started listening to jazz a few years ago I had the exact same impression! for a while I forced myself to listen to it bcuz I really wanted to find out what all the hype was about...... miles & coltrane were a little too out there then. I would recomend finding what sparked your interest in jazz..... maybe u really love the blues! i think thats what got me... check out "after hours" on youtube w/ dizzy sonny rollins and sonny stitt.... rollins comes in after dizzy... youll dig it :)
Rollins is a legend!! I have two spare tickers to see him live at a sold out concert on 20/11/10. For more information go to gumtree and type in sonny rollins tickets
Yes, Sonny is a great jazz icon who has soared and invented magnificently for decades. But his 'rock' was the beautiful Lucille, his wife of many years who took on the role of manager and producer of his records. She's passed on, but her legacy of involvement in the marriage and the music, is beyond words. A great lady with a great musician.
The so-called alien is Sonny's Wife- and she is rather cool- saw whole interview with her & Sonny.... she supports and Loves him- & that's what we all need!
finally i met sonny rollins after 16 yrs from first hearing him, i heard him in london for 2hrs, got to speak to him, he signed my ticket stub we chatted briefly, i touched the giant, i saw the master up close and i stood side by side for a photo.
thankyou sonny rollins, thou art great, thou art presenteth them all. i often believe that charlie parker sent him as someone to carry on the flame. my picture with rollins eerily shows a beam of light cross both me and rollins.

Well I have played sax all my life and I just don't get it, don't get me wrong... love jazz, love many artists, but when it comes to Sonny Rollins I must admit I feel like the little boy who cried out that the emperor has no clothes.. he leaves me stone cold. Kind of waiting for him to start playing... to me he seems to be in a perpetual warm-up mode and never really gets going. I guess it takes all types... still.... whatever turns you on...
I like the man, I admire his dedication, but I confess, I just don't understand the music. While I can take each instrument out of the whole and listen to the genius of it individually, when I listen to the band, I just don't like it. Miles Davis, especially later in life, sort of toned down his avant garde tendencies and made music that was more centrist, easier for a dummy like me to get, and I love him for that, but the early stuff just goes way over my head.
I must say man, this clip is a bit crazy. Alot of it down to bad recording. I find when a band is spitting out crazy stuff it's much more easy to appreciate it when you are there yourself. And if you dont like it,dont try to! Duke put it best: There are two types of music ; Good and Bad. Listen to what you like!
Jazz is for the most part musicians music, meaning it can be very difficult to understand, much like theoretical physics, your brain just doesn't automatically get it so if you study it and message your neurons it is likely you will start to acquire a taste for it. Our brains are very much adjusted to the sound of modern popular music, so this raw complex music can sound bad. I like all styles where the music is good, but thats subjective as well.
@LEROTHECAT How's it going by the way? Still a dummy who loves people for giving them something to use as an excuse to be a dummy? Really, I'm curious about where you stand about this now?
A true living legend, always striving for something new in his playing and never taking the easy way out pushing onwards and upwards with his improvising.
Many thanks for sharing this Jazzvideo guy, five stars and favourited.
Great job Brett. Sonny Rollins has always been one of my favorite sax men. It's amazing how one could take a sabbatical when the world thought he was at the top of his playing game.
Sonny's greatest value lies not in his ability as a sax player, but in his ability to teach those around him about life. He is "The Master" and could easily be a pompous individual, full of himself. Instead, he is one of the most humble, warm, and decent people I have ever met.
When asked what the most important thing is that I learned from Sonny Rollins, the answer is easy: HUMILITY. God Bless Sonny Rollins!

I know it's simplistic, but would it be wrong to call Rollins a perfect mix between Miles Davies and John Coltrane?

He is another kind of saxman than Coltrane/Brecker but he is the king.
The recordings 60-64 is remarkeble and "jazzvideoguy" have also made it possible to se the music from Denmark with NHÖP. He is so great Sonny Rollins.
