles from the original film. It is titled Road To Hell
I loved how gritty this movie was when I first seen it as a kid. Even now at 33 years of age I still say it has that appeal that brings the movie to street level and makes it all the more appealing.
They should have made a sequel to it, and in fact, maybe still could? Diane Lane is still gorgeous to this day! ;)
it really does piss me off that so many people dont like this movie. im 18 years old and first saw it with my grandpa when i was 11 and loved it then also. it was suppose to be one of 3 but since so many people are blind to great work they canceled any chance of a sequel even. oh an i also love the ending fight between raven and tom.
I loved the fight at the end with the sledgehammers one of the iconic moments i remember from my childhood, yeah i dug this movie. I also liked the two standout songs on the soundtrack i can dream about you and tonight is what it means to be young.
I love this movie and the music too. The fact is I don't see any bad comments for the public about this movie.
The film received mostly negative reviews from critics when it was first released. It currently has a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. "problematically crude"
Sequel
Streets of Fire was intended to be the first in a trilogy of action films two sequels would be The Return of Tom Cody and The Far City.
i don't understand why the hell people don't like this movie...for me, it's one of the best movies ever. Nothing beats a rock n roll fable...with an extraordinary soundtrack.
what is this movie exactly about? and don't just tell me, it's about a rock star who gets kidnapped and her brave ex-boyfriend comes to rescue her and so on.
I think what made this movie less than the sum of the parts is the heavy 1950's themes juxtaposed against 1980's imagery. It's just jarring. It doesn't help that many of the songs were made by Jim Steinman, the king of over-the-top camp mock-theatrical music a la Meat Loaf.
This was an exceptional movie that got no play. Pare was excellent; Diane Lane smoking hot. It holds up well despite bullshit critics...an enjoyable film.
please, someone must explain why this movie was a critical and a box-office failure! I mean, I'm not saying that this is an outstanding film, but it's cool, it's never boring, it's never ridicolous, it's strange and sometimes "over the edge" but I like it for these reasons. There so many other movies that were box-officese succeses but are practically scum! I love this movie!
I <3 this movie right in its FACE. This movie+Blade Runner-Anime=my head asplode.

Refresh my memory,
the brunette at 1:16 , how did she fit into this? Was she like his sister or something like that???
Anyway, she kinda got my attention more then Dian Lane for some odd reason.

Man, I remember so looking forward to watching this flick.
And when I finally did, I remember thinking that the visuals kicked ass, Diane Lane looked fine, but the dialogue went nowhere. Fast.

I remember having a HUGE crush on Diane Lane on this movie...

Wasn't Final FIght (the videogame) based on this trash flick?!
arschsau2050 3 years ago
Wait, trash flick?! This is from the same director dude that made The Warriors, Homeboy. I thought you knew. This film didn't make cult classic status for no reason.
Mysterwright 2 years ago
Homeboy, lol. It is definitely trash. Just because it made a cult, does not mean it is not trash. Look at Braindead for instance. Trash doesn't necessarily mean, that it's a bad movie. Trash nowadays is some kind of sub-genre.

Diane Lane is still gorgeous to this day! ;)

it really does piss me off that so many people dont like this movie. im 18 years old and first saw it with my grandpa when i was 11 and loved it then also. it was suppose to be one of 3 but since so many people are blind to great work they canceled any chance of a sequel even. oh an i also love the ending fight between raven and tom.

the tough guys in Walter Hill's movies always have the same voice, or same tone of voice. Boring voice: Sure ya will, and I'll be waitin.
Sounds like Ajax.

Greasers4ever 3 years ago
It's kind of like that, the reason it's famed is the same reason as footloose or Flash Dance.
It's all about the music.

i got to see it in the later half of the 1980's and bought the vhs in the bargin bin.
loved it so much i bought the LVD to see it digital.
love the 1950's meet the 1980's world.
great actors in it.
i hope that universal will put a special edition blue ray soon.
i just bought the sound track on cd for my i pod because my cassette tape broke.
this movie rocks!
