@bigbadpoo I don't think the Silence were behind the TARDIS exploding. It specifically said "Silence Will Fall" therefore I think the Silence were its target. It would erase the universe to get rid of it and was able to take control of the TARDIS to do it. This is one powerful being one wouldn't want to mess with. But indeed the destruction of the universe lead to its (re)creation. The universe is based on the memory and map of itself and the TARDIS explosion brought it everywhere in all of time
@viridismonasteriense well, someone did try and explode that tardis. it had to be someone, and if the silence is part of the story arc, then that is probably them..
@bigbadpoo well that little girl who may turn out to be amy's daughter was a timelord and she was a main part of the silence so maybe it was her who blew it up?
@viridismonasteriense Nope. The Pandorica had a restoration field, not a creation field. It restored things because they already existed. If it were a time loop, it would be going back to the beginning, not carrying on. If it were a time loop, we'd be back with the 1st Doctor or redoing the series, but never going beyond. Timezones are not different points in time, but different points in space due to the light levels and so the body clocks of organic creatures.
@dared111 No, the Doctor called it a 'restoration field' to simplify it. Timezones ARE different points in time. It's in the word. If this wasn't the case the erasure would've only occurred in the relative 'present', the day of the wedding, but no it happened all over the universe all over time sparing Earth temporarily because it was at the 'heart of the storm'. By 'restoring it', the universe was created to be based on itself and it exists because it already existed, without a real beginning!
@FinchDenton Time paradoxes are allowed to use circular logic. By travelling back in time B can cause in the future A to cause B in the past. It doesn't make sense but it does. That's what paradoxes are essentially about.
The logic behind the choice or method of explanation cannot be tied into the logic of the explanation itself.
Time paradoxes are, at least in most definitions, utilizations of tradition circular logic. However, the decision behind using the plot device of "A time loop. A paradox." is, in itself, circular logic.
And that kind of extra-narrative explation is, in no way whatsoever, "genius", in fact is the well-known folly of poor storytellers to cover up plot holes.
@FinchDenton The causality loop was, in my opinion, the entire point, not the cover-up! By recreating, the universe was created which would require no creator because the universe has no beginning, in the sense that it's based on itself: How did the Tenth Doctor know to create an implosion to cancel out the supernova in 'Time Crash'? Because Five saw him do it. Where did the information come from? It's a paradox.
This is a show about time-travel. It happens. Deal with it.
@viridismonasteriense It is a second big bang, it is a reboot of the universe. The doctor says so in the episodes a few times. he rebooted the universe the exactly the way it was.
@swiftjt Yeah, but the Doctor tends to simplify things in such a way that it's actually nothing like the real thing. Just like in the episode 'Curse of the Black Spot' he explains to Amy how the two ships could exist in the same space and he says it's a universe inside a universe except it's nothing like that. Or in "Space" where he tells Amy and Rory to think of a banana, except what he's describing is nothing like the banana: "Forget the banana!" It's technically the second but also 1st Bang.
@viridismonasteriense I havent seen the episdoe in a while but im pretty sure theres nothing that actually indicates the doctor creates the first big bang since he calls it big bang 2 a few times. He says the restotation field recreated the universe based on the the original one. Though you could be right and its one big paradox that the universe is actually based on itelf thus being no actual start point. Tho Amys not the sharpest person so the doctor may have been dumbing it down lol.
@swiftjt Actually, I've been doing some thinking and I think I have in fact been wrong.
The first universe was erased. The second universe is a copy, like Rory was, restored through trickery, but the essence restored through remembering. And just like Rory wasn't less a human as an Auton, the universe isn't less the universe being a copy and basically being itself. The first universe was erased BUT that does mean the 2nd universe --we're in now-- WAS exploded into being by the Doctor.
@viridismonasteriense You're all pretty wrong, it was made clear if you watched the episode that it is extremely simple. He restored the universe, that's all. Just sort of restored it. It collapsed, and then the it all came back together. The way it works is that, say you have a cracked vase, and then the vase smashes - that's what happened to the universe. But instead of making a new vase, the restoration field pulled it back together, explaining why some of the cracks would still exist.
@viridismonasteriense Continuing my previous comment, the River Song we see in the Library and at the crash of Byzantium has already gone through The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang, and she references the end of the universe in her first appearance and the Pandorica in her second, yet we haven't seen it, further confirming that it would be the same universe.
The River we see in series 6 is from before The Big Bang, the River we see in the said story has already met post-Big Bang Doctor. So...
@viridismonasteriense He rebooted the universe. He didn't make it, which makes the Second Big Bang. If it was an ontological paradox as you said, the cracks in time would still exist. But since it was rebooted, they aren't there in series 6. But we still have a connection to the "Silence Will Fall" and "Time Runs Out" ark so I dunno, but that's just what I think happened.
@MrFitzonic Yeah, you're right it was a reboot. I've come to that understanding now myself since the time I posted that. The new universe is a copy of the old universe which was erased. Which makes it the cause of the second universe and the title is actually right all along. The second big bang. Should I remove the original comment? Is that possible? Yeah, I will.
@viridismonasteriense I've been thinking about it. I guess this means that the only adventures that didn't really happen were the Doctor's encounters with the cracks. Which leaves the Angel two-parter something to be debatable. But they must have remembered it. But this was in River's past, and she remembered the universe being rebooted, and soon had an adventure when the cracks wer---aah my head. I think I've reached the point where I just can't do anything but enjoy the series :L
@MrFitzonic Yeah, it's weird. The universe came into being because the old atoms from the old universe inside the Pandorica were spread via the TARDIS explosion into every timezone in existence, recreating the big bang and everything would I think evolve and come into being naturally like it used to, following the lines of the old universe, the same pattern. But the Doctor told Amy to remember. Through her Rory returned, the real him, and through her the universe must've returned. But how much?
@MrFitzonic "Amy's Choice" foreshadowed this. Did it really happen? Or was it all just a dream? (Since the cracks never happened, except they did) And it might've even foreshadowed River's birth (the baby) and Rory's death. River's destined to kill a very good man, and he's the best one we know. He's even better than the Doctor. As the Doctor himself said: "Good men don't need rules. And this isn't a good time to find out why I have so many."
