This was the first Clash song I fell in love with... I still remember where I was the first time I heard it on the radio. I was sitting in my parent's backyard after cutting the lawn. I heard that amazing opening guitar riff and was hooked instantly!!!
I dont understand, the only way to find this video is to look it up, why would you dislike it? It makes no sense to me, i just cant fathom the idea of it
Remember when musicians both wrote their own music and played instruments? Rolling Stone had the Clash on the 1989 cover "The Only Band That Mattered" for the 80's.
I heard this song after breaking up with the first love of my life. Thirty-four years later we are getting married. Might have this played during the reception.
I'm 15 years old and proud to say my Generation's Music is terrible. Long Live the Classics, My favorites- The Police, The Cure, Billy Idol, ACDC, The Clash, B-52's, Beastie Boys, Rush, Pink Floyd, Twisted Sister, Guns N Roses, and many more. Long Live the Classic Rock :)
@BlackOpsDrop I agree. Im 11 and fricking appaled by bands on the radio. Justin beiber sucks lady gaga sucks as does every other hip hop band. LONG LIVE PUNK ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the documentary on joe strummer on the sundance channel was so good. hard to find good shows like that on tv.
i lost a lot of respect for the clash when i became aware of all their politics.it should have been about music and fun which is not a dime a dozen like politics.
when this was out it was music for white boys who were neither jocks nor druggies. i don't know if drug abuse caused joe strummer to have a heart attack he does not look like the druggie type in this video.
@FugeesTheScore Your crazy I thought they were great but ill admit I have seen them perform this song better but Mick Jones short solo at the end was good
@havspeed You have to be the biggest idiot on youtube right now... this song rules... mick jones songs for the clash were awesome and YOU SIR are an idiot.
@havspeed how in the name of all that is right with the universe can anyone dislike this shit?????? This is the ONLY rock and roll that really fucking matters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rock music doesn't get much better than this- though some Clash purists might find this one overly sentimental compared to their more political stuff. I had the pleasure of seeing them twice in one week on their Australian tour, early 1982. No one ever wore a meaner bass than Paul :)
@GNRlast the beauty, and the power of the Clash is that they originally were a great punk band... politics, and dejection at full volume, but as they moved forward- they began to absorb different styles, and experiment with various "styles/sounds" dub, rockabilly, and most obviously pop. THIS song... the one that "broke" the Clash in Amerika is a "one-off"... not a bad song, but hardly a shinning example of what they were about/ stood for. 30+ years ago... and still the only band that matters.
@GNRlast ok, I bet you're a Ramones fan, well the Ramones according to the "punk" standard weren't punk but for some reason they are. Also a Ramone song is played at every sporting event, party and even made it to a super bowl commercial. I like the ramones as much as the next guy but the next time you say a tradition "punk" band isn't "punk" because they have a couple of "poppy" songs then you need to look at your favorite bands because have pop songs 2. Sorry that really grinded my gears lol
I'll admit when I first started listening to The Clash, I didn't like them at all. The entire London Calling record sounded like they were grinding stone together.
But it takes time and patience to hear how nifty their tunes really are, and I love them now.
Straight out of summer of 1980. The Clash and Ramones was my first exposure to Punk. People my age would most appreciate this music if we were 7-10 years older. Oh well, at least old enough to remember it when it was going on.
I just figured out why I love punk music. They are off key, out of time, and generally aren't good musicians, but they make you feel exactly what they want you to feel. Well done.
I grew up listening to this shit & loving it !! It's just a damn shame no one can begin to really come up with anything of this caliber of true punkdom anymore !!
@markinkc54 : No offense to you or The Ramones.. But I am certain Joe Strummer would have turned out to be the music God he is with or without The Ramones.
@Frotoad I'm saying this as a clash fan... the way they got started was by rehearsing a bunch of ramones songs together to get their feet.... get over it and stop with the pissing contests
IT ALL MAY LABELED AS PUNK, BUT THE CLASH IS ACTUALLY A GROUP OF PROPER MUSICIANS.THE RAMONES SHOULD BE COMPARED WITH SOMEONE ALONG THE LINES OF THE SEX PISTOLS.aLL PRETTY SIMPLE STRAIGHT FORWARD POWER CHORD GUITAR WORK .DEFINETLY NOTHING SIMPLE ABOUT THE CLASH.THAT MIX OF REGGAE ,SKA,PUNK,ROCK IS ALL SOMETHING THAT WILL MAKE IT SO WE NEVER HEAR A BAND LIKE THE CLASH AGAIN.
IS THEIR ANY MUSIC THAT HAS COME OUT LATELY THAT U KNOW THAT PEOPLE WILL BEING LISTENING TO 20-30 YEARS FROM NOW?
@Frotoad ...meh maybe, I mean him and the rest of the Clash climbed into a second story window just to meet the Ramones, I think the Clash's music would've differed very much...
@boi2613 How is that funny? Not to be rude, but The Clash are the most important Punk band ever to grace Rock and Roll. True this song is more pop and different than their other stuff, but that's what made them punk-doing what they felt and not giving a shit what the critics said.

I don't give a flying fuck about Jimmy Page's finger vomit either. Commenting on the Clash by comparing them to Led Zepplin??? Why don't we compare the Beatles to the Lawrence Welk Orchestra while we're at it.
@buddiechrist I do agree that songwriting is much more important than technical skill. I don't think that Led Zeppelin was overrated. I do love the clash. The argument started because some guy said that the Clash were better musicians and I felt I needed to correct him.
@coldplaysucks37 your right. led zeppelin were way better musicians. all 3 members that played an instrument are in the top 20 best of what ever instrument they played. the clash were better song writers but not amazing musicians. you guys all have to remember the clash was a PUNK band. they didnt really know how to play so their first 2 albums every song was 3 chords. and they taught themselves how to play and by the end they still wernt great. zepelin were better musicins. but not a beter band
I always loved The Clash as a young kid, but I have new found respect for Joe Strummer after watching the doc Let's Rock Again. He was truly a force of life.
@vansrok1 I mean, I'll try, but with Boxing Day landing around the same time, i just don't know if I'm gonna have enough time to mail them out this year.

@coldplaysucks37 - and who gives a shit about technical acumen? Led Zepplin was an over-bloated shitpile of hippy dreck. And it's hard to say which is more fucked out: their music, or their groupies.

The Clash's music will live to infinity and beyond. I dig many other genres out there but this fucking band and punk are my roots for life !!!
