Read some American history-- especially WWII history. This was the last time there was a mass draft in this country-- more than 60 years ago. This country would have fallen apart if the women hadn't stepped up and "done their part" by working in the munitions plants and aircraft plants and operating the city streetcars and working the farms, doing "man jobs" while the boys were away. In that war, you couldn't have kept some of the boys home and sent girls in their place.

Read some American history-- especially WWII history. This was the last time there was a mass draft in this country-- more than 60 years ago. This country would have fallen apart if the women hadn't stepped up and "done their part" by working in the munitions plants and aircraft plants and operating the city streetcars and working the farms, doing "man jobs" while the boys were away. In that war, you couldn't have kept some of the boys home and sent girls in their place.

You might say I agree with you regarding the selective service. Everyone between 18 and 25 should have a draft card. The US discontinued the draft in 1973, and draft registration is only a contingency plan. Requiring girls to register would ensure that the draft was never reinstated. Perhaps it would ensure that big wars-- of the kind where there is so much death that their aren't enough volunteers to feed the flames-- would never happen again.

I am especially aware of WWII history, as that was my father's war, whereas Vietnam was my first husband's war. And I agree that females should register for the draft if males register for the draft... it is moot, as the draft now is only a measure of the number of males 18-25 who are able-bodied, and adding females merely adds another factor into an equation that is mainly of interest between census-times.

While there may have been some ignorant fools who were disrespectful of returning soldiers, those I knew who opposed the war didn't blame the soldiers. Even within the hierarchy of the USAF, the enlisted man would have spat upon a full bird if he could get away with it. I was married to a sergeant in the USAF. The average Vietnam grunt was the 'fair game' of his superiors. The draftee was the person those who protested the war thought they were protecting... the men who were cannon fodder. I know people who suffer the effects of Agent Orange as well as PTSD.

Women that were suppressed from doing important jobs became the listeners, advisers and the thinkers of a creation.
