I've been a NRPS fan for 35+ years - and never once have I been able to listen to them w/out tapping my feet. Buddy Cage is amazing. cheers to them for all the years of musical happiness they brought to me.

Thanks for posting! Saw the New Riders with the Dead in 1971....first time for both. They opened for the Dead...they had these outrageous cowboy glitter suits that just added to that "high" lonesome sound. Saw them again, 3 nights later in Worcester, MA. (Clark)...even better....just a few hundred lucky souls with plenty of beer for all...those were the days...
I think the 1st time I saw the riders was in 70 or 71 when they opened up for the dead at roosevelt stadium in NJ. What a great show! Mary lou especially sticks out in my mind! They were really wailing! The new Riders were always a great band to see live! This brings back alot of great memories from those legendary times for sure! Thanks for this video! Peace to you !
@MrSharkey11 I saw them in Albuquerque in the late 70's w/Charlie Daniels and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band . What a great concert !! I don't recall hearing them sing this song though ( maybe I was just to FU'd at the time.. lol ). It is however one of my favorite Ricky Nelson songs.
Someone had a version of NRPS's "Red hot women and ice cold beer" on youtube. It has been deleted. If anyone has this, please post it. It's a great tune!!
@skanny1 I was so enthralled with Buddy Cage's pedal steel playing in 1972,73 that I bought around 4 of their LP's though the songs and lyrics in most of the songs were just the other four pissant college boys pretending to be Marijuana Cowboys.
@longlivejerryg Why "unqualified"? I bought music that I enjoyed. You were not born then but even if you were, if I had asked you to pay for my record LP and then make a remark, you could call it "unqualified".Since I paid in hard cash your opinion is "nice" but unqualified for sure.
you bought four records, he? Wow. You see we actually bought their records and went to see them in concert and I can assure you that you will never ever meet a person who saw them in concert that would make such a derogatory remark about them, They were fucking phantastic musicians, all of them!
Good one. I was seeing them a lot back in those days and I always liked the way they did this, even though I was never a huge David Torbert fan. I wish there were more NRPS videos with McDuke available.
I saw New Riders back in '72...same year this video is from, and remember thm as one of the best live bands I've ever seen. This video servs up some amazing pedal steel from Buddy Cage, a real wizard on the insturment. Likely one of NRPS ' best performances and thankfully caught on video.RIP John Dawson and David torbert.
What I like about this version is how it brings out some of the urgency and joy of new love by upping the tempo, syncopating the lyrics, adding the lap-steel guitar, and throwing in the repeat of the first verse, with a slightly more ecstatic delivery, all while keeping the signposts of the original, the cowbell, the electric guitar riff, and the harmony.
@captainzorikh A very sharp take on what makes this version such a joy to listen to.
Too many people who barely know the New Riders just think of them as fun loving apostles of grass. But they had a feel for country and country music and their music has aged very well.
I love the video. I saw these guys late one night at an all day/night concert in 1971. I remember this song when they played it. Did anyone know who this band was before this? Big Brother and Holding Company, Janis Joplin sang with them.
These blokes go "round like a rissole !" (Hamburger meat pattie excluding a place called "Wendy's which have square ones !) Sorry- am slowly gettin' full as a state school hat rack ! (Bourboned up !) These blokes epitamise the REAL hayseed spirit of their country & are ambassadors.
They sure were fun-Great seeing the rock'en Dave Torbert singing & playing.
He's SF Peninsula All-Star homie.
My fave Spencer Dryden on drums & all of them-I used to go to little place in Menlo Park where Dawson & Garcia on peddle steel were trying out Johns songs. Then at The Matrix w.Lesh on bass & Heart on drums-Then NRPS w/Garcia & then Cage all over the SF Bay-David Nelson another Peninsula All-Star-This is a great flashback, Thanks!
i like Panama Red. But I think there all great. Also the Veneta OR. Live cd is also really great. they released it on cd i think in 2004. I got my copy off ebay.
That's one of my favorite Skip Battin songs; he's always been so underrated. Thanks for bringing his song up. He was great with the Byrds, Burritos, and solo also. Sadly, he's been gone a few years.
Buddy Cage and Sneaky Pete Kleinow RIP infinitely, 2 of the most talented, best ears, and new a generation of Pedal Steel which open and closed with NRPS and FBB. OMG what ecstasy. I've played guitar to long to say, and open E and D slide. Is it TOO hard to learn Pedal Steel w/o teacher, or w/teacher in Denver area ?? Thanks Buddy, Pete, et al.
" Without Music Life would be a mistake. " W.F.Nietzsche
Aspen, 72/73 Buddy let me sit next to him onstage at a small club called the Gallery. This was every night for about a week, such a great experience for me, a 23 year old steel player. The band was at their best and we got to know them, they even took us out to eat at a local Indian-cuisine restaurant. I'm now retired from playing, but IMHO Buddy is without question one of the top 2 or 3 steel men of all time. What incredible tone and originality in his playing, there are not words...
Great Balls Of Fire; Buddy at his very best; one of my favorite groups in music; wouldn't you expect him to run right off the neck of his steel; really fantastic playing. send us some more of NROPS.. Bernie
I will always love Cosmic Cowboy Music! NRPS still don't understand why your not in the Country Music Hall of Fame! I guess being a San Francisco Band doesn't help!
