@GuillotineLaw In the book Simon was dark-haired and he'd had a bloody nose, so had blood all over his face. He then crawled on his hands and knees out of the dark forest and into the middle of the chanting, hysterical group. Certainly in the midst of the tribe's fear and blood-lust, he was an easy target and the violent tribe got carried away. Very sad in the book. The film is good but doesn't capture the emotions from the novel.

They must have known that was Simon, or at least by his voice that it was just one of the kids who hadn't joined the tribe and not the beast. In the 1990 version he had a glowstick so it may have been a bit scary to see something glowing running towards them but in this one he was going past, not towards. They had no excuse. Was it maybe a ritual Jack was trying to start? Where they would kill somebody from the other side pretending he was the beast?

Yes Piggy and Ralph took part in Simon's death that's why Ralph calls it murder. Piggy is noted as the 'superego' a superego is a person who wants to justify everything...they want to make everything right in such a way that it doesn't seem realistic. That's why he was like" "no it wasn't what you said! it was dark and we were scared!' When the boys started stabbing Simon they didn't KNOW it was him yet they subconciously knew. Their sane sides were clouded over by fear and distress.

I think the boy's frenzy here comes more out as in the 1990 remake. The voices screaming their ecstatic "song" are just creepy, you can really hear their panic. It just shows the power of fear and despair.

@conetta97 Actually in the book when it said they ripped with teeth and claws it was a metaphor, they used spears. When one is part of the mob they loose their identity and become the beast. Earlier in the book when Simon is hallucinating and the Lord of the Flies says: "There isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the Beast" and "You'll only meet me down there!" This is refering to the boys down on the beach. Sorry, I'm just really particular about stuff like this. @_@;

I like both movies, but I must say that even without the flash of blood and gore in the 90's version, this scene is much more brutal. The screams, the music, and perhaps because it's black and white... A perfect death scene if there ever was one, in my opinion. (Though I really do love Simon.)

The scene where he talks to the "Lord of the Flies" is paralleled to Jesus's temptation from the Devil in the Bible. "Lord of the Flies" is loosely translated from"Beelzebub", another name for the Devil, mentioned in the Bible. Also, his death is sometimes paralleled to Jesus's sacrificial death.
