  • What's the game at 0:37? Just after shinobi and than the screen flips to a dude in a white hat punching blue caps :P

  • isn't there a Far East of Eden Ziria coming out for Xbox 360 and PS3 soon?

  • Johnny thanks so much for opening my eyes to the series! I absolutely love it. Im a student of Japanese for a few years now and because of your recommendation have decided to play-through it with my own translation. Its on my channel, and from what ive played its a danm good series. Im loving Tengai Makyou Zero!! Thanks!

  • Excellent review, well researched. Note that the NEO GEO title DID appear rarely in American Arcades! And it is indeed quite good - like a comedy take on Samurai Shodown / Last Blade! (Crossed with Ranma ish humor?) Never played the RPGs, but great character designs - you'd think it had been an Anime / Manga frist? Maybe Wee can get a Wii title someday?

  • hand animated live cartoons would be such a strain on the artists wrist

  • WOWOOWOWOWOOWOW O^O^O^O^_^_^^O_^O^

  • あー 何言っとるかわからん

    字幕字幕

  • the second game is actually called "tengai makyou MANJI maru"

  • when you mentioned oriental blue I think you said it was on the game boy advance its actually on the GBC.

  • Holy shit the graphics and animation are mind boggling.

  • had to come back and watch this vid because I just bought the complete FEoE Zero =]

  • Will you do a review of Final Fantasy series one day?

  • They should've add the X-box 360 remake of Ziria in this video.

  • Comment removed

  • I like the Hip hop song on your website you should put that on a video

  • man...and I thought to have alot of games...it's nothing compared to your collection!!

  • Very interesting review - a series I really don't know much about. One thing I would like to know though... Is this game easy to play for non-Japanese speaking and do you lose a lot of the story? Usually with a Jap-RPG exclusive, it's pretty much unplayable in English - is that true for the Far East of Eden series also?

  • What is the game in the top right during the split screen at 0:12-0:14? (Looks similar to Mercs,Rambo etc..)

  • Hmm... So that's what that is. I've always wandered why it was so popular in the pc-enging community and why people chose Kabuki as their screen names which leads me to something else.

Are you the Kabuki that runs the TurboGrafx Network?

  • I becha most people haven't heard of this series.

  • ill have to check if far east of eden zero was translated and search for the rom hehehe. it looks good

  • Tengai Makyou IV is on my list to fandub.

    :)

Great epic game gotta pick up the psp port.

  • You and your RPGs...at least I have a good excuse for never hearing about this one in particular. Good overview!

  • Wait. Some of the chars in this game got feature on a fighting game called "Kabuki klash", name by SNK(I think)

  • Yeah there is a Neo Geo fighting game called "Kabuki Klash" with some of the Far East of Eden characters in it. It was only released in Japan though, but the boxart is really cool =). The gameplay is solid, it should be since its a Samurai Shodown clone lol

  • funny, i played an english version of it, here in canada.

  • When Japanese Neo Geo games are put in an English console/arcade cabinet, the game automatically translates to English, so even if it was a Japanese exclusive, it would still translate.

  • Actually, and I'm going on some seriously dodgy knowledge here... but perhaps the name of the place is actually 'Zipang' which was... the name Marco Polo gave to Japan...?

  • how the hell does this guy make his living??

  • they should release a remake of one of the games on ds

  • There's a Far East of Eden on the xbox 360 as well. I think they're still planning on bring it over here?

  • it's been 3 years since it was released, it wont.

  • YerE I was waiting too.

  • Well, now you know why, lothrazar.

  • That was a very fun review but I think you sayed "It was really cool!" a little too much. keep up the good work though.

  • In the latest issue of Nintendo Power, I found out why the Tengai Makyou games are never going released here in the United States: RED Entertainment (the developers ) felt that we Americans would NEVER understand the Japanese culture that is used a whole lot in the game. That is the main reason why RED and Hudson never released this game series here in the United States.

  • cool

  • YerE RED always gives games an comedy-esque, anime-saturated aura, like in WOZZ and Knight R Daibouken both of which were not relesed in the states. What they don't see is that it isn't a bad thing, it's quite refreshing.

  • Yeah, well it is too bad that RED Entertainment is such a stubborn-ass game developer from Japan that NEVER wants to release any of their games here in the U.S.

  • I wonder if Atlus will eventually localize the ds or psp ones.... I say Atlus because this seems RIGHT up their alley.

But I guess that's wishful thinking.

  • If only I wasn't so lazy and out of money otherwise I would start importing some of these games for my Saturn. Welp, thats what I get for buying PDS. You should review that, best RPG of all time IMO, up there with Phantasy Star 4

  • So that's where Kabuki Clash came from. That was an awesome fighting game with a lot of personality. Now I know why.

  • Far east of eden is some serise hcg. With it's fictional take on history.Though the most i've played is 4th on the saturn and kabuki klash on the neo geo.

  • My mistake i ment to say the 5th title on the sega saturn.

  • how did you came in contact with the far east of eden series?

  • You guys should do a review on a obscure beat'em up series for the Super Famnicon called Rushing Beat. The three Rushing Beat game were lucky enough to get released in the U.S on the Super Nintendo. The Problem the game was heavily basterdrized things taken out, race change for a few of the characters and music was altered, the title of the three games were name changed to Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers, and Peace Keepers.

  • Can you read Japanese ? If not how do you play these games ?

  • "Far East of Eden" is the name of the fictional book written by the fictional author (P.H. Chada). I hope that Americans call it the "Tengai Makyou" series.

#1 was originally not on CD, but was later ported to the CD with no upgrades to the content... Just a change of medium.

Also, Ziria is pronounced "Gee-ry-ah" Tengai Makyou 2 is Manjimaru, not Maru. Oriental Blue is "Ao no Tengai," not Ano Tengai. It is actually awesome, and DOES live up to the series. A rom translation's in the works.

  • HI! I went to Japan pasr january and bought me F.E.E. Zero for super famicom; a long time ago I saw it on a mexican videogame magazine. Later I heard of the Saturn and PS2 ones but never did for ALL the you show, thanks!!!

I started learning japanese 2 years ago but still its not enough to understand the full story in the game. I did found Zero in akihabara, do you think the other ones may be there too?? thanks again

  • Wow...this is the first I've heard of this series. Looks pretty cool--it's a shame it was never released here.

  • what game is that on 0:22?

  • @hoboxjohn Kaze no Densetsu/Legend of Xanadu II for PC Engine.

  • I actually remember reading about the Saturn one in Gamefan... the write up specifically pointed out the revisionist American history, which sounded great, but they cited it as a reason the game would probably never release here as it would be either too ridiculous or somewhat offensive to American sensibilities. This makes me wish I could have enjoyed this whole series as well.

  • Wow I had no idea it was an RPG series all I knew about this was Kabuki Klash the fighting game on Neo Geo which seemed to be a pretty cool fighter that I played a lot for... now that I know it's an rpg makes things feel more interesting... seems very much more like a Dragon Quest style. Still cool though thanks for sharing HappyConsoleGamer.

  • you are very lucky to have been able to play those games. my buddy and i went to Japanese classes so we could import games, back in high school but like with french nothing stuck.

  • i love your videos so much. ive watched everyone and ill watch every new one.

What do you think about Banjo Kazooie/tooie?

  • this looked really cool...I think I'll try 2 look into this series, looks gr8 :D

Kabuki kind off reminded me of Kamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (an anime) :D

  • KABUKI GENJURO ICHI BAN!!!! ^_^

  • What a cool looking series of games! I had never even heard of them before! So how do you play them if they are all in Japanese? Are there any translated versions on the net? Cheers ;o)

  • Got alot of Kabuki Den videos, and almost beat it, losing my save data by hitting that language barrier navigating around the Duo-R's storage and accidently formatting the memory storage when trying to reset my high score on one of my PCE shooters.

  • excalibunny there are translations on Gamefaqs for all the games.

  • @HappyConsoleGamer so when u played the games u sat there with a script?

  • Where can I get the script of these games in English. I would be willing to import the psp version of the first 3 if I can get the scripts. Can someone help me with this?

Is this what you use Happyconsolegamer? Or do you just rough it?

  • I love the book Far East of Eden!

  • i own ziria, manjimaru and 4th apocalypse. i was lucky enough to do so when i was living in Korea at the time. i believe manjimaru came out when i was in 4th grade or so.

i never finished them because of my inexperience in RPG gaming but i went back and started beating them backwards lol. currently working on Manjimaru. i really would like to try the remakes and Namida though

  • PeteDorr was right about you, your vids are great!

  • Oh, there we go. I tried posting twice before and the damn thing wouldn't let me. Anyway, I've not heard much about this title till now. Apocalypse on Saturn looked particularly interesting, both in theme and presentation. I would have certainly loved the opportunity to have played that one. Thanks alot Bernie. Moving on, it seems that rather random Japanese titles are making their way to North America as of late. Perhaps we should all head out to the Atlus forums and make some noise.

  • .....

  • Try Dragon Quest 8 if you really liked 4

  • I have not gotten to play this, but it seems really cool, I have heard of this series!

  • Very nice review of the series! Definitely going to have to pick up the first three for the Turbo Duo. :)

  • nice research, bro. i did not know this game much! but have played the kabuki klash on my PSP.

  • are you ignoring the Kabuki Klash spinoff for NEO*GEO?

  • oops disregard that

  • this my sound stupid but wasnt there a book,or somthing too?

  • Can someone tell me what that game is at 0:22

  • Legend of Xanadu

  • awesome series overview

I remember reading about the Saturn version back in GameFan magazine and thinking the battles looked amazing, and the pseudo-American setting sounded totally whacked :)

  • Great video. I actually have the PC-FX game of FEoE.

  • Lucky you. That is one of the rarest PC-FX games.

  • I was considering putting game footage on Youtube. I don't have any game capturing devices though.

  • Just get a Dazzle DVD Recorder, VCR, blank VHS tape and you are all set. That is how I am going to do it once I get my new computer.

  • Can that interface with a PCFX? In case you're wondering, I have several other PCFX game too.

  • First record the game on a blank tape, then plug the VCR AVs into the Dazzle. You should see what your recorded on your computer.

  • ok sounds good. If I can get my hands on a dazzle. How about a gamebridge? I heard armake21 suggest using that to capture game footage. I'm sorta new with this.

  • kool

  • WOW! VERY awesome episode!! very thurough and

informative retrospective about the series!!! I have tried a few times to sit down and play part 2 and 3 but without a guide, I had no idea what I was doing. LOL.

Kabuki does indeed rule!! Once again, friggin great episode!!!

  • i love to collect all sorts of games myself, but surely if you cannot read japanese then whats the point!!! unless you can read japanese of course lol. i have looked at getting this game before for the pc-fx/pcengine duo etc, never did tho

  • i like how they did the american setting in the 5th game, the japanese love european settings alot, so im not surprised if they did different cities and countries

  • I remember the arcade game!...I was playing that game every sunday xD

  • they should rre-release them on the wii network or onxbox live and play station network. because it seems that its something that should be broght to the US and canada.

  • Chicago

Wow thats cool that they put Chicago in the game.

    Great job 5/5 stars

  • Another great vid' mate.

Just out of intrest which is your favorite console? I am assuming maybe the MASTER SYSTEM as I know how much you love Phantasy Star.

  • ya, it's to bad they didn't come to the states, i would check it out

  • you should do a review on the kingdom hearts series

  • Why? I bet there are over a million KH vids here already.

  • Cool stuff!

  • ...thanks for explaining the plot....

  • say make a petition to bring the game to the usa

  • Kool now I know all about it.

I want to check out that Neo fighting one.

Looks great in HD as always.

  • cheers man, love the show, keep up the good work!

  • another great biografy dude. =)

  • I own the second one myaelf!

Has there been any fan translations ever?

    Also can you read Japanese?

  • I wish people would wake up, or I assume Kanji is much harder to translate in English than Katakana and Hiragana.

  • Wow, "Far East Of Eden" Very Clever title.

    I.E."Forest of Eden"

  • What a shame,these games look awesome.

  • 0:30

    What game is that?

    And great review thanks xD

  • It's cool that you have the games but do you know Japanese as well? It would be torture playing them and not knowing what's going on.

  • GameFAQs has translations and walkthroughs for all of the FEoE games.

  • Kabuki class looks cool, I love neo geo fighting games. I think I would have trouple playing the rpg's seeing as how I can't read japanese.

  • as alway another kick ass review and a great series too love those games own most of them and i actually still have that copy of egm too lol keep up the good work !!!!!

  • Man i HATE it that i cant play jap rpg's. Im a big rpg fan and i have all fareast of eden games and alot more jap only games, but i cant play them, and its frustrating as hell. But as allways a good video from HCG, keep em coming.

  • i see boxed dragon warriors in the background!

  • Wow, those games look like a lot of fun... unfortunately, all the text is in japanese. The best part of an RPG is its story and without it... eh, maybe they're a fandub out there. Thanks for the info!

  • Nice review.

That Sega Saturn version one interests me, with the fictional American-esque setting and the hand animated combat system. I might check this one out someday, emulator or otherwise.

  • long live Jipang

  • Loved the video man! Can't wait to see your video on Dragon Quest 5.

  • Great video. One can really feel the passion you have for your hobby.

  • wow never knew about this series. The one on sega saturn looks awesome! the battles really look unique and fun...makes me want to import the PSP version. Thanks for sharing this with us.

  • I really enjoy his videos. His charisma makes it so entertaining to watch.

  • wow im suprised that ive never heard of this series! dam i seen that psp collection last time i was back in japan and yes im kicking my own ass right now for not picking it up! but speaking of medieval japanese themed games do you like the ganbare goemon series aka mystical ninja? but as always great review!

  • umm, the Super Famicom wasn't out in Japan until 1990. it's RPG competition at the time consisted of FF2(jp), Phantasy star 2, and dragon quest 3.

  • awesome reivew man! thanks!! =)

  • this is the main reason im learning japanese to play all the great rpgs they get that we miss out on

  • Same here. It's sad that most of these games don't come out here, but at least they give us a reason to learn another language.

  • What do you use for video editing and like intro making. Also do you speak japanese?

  • This was such a cool video, I have never heard of this series. One question though, if all the games are in japanese, how the heck were you able to play them!? Did you have translation guides handy?

  • I love your vids, but I would love to see more shooters.

  • He can do what he wants

  • Yeah awsome video's! I should start adding them to gametrailers... very very good! But can you read japanese? JRPG are impossibel if you understand japanese...

  • No they are not impossible. If you played enough RPGs, you can easily break the language barrier. Also GameFAQs helps.

  • Hey man, i really appreciate you putting all this hard work in your videos, makes them really awesome to watch. Hope you get super famous soon. Best of luck to you and thanks for the awesome review. Whenever your video pops up at the front page i always get a smile on my face, cuz i know its gonna be awesome!

  • hey man quick question you know how to read Kanji japanese writing?

  • cool never knew :D thanks for informing xD

why didnt u get the ps2 one

  • I believe I've heard of this before. Looks pretty cool- especially the animation.

  • Yeah it is crazy how obscure this series is in the west when it pretty much started the trend of cinematic CD RPGs. We missed out on a big gaming milestone.

  • Kanji is the English equlivant of Japanese languages as in there's several different characters that mean the same thing, so it's quite confusing unless you're pretty savvy.

  • I think NEC and Hudson was very stupid to not release these games in English. They could have made the TG-16/Turbo Duo gain some popularity in our neck of the woods.

  • I like the new video collection for this episode's themesong. I don't know why, but I find that these video clips fit the music extremely well. Good job, my fellow canadian.

  • as expected, informative gaming, brilliant, thanks man.

  • I remember reading about the series in some game mag's a long time ago, any particular reason they weren't released? I like the look of some of them

  • NEC and Hudson probably felt they were "too Japanese" for us.

  • Yeah, I got that feeling after seeing some of the game footage

  • great job once again

  • Superb video as always. :)

  • cool..XD iv never herd of far east of eden.

it kind of looks like a dragon quest..

    looks good =)

  • I <3 your videos they're so informative. I always learn something new. Great Job

  • looks epic :0

  • Great vid! These games look very interesting, too bad I dont know japanese...I have played Kabuki Clash though that games awesome

  • There are translations and walkthroughs for all of those games on GameFAQs.

  • that whole wall of video game stuff makes me so jealous

  • I don't think it came out in the PAL region either. I could be wrong though

  • nice.

  • nice
