  • this is from 2009? Fuck yeah.

  • Bloody good to see funk making a return...love their stuff!

  • I know bluegrass when I hear it.

  • anyone know where i can cop a bass tab for this?

  • @kingandygonz find anything? this line is great

  • I just think of the 'Sugarfoot' Joke from Arrested Development... lul

  • Just saw them live tonight in Fresno. They were incredible!

  • love this band

  • Man , these guys are bringing back real oldschool funk & soul, they better keep it going

  • EEEEEEEXELLANT !!!

  • A band out of Texas playing a song called Sugarfoot.... methinks they're King of the Hill fans.

  • Awesome jam !

  • I like it.

  • Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears are the muthfuckin' TRUTH.

  • I have figured out what is wrong with this country & the world. Justin Bieber's "Baby" has received almost 1,400 times the number of views as this video has received. Any world in which this is the case is on the downslide!

  • Triple J...

  • Saw these guys in concert this month, and I have to say they rock hard in person. If you get the chance to see them live, do it.

  • Gahh its so refreshing when a modern band sounds this amazing and pure music no computerized crap or fancy electronics, if the world ever ends in 2012 and all the electricity is gone, they'll be still there partying it out till the end..!! :O xD

    =) =) =)

  • Check out Echotone the movie if you're into Black Joe and great Austin artists. Its awesome!

  • Awesome interview with Joe Lewis from SXSW 2011 on the SXSW flashbacks vimeo page!

  • Stylish like Speedometer

  • These guys are playing a show with As I Lay Dying!?!? Whaaaaat????

  • fuck you vevo

  • Love this band!!!!

  • @ppryan If 'kids these days are retarded and listen to crap' then how come me and all my friends hate the likes of Bieber and Ke$ha and would prefer to listen to soul or jazz any day of the week? Maybe you should get your facts right before accusing every young person of listening to 'chart music'.

  • i don't know what they're saying but they're AWEESOME! XD

  • I heard this song last night for the first time and I was just freaking out. I love it so much. I have to pass it on. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! Funkalicious!

    !

  • @OCButterfly99 holy fuck me too dude! like, right after swimming my friend showed it to me.. balls to the wall! i couldnt control myself

  • @Kirchenschlager lol, nice!!! I cant just listen to this song once when I come back on this channel. I have to get it at least twice. Makes me wild. Love it. Just read they have good deals on amazon on vinyl !!!!DANG!!!!!(ps, ball to the wall, cant control yourself is an awesome feeling!! lol ;D

  • This song rocks!! reminds me of a Mario Kart Track back in the N64!

  • This sounds like Sly and the Family Stone without the drugs...more tight and clean

  • These guys are VERY talented and have a great sound. If you listen to all their music, you can really see the origionality and diversity. Can't wait to see them live!

  • it says "bitch, i love you" on the keyboard

  • @modernlovely that's the name of one of their other songs.

  • That bass line is FUNKY AS HELL

  • absolutely love this song. but damn could the lead singer (Black Joe Lewis?) have any LESS charisma/ any LESS energy. this is an exciting/ high energy song and he seems completely uninterested. weird. dude...you gotta sell it!!!

  • @wonderturtle1000 well, first... he's not james brown. and second, it's kind of hard to dance like james brown when you're holding/playing an instrument that isn't a harmonica.

  • @xdownagainx " it's kind of hard to dance like james brown when you're holding/playing an instrument that isn't a harmonica." never mentioned James Brown. plus, this is a music video...he's lipsynching. no reason he cant put at least SOME energy into it. the song deserves it!!! great song.

  • Caramba!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I love these guys, good energy. happy person listening to good music makes the world a better place.

  • The bass player overplays. Saw them on Letterman and thought the same thing. Dude, let the groove breathe!

  • @PhDinExistence Just curious, how do you mean? He plays the same thing over and over again, with no variation.

  • so James . . . .you work for free and want NO MONEY? Where did you get electricty to run your free computer since you must be living in a tent or a cardboard box and eating free food?Everything should be free ? Do you walk around nude or wear leaves , or do you get free clothes too ? Was Sasquath Fest free or did steal tickets or sneak in ?

  • so James . . . .you work for free and want NO MONEY? Where did you get electricty to run your free computer since you must be living in a tent or a cardboard box and eating free food?Everything should be free ? Do you walk around nude or wear leaves , or do you get free clothes too ?

  • My God, why must I listen to these morons constantly putting Bieber down-face it, he has talent-everybody in the music industry knows it-these guys are so different from his music-wheres the comparision? And you want to discuss Britney Spears, look at those early videos-the girl can perform-the worlds a big place boys and girls-lots of room for all types of music

  • Just saw these guys at Sasquatch Fest in WA, the energy they give is amazingly fun! About 2000 ppl standing with me agreed!

  • @Swishersweet9804 So did I. Though I working at the stage they where at. Lol

  • @Swishersweet9804 So did I. Though I working at the stage they where at. Lol

  • these guys are opening up for Umphreys McGee in C'bus on June 26. I guess I wont worry about getting there for the opening act.

  • @goindownthe1road Your loss...I just saw them live a couple nights ago and they killed. Such a high energy show, it was awesome.

  • The annoying ads are a small price to pay. Thanks for all the awesome vids, VEVO!

    HannahMinx said it best: YouTube>TV

  • Whoaaaa, why are all the top comments so negative? How can you be anything but happy listening to this?

  • @kumagorotan

i saw these guys at a music festival called splendor in the grass in australia, they were freaking amazing!

  • ahaha on one of the camera pans in front of the key board it says "Bitch i love you"....from their song hahaha awesome

  • This song is SO HYPE!!! It throws me off that his facial expressions are so mellow while he's rockin' out.

  • @ChuOnWax fuck you for saying hype. it will not catch on.

  • @thekingof7 Calm down, I meant HYPE, as in having a lot of energy and makes me wanna dance. I love this track. I play it at a lot of the BBoy events I spin for.

  • I have the coolest poster from there concert in Columbus, it's black joe lewis blowing out smoke and its in the shape of a girl.. its sick. I'm 14 and proud to be a BJL & The Honeybears fan. I hate all the crap my friends listen to.. :/

  • I'm happy somebody mentioned muting the ads and not looking at them. Ever since youtube started doing that I've always muted and looked away. I don't even know what they advertise. Probably the same dumb shit as the radio and tv. Praise Jesus for Black Joe Lewis!

  • see them live, and i will think the exact opposite.

  • This is my cousin I PROMISE TO GOD

  • damn, my brother just showed me this band and i have to admit, when i ask myself all the time why dont they make music like this anymore (before i found this) i wish i had known about this sooner. its amazing!

  • I just Love Love Love this band!!! I can't wait to see them June 4th in houston,tx

  • man this guy can't sing at all - is this a joke?

  • I don't listen to soul music or leave youtube comments (not that I have anything against either, I just don't particularly), but just wanted to say, this FUCKING OWNS

  • and here i fought music was dying with no hope..and i come across this.. people of the mother earth - WE HAVE HOPE!

  • @lov3jazz

I was just thinking that. I listen to the radio, and i dont mean very commercial because i feel im an intelligent person and not a clueless 14 year old anymore, but i've upgraded to something better which also has good debates...im digressing...Basically, there is a lot of good music out there, you have to look outside the radio and charts etc. I've discovered some great bands in the last two years. If you like this you'll prob like SoulJazz Orchestra!

  • Wow, this is a whole lot of amazing! Im glad they brought back some good oldschool style!

  • GOOOOD STUFFFF. These guys are cooking.

  • Universal Music is a horrible label, they just don't get it! This song would have 5 or 6 times the amount of views if the controlling ancient record company Universal Music would stop restricting embeddable rights for BJL videos. They are treating this artist like he's a gold mine and if they allow embedded video on social networks and personal blogs then it must mean they are losing money somehow. Greedy corporate hacks have already destroyed the music industry. i guess they will never learn

  • nice sound. i will def look into more of these guys, despite an absolutely horrible video.

  • @ctown67 this song is amazing. heard it on satellite radio the other day and couldn't believe my ears. this is new??? raced in the house and found this video. painful. they look like a bunch of nervous high school kids during a lip sync contest. the lead singer is absolutely frozen.

  • Great! :)

  • Do my eyes see right? Does he actually have a stratocaster guitar neck attached to a telecaster body?

  • @maedusa Telecaster body, Stratocaster neck and Gibson style humbuckers o.o

  • @strangeroussss pretty cool

  • I give them an E for effort, but can't you guys see that this sucks? I mean really . Just search any James Brown, Sam and Dave, or Wilson Pickett live performance on You Tube. Sorry, this band doesn't even come close.

  • @joelok48 The E should have been for Edwin Starr. It's sad to see comments like yours. What a small world of music we would have if we only had a handful of legends. Did I miss some comments that said they were better than the legends you mentioned??

I personally think it's great to see someone breathing new life into soul at a moderately mainstream level instead of the overdone modern music in all genres.

  • @WanderlustX2 You make a good point. I agree that anyone trying to inject some soul into contemporary music can't be all bad. I'll give you this one. Are you familiar with a group called "The Mummies Are Coming?" This is my favorite "new soul" group. I'm going to see them live in Orlando April 7th. They've got some videos on YouTube you might be interested in.

  • @joelok48 No, but I'll check them out...can't pass on the name and soul. :) I'll check them out on here. I listen to just about everything but when I found these guys, I was excited.

I have a station, Radio Vietnam, that plays a lot of the 60's soul along with psych/hard rock/rock/pop/etc. from an era when it blended well.

  • @joelok48 I picked up their 2 CDs on Amazon and they're not all soul. I REALLY like Scandalous... Not sure of your background and if soul is the end all but I was surprised by the disc. It's a huge blend of what I love. There's tracks that are blues, Stevie Ray Vaughan rock-blues, Skynyrd southern rock, Percy Sledge and soul like Brown and Starr. The eclectic"ness" made it an awesome grab bag, at least for me. :)

  • is it just me....or is that dave chappelle on vocals? lol

  • @WhoMadeWho33 Glad I'm not the only one that saw the resemblance to Chappelle... The glasses make the drummer look like Andy Dick. :)

  • I need to buy this CD. Best song I've heard in years!

    *Bows to the band*

  • i love that bass

  • Muerte al Ska.This is pure FUNK !!

  • Someone has got to upload there song Boogie...I see a live version..but the studio recording is just....fuckin powerful..someone upload it!

  • I just wanna say, VEVO, you are the SPAWNS OF THE CAPITALIST DEVIL and it's not just that you'd sell your mother for a nickel, it's the fact that you put an ad featuring that Weenie Crooner Justin Bieber before a Black Joe Lewis video. Luckily for me, as soon as a heard that pre-pubescent whine instead of a soulful guitar riff, I muted the volume and looked at another website until it was over, so SHOVE IT UP YA BUTT, VEVO, I KNOW THE REPUBLICANS LEFT YOU PLENTY OF ROOM IN THERE. Have a nice day

  • @JamesHersh It's just mis-marketed ad, I think its funny because Bieber is going to die out in the next 2 months.

  • @JamesHersh Don't you also love how VEVO advertise vids that the 'uploader' has blocked from viewing in your country? But I'm in that same country you're advertising in dumb VEVO.... duh. Just as well other people post what you're looking for....

  • @JamesHersh Are you a retard ? This is not for politics dumbass ! Crazy talk from a lunatic !

  • @JamesHersh Yep, everything should be free. Don't worry that youtube loses money (like 200 million last year). They should just pay to let you listen to music. Entitlement is a condition you should look into.

  • @skuzzel Dude! You know a site where they pay people like me to listen to music!?!?! Hook me up, Brosef Stalin!!

    Sincerely,

A Patient Being Treated For An Entitlement Condition

P.S. Sorry if I offended you by insulting Justin Beiber; it just hurt so bad when he cut his glorious bangs, I was acting out.

  • @JamesHersh I don't really mind the Beibs, or the beibs hate. I just am sorta waiting for youtube to just shut down or remove all the illegal music. It won't suck too bad, but I sorta get aggravated at people who dislike vevo even though it's the only thing pushing back the inevitable.

  • @JamesHersh

Actually media is controlled by the Democrats largely(including Commercial Internet)

The Republicans control the Oil, and Arms industry.

Both of course work for elitist bankers that are pushing for a socialist/fascist movement by gradually introducing socialism into the US and blaming its fallout on Capitalism (which we have not had since 1913)

    Remember the planks of marxism?

Think about it, Capital/Social-ist hybrid = Fascist

Vote Ron Paul 2012! Because Freedom doesn't suck! :D

  • @MrWfntn

    Nor does knowledge.

Republicans are Fascist! NOT Capitalist! (mostly)

Democrats are Socialist, definitely not capitalist (mostly)

If we were capitalist weed would be legal, because state controls over goods is anti-capitalist.

Medicine would be cheaper because restrictions would be removed and local production legalized.

Farmers would be localized and possibly family based again.

To many confuse modern US Fascism with Capitalism... that is dangerous.

  • @JamesHersh Looks like someone is too immature to sit through a thirty second ad. If you can't handle capitalism, go to Communist China. Doesn't make a difference to us.

  • @JamesHersh Best FU rant ever on Youtube. Kudos!

  • my dad kept playing this so i finally decided to look it up

  • seriously, this is PURE soul, no where near ska

  • @PEPESKATES619

for what its worth, the horns have a very similar demeanour to those frequently used in ska.............got more of a northern soul feel to this tho!

  • I love ska, but this is not ska. Not even close. My friend saw this group with Passion Pit and turned me on to them. Really diggin' the soul.

  • This is how pathetic music has become these days. People confuse "ska" with soul music, and acts like kesha and bieber rake in the dough. I hate to sound like a geezer, but kids these days are retarded and listen to crap.

  • @ppryan being a 'kid these days', i can personally testify to the fact that what me and my friends listen to is total crap compared to anything these guys can just spew out.

  • @ppryan not all kids there is still hope

  • @ppryan kids have always listened to crap music. every generation is a lost generation

  • @ppryan Fuck you asshole, discriminating piece of retarded shit. You're as worse as a KKK member, thinking every youngster is the same. Go die in a hole, pathetic faggot.

  • @ppryan That's pretty idiotic. These songs and ska have a lot in common. Ska is part of the counterculture that strongly opposes Gaga and Bieber. You're welcome to be a geezer, but you shouldn't be ignorant.

  • @kokorikid13 Outside of having a basic rock set backed by a horn section, they have little in common. Ska is very heavily influenced by reggae and other music from jamaica, where as this is straight up rhythm and blues. Cultural aspects aside, anyone with a basic understanding of genres can tell this apart from ska. What ppryan said isn't ignorant. It's fact. What's next? Arcade Fire is just like Vivaldi because they both use violins? Give me a break. Playing dumb is worse than ignorant.

  • @4TrojanFan2010 But no one said it was ska. I'm merely pointing out the similarities, in the same way you just did. How many genres have rock with horns? few. Not to mention, most 3rd wave ska bands have almost completely discarded the Jamaican influence. Stuff like streetlight manifesto is practically Punk with horns. Learn what you're talking about before you call other people dumb.

  • @kokorikid13 Sorry, kokorikid13, but you must have missed the original post that I was first responding to. Yes, a couple of people commented that this was ska, which it clearly is not.

  • @ppryan agreed, but these guys are good. and not everyone is really into music, some ppl are passive listeners who just browse on youtube and get mixed up. i dunno.

  • @fivegirlsonevase Agreed. This is really, really good music. I guess my original post was a bit ambiguous. I was trying to get the point across that a lot of music is so bad these days that some people don't even recognize basic genres. Fortunately, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears is a great band with actual talent.

  • @ppryan It's ok, I think most of us realize it too. If you look at their sales, they represent so few people. Music has become more fragmented, there is no huge movement right now. Perhaps that's a good thing because individuality is retained. If you look back at great music decades like the 90s or 70s or 60s, music just went to hell because it became increasingly more mainstreamed.

  • @ppryan jeez, they must've got better because they kicked some ass just now on Letterman

  • @obtuse100 I think Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears are great, and it's a shame they don't get more publicity.

I guess my original post is a little ambiguous. I was responding to one of the first posts here where somebody said that this was "a great ska band." My point was that, No, this is not ska, and that garbage acts like Beiber and Kesha are so mainstream that the new generation of music listeners can't tell that this is not ska, and probably don't even know what true ska is.

  • @ppryan I would just like to inform you that i am 16, and i couldn't agree more that kids these days listen to nothing but the radio and that beiber crap, but i am proud to say that i do listen to REAL music! And there are, tho very few, teens that still listen to the good stuff! :)

  • @ppryan You don't know shit.

  • Saw them with Passion Pit. This band rules.

  • Very good music.

James Brown meets The Meters meets Van Morrisson with a little more touch of Mississippi Blues...

    Very good for the soul
