  • @465reading HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Give Canada more money! We want more money, buddy!

  • @wgaamerica How did you make this video? Premier Pro or what?! It's AMAZING!

  • monopolist fighting other monopolist. pointless video. copyrights are wrong. media needs to be open sourced.

  • this is exactly why more people are creating comics, cartoon, novels, etc exclusively for the internet.

  • watch?v=pyEG1LzMAlc

  • Carlyle owned this video.

  • @Ihavealife100 I agree...Carlyle spoke the truth. Coming from a writer's pov (him)...it made me not feel like the ONLY one who thinks this strike became senseless and pretty stupid.

Maybe if a writer gets totally screwed on their work then hellyeah I'll feel bad, because someone else is profiting off of their work. This video though is dumb as hell. AWWW you want more money because the shit load of money your making isnt enough? What they get in a week, I dont get in 2 full months of LABOR!

  • @mhaze210 Then don't work in LABOR. People with talent are, and have always been, paid more than the average grunt. If you have a talent, sell it. Profit from it. Otherwise, don't complain. Also keep in mind that a lot of the time writers are out of work so what they make has to last until the next time they find a gig, which from what i understand can be a while.

  • how about you stop crying about how much money you get, do you have any fucking idea how many of those fucking movies get sold that you are writing? even if it's a shitty movie you'll still get payed a fuck load, so stop fucking complaining.

  • nice powerpoint fucktard

  • Comment removed

  • The thing is, that the writers don't get any extra money? Shit.

I could see if I wrote the script to a show or movie and SOLD it for like 100 thousand. Then I could see if I didn't get anymore money for selling it.

  • Wait, THIS is my future pay as a writer??? Ripoff artists!!! We have lives, too!!!

  • @MrKirbyXIII COME AT ME BRO!!!!!!

  • Wait, so you writers are comfortable with 8 cents a dollar? Still don't get it.

  • Is Seth Meyers in the writers guild?

  • /watch?v=hCp3LIfkIcw

    /watch?v=hCp3LIfkIcw

    /watch?v=hCp3LIfkIcw

É Assim Que Tem Que Ser !

  • 48% of writers are unemployed at any one time, that is the markets way of saying that we have a 48% surplus of writers. Any industry where we have a surplus of something the value is driven down until it normalizes.

  • what happen to writting a story because you want people to like it..... oh wait we need money to live in this world nevermind(backspace)

  • @brandonent50 Thats why I've always thought that money in a weird sorta way is kinda like respect. "Hey how come he gets that and i dont?"

  • Yea, anyone can write... Hate to break it to you guys, but I would have just hired a bunch of scabs and let you guys rot on the street with your signs...

  • +SUPPORT.

  • i loved prison break!!!!!!

    that show was awesome.

also the writer's strike was just a bunch of complaining little bitches who disrupted tv schedule's for a few months.

  • How about not writing for corporations and write for yourselves?

Theres whole world out there if you get your head out of the corporations ass

And if you haven't realize it yet the world has changed and both music, movies as well as books are changing to a more participatory culture at the detriment of copyright the RIAA and MPAA

  • 48% unemployment? Sure sign of a saturated market.

That's the market telling you to change jobs. That means that there is twice as much supply as demand, and price will fall correspondingly. Not everyone gets to be a writer, as nice as that would be.

Once that 48% of the writers moves on to viable employment, you can expect the value of the remaining writers to increase.

But hey, thanks for the heart-wrenching tale of woe.

  • @032125 You're interpreting the figure incorrectly. In many situations, writers work on contract. Because of this, it means that they are unemployed for the majority of the year, and then go on a two or three month project for a large sum of cash. They could usually rely on the pittance royalties in between contracts to make due and keep themselves afloat, but with the rates as low as they were, their budgets couldn't survive to their next contract, but studios made millions from those reruns.

  • @DavidEasthope Sounds like they need to do a bit more negotiations, then, before they sign the contract, eh?

  • @DavidEasthope The problem is so many people can write, that the market is saturated. For every book that makes it, thousands are written. More supply, lower wages. Much of the value in a best seller is provided by the corporation that selects the book from everything on the rubbish heap to promote and distribute into a best seller.

  • lol you all fucked up in the guild strike

  • The whole entertainment industry is polluted with greed. Quit crying, millions of people don't even have jobs, especially not ones where working freelance from home is even an option.

  • i dont care about htese people to be honest these days i could write beter stories from my shitter they probably need a pay cut to get htere arses in gear and strat workign on some good stories

  • Banning thousands of writers from ever doing any movie or series just for not agreeing with the strike. People like this are the reason we cannot have good movies.

  • Plonkers.

  • if you are losing your house and health care then you are in the wrong job idiot.

  • what they don't say is that that extra 4 cent difference is the difference between a tv writer making 40,000 ti 80,000 on a bad selling show or 400,000 to 800,000 on a good selling show its not a miniscule thing that they where asking for.

  • As a huge Bill Maher and Jon Stewart fan...and a union member myself ( I work in retail and am represented by UFCW Local 7 out of Denver, Colorado,) WGA had (and still has) my full support! Union solidarity NOW! :)

  • @ilovemycat00 You work retail, and you're in a union? What in the fuck has this world come to? What's next, unions for paperboys?

  • i dont think they realise that if they get more money, then there will be more people wanting to be writers, and then they will be back to square one with unnemployment at its highest.

though i do apprisiate that writers need a pension too and the internet could destroy that...

  • you know I completelly understand the writers concerns and why they went on strike BUT WHY THE FUCK DID YOU HAVE TO SCREW UP PRISON BREAK SEASON 3,IT COULD HAVE BEEN FREAKIN AWESOME AND YOU DECIDED TO GO ON STRIKE AND PISS EVERY SINGLE FAN OFF.THERE I HOPE YOUR HAPPY NOW.

  • When people realize that it's the writer's and director's that are responsible for making the shows they love, then they'll see that what the studios are doing is wrong.

It's always been a business, but it seems to have become even more so. With marketing out of control and digital entertainment on the rise, the corporations are taking advantage of aspiring artists and working professionals.

Learn the system and learn the law and you can prevent yourself from being raped by Hollywood.

  • this isn't 1 person making this 4 cents buddy,, its pretty much everyone involved in the movie getting 4 cents.

  • i dont know shit about this, but i love prison break.

  • While I may agree with some aspects of this.. You guys just sound greedy. Guys, writers make THOUSANDS a week and yet they want that doubled? They make more in a week then most do in a month. All in all? Both are being greedy.

  • amen brother ... workers of the world pay attention --- once you give something up ... you NEVER get it back!!!

  • please don't flame, this question is not directed at the writers guide, but a more general question related to people that go on strike.

what's the difference between blackmailing and going on strike? i mean...it's like "give me money or i will ruin your life with the dirty secrets i know" compared to "give me money or i will stop working therefore your business dies"...?

  • think of it as a game of cards ... you play every card you have ... striking is a labor card ... it's always the last card we play ... most people on the labor side struggle just to get by and the struggle is greater when we strike ... we don't strike to put anyone out of business ... we strike for our our small slice of the pie ... if the business dies, our jobs die with it ... no business can survive without labor ... think on that

  • honestly I'd like to see a video done by someone who knows the facts but isn't on a side

  • look in the responces and look at crylys vid

  • I'm not the greatest in math but how does 2.5% of every dollar equal $0.08 out of every $19.99 DVD sold. Someone please explain.

  • Is this video why you've been demanding that YT erase unauthorized content?

  • in short you got fucked up

  • the longer this is dragged out the longer we have to put up with special effects completely taking over cinema and the decline of writing my generation is already transforming into mindless morons who have there brains rotted by modern storylines that have no substance look at the golden age of cinema the writers were considered gods

there is probally a good reason why it weas thus the golden age and producing intelligent thought provoking films

    just an idea?

  • lol,

all the whiners commenting are being rather unreasonable. if you're going to complain about them wanting more money, and they already have huge "pockets",

trying writing something for a studio,

    they deserve the pay increase,

    after all,

they are indeed putting their ideas onto the television screen you probably waste a considerable amount of your life on.

i dont see why an extra 4 cents is such a big deal, just suck it up,

or go write your own screenplays

  • Why did you take down my comment ? I guess you don't want people to know the truth.

  • What sort of comment did you make?

  • this is disgraceful, i'm looking for frank capra's ww2 documentaries, and the WGA has hijacked it name! a bunch of whiny overpaid writers, who don't even pay their own staff well should be in no way compared to the bravery and sacrifice of WW2

  • 4-8 cents on the dollar sounds reasonable to me. They should get this imo.

  • This is a good video with a good explanation, but you should remove the background music. It just muddies up the audio and makes it more difficult to understand the voice over.

  • I would be glad if the authors rights would last only 30 years

  • well thats explains it simply, i read the wiki article and didnt understand shit

  • @xmido your not the only one. until I found this video, nothing I found gave me anything even close to a clear answer of what was going on. All it was were just how TV shows were being affected, even though I just wanted to know WHY there was a strike in the first place. you'd think it wouldn't be hard to explain.

I can't stand TV/movie/Comics/etc. executives. they're crooked, corrupt, greedy and are constantly shitting all over the creative process.

  • hollywood sucks shit!!

  • Comment removed

  • I don't think its at all fair writers that writers get the shaft, while the big companies rake in the cash on something they didn't even create. That's America for you.

Plus I want the cash I'm paying for Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies DVD's to go to Bryan Fuller, because he deserves every penny.

  • @Aenect - did you realize that the works of many writers weren't original anyway? many of the films come from ideas stolen from ordinary people like myself

  • for those who disagree if it werent for writer's and the passion that they have for writting, there wont be anything good for you to see on tv or read about, why shouldnt writers get paid good money for what they write? this year alone i've seen a whole bunch of crappy movies, , and they've never complain about the libary, is unfair that somebody else benefits from their work stupid!!!! that's all.

  • Watch CarlyleSpill's video about this. I think you may feel differently afterwards.

  • no wonder movies just keep getting shittier and shittier nowadays

  • Can you imagine how much an author is denied every single time I read their books again and lend them to all my family, friends, coworkers, neighbours...?

Have you ever thought of how much an author is deprived of because of public libraries lending the books to whoever cares to have them for a week or two and never paying the poor scribblers a single dime?

What has the world come to? Is Gezus asleep?

  • I agree, DirkXXXVI. It seems as though whenever a poor bunch of writers wants cash for their "chicken feed" scripts, they'll complain and ask cash for their handy work.

They should work harder and put quailty into what they make, lest their "writers strike" will kill them fast due to failed films and tv shows.

  • sry, of course I know economy sucks, but still...

  • So is the strike over??

  • Unfortunately yes. I still can't believe the writers won with all the crap being placed on market by Hollywood. The only thing I thought worth keeping were the writers working in television as a good amount of them put out quality work, while the movies being released these days are usually a joke.

  • Mr. Abootman, kindly set yourself adrift.

The gumball and the buy one, get one free coupon at Bennigan's just didn't do it.

Carlyle was dead on, both sides got greedy.

  • Juuust a quetion:

    What are residuals? :D and..

Does health insurance in north america suck?

  • Yes and no. There are times in America where the price for care in some cases is very high however the quality of care is top class. Thanks to the American System I got completly cured of a condition that usually last a lifetime. If I was in Canada I probably would have had to wait about a year just to get treated. A lot of people think that UHC will fix everything but usually those people are the ones that ignore the horror stories from countries like Canada and the UK.

  • Corporate greed! Maximum efficiency! Outsourcing! Profit!

Soon all the work will be done by chinese and indian children who will write 4 episodes for a nanocent and sign a scientology-like million year cross-generation contract for the BIG FACELESS STUDIO OF AMERICA

    (B.F.S.O.A!?) Ha- ha- ha! (-_-)

  • But... book writers are ok? right?

  • im not sure jesus christ knew how to wright

  • he did get a movie out of it

  • Jesus may not get paid for his teachings but the millions of religions that pervert his word do. The fact that Jesus has been dead for almost 2000 years and he was not the one who wrote the word other did.

  • I have a challenge for you, write your won comedies and stop expecting society to entertain the shit out of you for free if you are not willing to give writers their due wages.

  • Writers pay from CREATIVE SCREENWRITING Staff writers 2800a week. FREELANCE MINIMUMS each script. 30min cable-12,000 60min cable 22,000 NETWORK 30min-21,500 ie: Ugly betty 60min 31,700 ie Law and order So lets see, average crew on L&O for one season(10 months of work MIN 12 hr days in all kinds of weather and conditons = $90-100,000 WRITER@ min rate- 4 episodes $126,800.00(maybe a month- two max of work)
  • in my opinion, as a writer myself, it's not about the money. it's about sharing ywhat you learned, what your thinking and what you know to people, by writing inspiring stories. [=

    [STUPID COMMENT]

  • reply to katrina - So if you make something amazing that could make history you wouldn't want to get paid for it? just give it away for free, you are smart.

  • hie.i watched this video to understand more about the writers strike. i just dont understand why they have a strike about wizards of waverly place on disney channel, and i tryed to do a little research on it but i didnt find much.so please please please if you could reply back giving me more info about that i would appreciate it. thank you =)

  • I have to be honest, I don't really have any sympothy for the writers. When they write better movies and stop upping out Cr*P, them maybe I could feel for them but otherwise they just a bunch of white folks looking for a handout. I used to sell shoes, should I get 4 cents everytime a basketball player scores a point in some shoes I sold him? Rowlings wrote Harry Potter, should she get for cents every time I read it? This all seems rather rediculuse to me. Be happy you working.

  • WOW i cant believe how ridiculous what you just said is. First off all, you seel SHOES YOU FUCKING IDIOT HOW HARD IS THAT TO DO>??? WHy dont you try Writing something that people will actually watch? IMO there are TONS of great shows out there its just people like you who are SPOILED ROTTEN and always expect to be entertained 24 fucking 7 who whine and bitch and moan becuase likfe isnt picture perfect. GIVE ME A BREAK!! BE HAPPY YOUR WOKRING?? THEY COULD HAVE ALL BEEN LAWYERS IF THEY WANTED!!!

  • Wow, Mr. Racist got to stir his ugly head up. How hard is selling shoes, maybe you should ask next tiime you go in to buy some and you will get an ear full. I dare say it is harder then writting an episode of Full House. I have seen High School plays written and directed by teenagers that were much better than what is on TV today. All the writers could have bee lawyers huh? I don't believe that and neither does anyone else. Writers should get payed but millionairs on strike is stupid.

  • do you honestly think brainlessly pitching shoes is harder than writing an episode of full house? You have clearly underestimated the cleverness of writers and OVERestimated what it takes to be a lawyer. These days ANYBODY with enough resolve could take the bar, but not everyone has the wit and NATURAL talent and creative ability to be a writer. True, there is crap on the tube today, but even the CRAP is hard to write! Most people dont know how to write comedy because most people are BORING!

  • How did this stop in the end?

I completely agree to be honest, how much writers get paid is sick compared to the million dolalr salary that the actors often get, when they are doing equal work.

I'm glad that the writers strike took place, as it shook the tv/film industry enough that they would seriously analyse the importance of writers.

  • it this still going?

  • No.

  • Intimidation in workshops and in factories, in assembly halls and at mass

demonstrations, will always meet with success as long as it does not have to encounter

the same kind of terror in a stronger form.

  • Makes total sense with me...I'm a little late on the subject but why couldn't they give the ppl 4 more cents? It's not a fortune...so what they would be losing 4 cents...BIG WHOOP!

  • makes sence to me.

  • HAHA! Whats stopping us? Oh I don't know maybe the fact that you probably couldn't write something funny like a skit for Saturday Night Live or maybe you not being able to write a show and you not having the ability to come up with something people would enjoy thats whats stopping us.

  • Lol, I was glad when the writers were on strike. They all should be fired and replaced by Mexicans.

    Current TV sucks anyway.

  • Learn your real worth writers. Without you, the businesses do not have a product.

  • is this why Wizards of Waverly Place has only 5 episodes (each of which I have watched.... 12 TIMES!!!)

  • They are trying to worm their way into Fremantle. (American Idol)

I will do what I can to sabatoge them. fuck WGA.

  • When I told the WGA that as a producer it appears I have been blacklisted on some level by supporting them, they stopped communicating with me.

    Fuck them.

They lied to their membership and called a strike days after they said they wouldn't -- tricking them into signing authority.

They betrayed editors for America's top model who supported them.

    They betrayed reality.

    Fuck them.

(this is not my screename. I can't take any more bullets from WGA)

    Fuck them.

  • its a good cause, and ur really not asking much, ill support u 100%!

  • what the hell do the corporations have such a huge problem with blowing your 80% cut back? bigger financial losses occure each episode i'm SURE, and to hold out for so long over such a small percentage is ridiculous, the company's are losing massive revenue, audiences and popularity every week they hold out. I can't get over how stupid a business choice these companies are making

  • Isnt it this the american way?

  • WRITE A MOVIE ABOUT IT

  • lol that might just cause the same problem

  • Writers pay from CREATIVE SCREENWRITING Staff writers 2800a week. FREELANCE MINIMUMS each script. 30min cable-12,000 60min cable 22,000 NETWORK 30min-21,500 ie: Ugly betty 60min 31,700 ie Law and order So lets see, average crew on L&O for one season(10 months of work= $90-100,000 WRITER@ min rate- 4 episodes $126,800.00(maybe a month- two max of work) POOR WRITERS
  • what do the studio's get?

  • I fucking hate corporate greed - I support you all the way

  • It would be funny if while their on strike the studios hire other writers hahahahahahaha!!!!

I hope this strike is resolved fast because Dean is dead and I wanna know if hes coming back.

  • I thought the writer's strike was over?If it isn't,how are you guys faring.I support you.

  • is that true ?

  • you've got my support.

  • Without the writers' support, you don't get any money at all.

  • Well crew can work in other things that DON'T involve writers AND without the crew writers are just WRITING-books or bad internet blogs. WITH OUT CREW YOU GET NOTHING.

FUNNY thing is all WE GET IS A CHECK. Based on numbers I listed below WRITER make ON THIRD in ONE SHOT what the crew makes in an entire season.

  • good shouting.

  • excellent yelling, not yelling and yelling again

  • Hand back your overtime generated by the strike. whiny crew members

  • Real shows work 12 hour days= 8hrs +4hrs OT @time and a half. Just like the rest of the working world. NOTHING extra generated by the strike. Just less shows.

  • i am backing you allthe way

  • >=( I can't believe how little the writers get paid! Dude, that is just wrong. >x>

  • man this movie stinks!

now im on the writers guilds side!

Damn propaganda, making me change my mind!

  • thanks for the information

  • get a better mindset

  • Hear hear makes sense. It comes from cries that someone "hear, hear" an argument by another. Originally, it was something like "hear him, hear him!" in old British Parliament and such. The speaker is affirming support and insisting that others listen.

  • Okay, if writing's not a real job, then write me a novel in a week and tell me how easy it is. I expect to see it next Sunday.

  • NO U.

  • Do you produce the condensed versions then?

  • i don't know much about the details on how the whole writers/producers/studio works...but i was wondering why the writers don't get a MUCH bigger chunk of the profits? like double digits? how many writers are there typically for a show or movie? i can understand that if there are a lot of writers, then giving them a bigger percentage means it would add up among all the writers they would have to pay, but 4 cents per dollar? that's REALLY low compared to the studios making 4.5 billion in 3 years.

  • Capitalism can be abused like Communism

  • Hell yeah!!! How 'bout you give the writers $19.95 and you keep the freakin four pennies. Its their ideas, their movie concoction. They deserve it. Without them, you guys would be nothing(thats you studios)

  • I don't understand people who insist that for some bizarre reason the studios deserve ALL the money and the writers deserve....whatever they are tossed. If you believe that's fair please offer YOUR employer the same deal. :-) We have a ton of movies that are heavy on special effects but still pathetic. That is how corporations think---just throw money and hope it sells. But it takes great writing like No Country For Old Men to keep these industries alive. And that takes writers.

  • Wrong. In ANY original screenplay (Fargo, Juno, Chinatown), the writer creates the screenplay from scratch. Charlie Kaufman was not given "the background." He created the whole thing.

Same's true for most TV. Sorkin created the West Wing out of nothing. Same for Mitchell Hurwitz & "Arrested Development."

Or are you thinking of some episodes of TV shows, where a bare outline has been written? But again, in the majority of cases, the writer of the episode creates the outline himself.

  • yah im talking about episodes but even if your right, the writers still get paid alot. 2 cents every dollar is alot

they have already go that much money adn still theyre asking for more its the writers that are greedy.

  • actually.

most producers write the background & have a writer for them.

trust me, i come from a family full of producers, directors & i have a famous actress in my family.

i also have many friends with families like mine & friends with writers as parents who are aspiring writers themselves.

  • limewire 100% free :)

  • What an awesome video....

  • oh wow! this was really awsome of you! now I'm alot less mad about how alot of my favorite shows have stop playing!

  • This video explains the whole strike in a nice short little nutshell...

Too bad I didn't see it back when the strike was still happening.

  • I feel sorry for all of the "little guys" that lost their jobs because of this strike. I hope they have gotten or will get their jobs back.

  • wow so manipulative tell only the bad points. theres good points what theyre not showing. pfft complaining about getting rubbish pay. bah 4 cents is good simply because more than one dvd is gonna be bought 20 million dvd bought thats alot of money.

  • Tell me the good points and maybe I'll agree with you. :p

  • Hm, true. But not every dvd is sold in such high numbers. And when the price of a DVD drops or is at a low price upon release, the writers would recieve even less from residuals, right? Honestly, 8 cents going to the writers from a dvd sale shouldn't worry whoever the hell pays the writers to begin with, so why not?

  • of course they're not going to ask for twenty dollars more, they just want the extra 4 cents that they used to get before the big companies who make too much profit anyway decided to take it from them. its just greedy cooperations wanting more and more.

  • Maybe you're thinking of adapted screenplays, but those also come with huge challenges--to adapt "There Will Be Blood," PT Anderson significantly fleshed out the relationship between Daniel and his son and ignored the last 2/3rds of the book."Theyre currently trying to find new jobs": completely false. Every TV writer has been hired back, and Hollywood is eagerly greenlighting any script that's ready.

    Okay, we're done.

You don't know enough about screenwriting to be commenting. Troll.
