@kittystolemycookie94 Chicago ran on Broadway from June 75 to August 77. Liza played for one month, replacing Gwen Verdon, near the end of the run -- say, early in 77. DInah Shore's show "Dinah and Friends" ran 1974-80. I'm guessing this "reunion" is 78 or 79.
@paradox56533 The dark haired woman in white is Chita Rivera, who starred in the original production of Chicago. The blonde woman glimpsed at the tail end is the show's host, Dinah Shore -- popular singer of the 40s and 50s and TV host in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.
LOL the part where Chit almost puts her arm around him, but then realizes she has to sing into the mic. And the little flubb at the end, but it still sounded fantastic.
@Kasbahkabaret originally Bob Fosse was going to make Chicago with Liza as Thelma and Madonna as Roxie but he died before they could start filming so it was put on hold

Hey know your history . . . .All the legends together . . .It's sad that all we have today are knock off's of amazing people . Sure today you find many talented stars but not of that magnitude .
All I had to do was scroll down a little, first I saw a comment acussing Liza and Chita of "copying glee" and then another which asked which one Liza is! What has happened to the world! Kander and Ebb wrote this song long before Lea Michelle was even born. The ignorance of some people is astounding.
@QuesitonsAreCool No, they don't. You just have a few idiots here and there; I've been informed about a number of Musicals and plays THROUGH Glee. So nice try, but nope.
is this video about glee? no. so why are half the comments about it?
this is stupid.
glee is a great show that many people watch and enjoy. its not an insult to do a cover, it a compliment. no one is saying that the glee version and if they are then let them have an opinion. people who disagree can have their own. im so sick of reading stupid comments on videos for songs that glee has covered. let them be and enjoy what you're watching.
I love how people think that Glee did this song before so many people when when in reality, this cover and many others are about 30 years old and that glee's version really sucks
@Elach86 really bitch...... REALLY! do you have any idea how old this video is first of all. second of all Liza was around WAY FUCKING LONGER then those bitches on glee. You are so ignorant.
@Elach86 Glee is so NEW! How old are you exactly cuz only a 5 year would think Liza Manelli who is extremely OLD!! Would have copied glee you need to pay attention to idk what year it is at least. Sorry but it's insulting how ignorant you are. Nd glee is gayyyyyyy lol.
@Elach86 you know that thes "two old girls" are just legends? O.o and actually if you knew a little something about music you would know that GLEE copied the original version of chicago. Even if it was great. if you say GLEE WAS so much better, you're wrong and you say GLEE IS so much better . Even if it's not my opinion :)
@Elach86 wow your ignorance just floored me. do you know what year this was? 1975 you do the math. excuse me who copied who? I like Glee but please do not even compare them to these talented people in these video who are ALREADY LEGENDS. LIZA MINNELLI. CHITA RIVERA. JOHN KANDER. FRED EBB. DINAH SHORE.
AFAIK, Liza's incredible response to Chita Rivera's appearance onstage is a response to Chita's having been released from the hospital. Liza had replaced her onstage for the duration. Wiki says, under "Chicago," that Minnelli replaced Rivera while Rivera was ill.
As to Liza being depressed in her rendition of "Nowadays," the song is supposed to be depressed; it reflects the false cheer of the 30s, even though she'd been in prison.
@deloggio actually Liza replaced Gwen Verdon as Roxie Hart, She was the one who was hospitalized. Chita Rivera played Velma Kelly opposite Liza during Gwen's absence.
I think Liza was Just ecstatic and very happy cause she never thought chita would appear like that. It was a complete surprise to her.
I got to see them together in Chicago. I went into Manhattan to buy a suit for a school event, sat at a lunch counter at Korvette's with a friend, saw the article about Liza stepping in for a few weeks and raced to the then 46th Street Theater.
@randywong There are a few poorly lit cuts on You Tube of Liza in Chicago. Liza was fun and they did modify the choreography, especially Me and My Baby. Her version was like Eddie Cantor and it was fun. It was very strange though when Chita Rivera comes to the footlights in silhouette at the beginning of the show and the audience SCREAMED thinking she was Liza. It was rude when the applause died.
I love her voice, and her (even if she DID cancel yet another performance last Friday) but a) she sings this oblivious to the meaning of the lyric and kept trying to sing when she no longer had or was offered the mic. She should have let Chita finish the song.
Saw Liza a year ago in BC and she had to have given the best show of her entire career. Been watching her 40 years and she was never better. Also just saw Diana Ross at Radio City and she tore it up! She's never, ever been better,
I love Liza (even if she DID cancel yet another performance last Friday) but a) she sings this oblivious to the meaning of the lyric and kept trying to sing when she no longer had or was offered the mic. She should have let Chita finish the song.
Saw Liza a year ago in BC and she had to have given the best show of her entire career. Been watching her 40 years and she was never better. Also just saw Diana Ross at Radio City and she tore it up - Ross more so, is at the tip top of her game!
Yes, I have always loved Liza, have seen her 8 or 9 times in person, from 1973 to 1999. I want to see her again so bad! She is touring, but not coming anywhere near me---hopefully she will again someday! I think this clip of the 'Dinah Shore' show is from about 1974? Does anyone know?
I saw Dinah Shore at the very end. It's a shame that we don't have the great variety shows on TV now to afford future viewers great moments like this.
This song totally embodies the 20s. It was between two awful, awful times (victorian/edwardian and the great depression) but the it was like a party. Just an amazing, fabulous time.
I don't know about you all, but I fell hopelessly in love with Liza the first time I saw her, and the feeling has never changed. She seems so "transparent" even if that "transparency" is an act. She seems so spontaneous and I love her for that.
She how she reacts when her Mom comes signing onto the set.
@ceknights10 I agree with you completely about how wonderful Liza is...whenever I feel down, I play anything by Liza, and all is better in the world.
BUT I must point out--that is not her mother....her mother is the one and only Judy Garland. That woman was not Judy Garland, but Chita Rivera, who was also in Chicago years ago. No harm done! :)
@ceknights10 AFAIK, Liza's incredible response to Chita Rivera's appearance onstage is a response to Chita's having been released from the hospital. Liza had replaced her onstage for the duration. Wiki says, under "Chicago," that Minnelli replaced Rivera while Rivera was ill.

Chita Rivera and Liza Minnelli were two of Broadway's greatest stars in their day. I was in an NYC restaurant at the time of this video, and when Chita walked in, the entire room burst into loud applause...it was like a scene from a film!!
well in the 70's she was one of the biggest stars of the time. She saved Chicago when you took over the roll of Roxie Hart when Gwen got sick. She learned the role in less then 6 weeks and the rest id history Liza we love you
I think LIZA IS amazING!!! Is it me or does it seem like she picked up where her mom left off and just took it even further? I love her mom but now I am loving her too! it's amazing!
Its only my personall opinion of course but at the beginning she looks like she really needs to go to the toilet or somethink :D but i'm not critising her talent :)
At first I was staring at Liza's beautiful eyes as she was singing this song and thinking "wow, this is incredible". Then Chita pops out and I'm thinking "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!"
@MissusFingerBottom I saw West End perfomance 1 month ago and I totally and completely agree! It is grand show, great music, great actors and great band. Love it
When a throat infection sidelined Gwen Verdon from the original production of "Chicago"), Kander and Ebb asked Liza Minnelli to play the role of Roxy Hart opposite Chita Rivera who was playing Velma Kelley. Liza agreed on the condition that there be no announcement in the press and that Gwen Verdon's name remain on the marquee. She had all of one week to learn the music and the choreography (by Bob Fosse no less!) making way for a 5-week phenomenal run at the 46th Theater on Broadway.
@thesideshowfreak Thanks for this info on how graciously Liza handled the circumstances of her stepping in for Gwen Verdon. Makes me love Liza even more than ever!
goddammit!!! what i wouldn't give to sit in a living room with Kander and Ebb and Liza and Chita and Fosse and Bebe and Ann and just play and sing and have cocktails and get the barefoot contessa to make us some nibbles and just have the time of our lives!!!
goddammit!!! what i wouldn't give to sit in a living room with Kander and Ebb and Liza and Chita and Fosse and Bebe and Ann and just play and sing and have cocktails and get the barefoot contessa to make us some nibbles and just have the time of our lives!!!
Chita Rivera is not hogging the mike. Chita is holding the mike in a position where she can continue singing the song, and have all of it heard, instead of having the lyrics drowned out by the overflowing emotion, hugging and kissing. At the end, when Liza is ready to resume singing, Chita has no problem sharing the mike with her. All these people are pros. They not only had a huge hit show running on Broadway with "Chicago", but they all obviously loved working with each other.
Actually, in its first incarnation on Broadway "Chicago" was not a huge hit. I don't believe it recouped its investment. I saw the final performance in 1975. Liza was filling in for Gwen, who was ill. Liza and Chita were great. The show was considered too unsentimental at the time. The huge hit was "A Chorus Line."
"Chicago" was a pretty big hit in 1975. I don't know if it recouped its investment, but it ran quite awhile and some of the songs became famous, especially "All That Jazz". It was overshadowed by "A Chorus Line" at the time. The 1998 revival is a huge triumph. This revival is now the 6th longest-running show in Broadway history, and it has spawned an Academy Award winning movie. However, even in 1975, the show was successful enough so that all the participants were happy with it.
I have a sense of humor, but fag is a bit too much for me, considering I m very sensitive on that subject. Everyone seems to think I'm gay but I'm not and they treat me horribly. And I don't have a stick up my ass.
@BetteDavisMimic I believe I have become a theater fag. Between the tears and goosebumps I have to say after this I'm a mess........I just have to watch it again!!!
What a voice and delivery Liza has... Genes.

Howdybub9 2 years ago 2
Actually, in its first incarnation on Broadway "Chicago" was not a huge hit. I don't believe it recouped its investment. I saw the final performance in 1975. Liza was filling in for Gwen, who was ill. Liza and Chita were great. The show was considered too unsentimental at the time. The huge hit was "A Chorus Line."
olearytko 1 year ago
"Chicago" was a pretty big hit in 1975. I don't know if it recouped its investment, but it ran quite awhile and some of the songs became famous, especially "All That Jazz". It was overshadowed by "A Chorus Line" at the time. The 1998 revival is a huge triumph. This revival is now the 6th longest-running show in Broadway history, and it has spawned an Academy Award winning movie. However, even in 1975, the show was successful enough so that all the participants were happy with it.

Did liza do many films? I think I only saw her in Cabaret and Arthur.

yeah....but most theater people have a sense of humor.....i suggest you get two...one for you and one for the stick up your ass!!!!
BetteDavisMimic 1 year ago
I have a sense of humor, but fag is a bit too much for me, considering I m very sensitive on that subject. Everyone seems to think I'm gay but I'm not and they treat me horribly. And I don't have a stick up my ass.
