Why build a Volleyball playing robot, Why not get friends?

People seem to think making robots that do very specific tasks is getting us closer to true AI. This is just complex software interfaced to sensors that check where the ball is & it's velocity and calculate the projectile motion. Then all it has to do is move the arm motors so it can slam the ball back. Now when they've figured out out the brain works, neuron for neuron and manage to recreate that then we should start shitting ourselves. In the mean time , this is just how the japanese have fun.

Its not a waste, since the robot can react to un-predictable movements, and it takes in a good amount of calculations to asses things, it can be a building block for more complicated things, such as a waiter, being able to navigate itself and have very good hand-eye co-ordination. It all ads up to the final goal of a " dumb AI " one that can only think within its parameters set,so cooking for example. Then eventualy a " smart AI " which will be the end of us, or put to use for war.We will die XD

The point is to push robotics further. some will use jogging, some will use volleyball, war, driving, singing, conversation, shopping, elderly care, limb replacement, paintball, surgery, clothing folder, cattle herding, etc. It doesn't matter what the robots are designed for it helps ALL robotics become more and more advanced.

Who knows, maybe a unicylce riding/juggling robot will lead to the biggest breakthrough in robotics. I don't care what they do, just keep pumping them out.
