  • the man finally reconized, by kennedy center honories,Way over due,my fellow americans:

  • I know it's simplistic, but would it be wrong to call Rollins a perfect mix between Miles Davies and John Coltrane?

  • @LEROTHECAT

started listening to jazz a few years ago I had the exact same impression! for a while I forced myself to listen to it bcuz I really wanted to find out what all the hype was about...... miles & coltrane were a little too out there then. I would recomend finding what sparked your interest in jazz..... maybe u really love the blues! i think thats what got me... check out "after hours" on youtube w/ dizzy sonny rollins and sonny stitt.... rollins comes in after dizzy... youll dig it :)

  • Gadverdamme er zit een advertentie met een Nederlandse C-artiest voor!

  • Sonny Rollins was certainly my influence, truly a living legend ....!

Thank you for posting this clip JazzVideoGuy, always enjoy your stuff man .... Thanks!

    Peace ~

  • At 0:15 what's the song???? I Need it Please!!!!!

  • What´s the song in 0:15 ??? i need it please!!!!!

  • what the song in 0:13 ??? that one coll

  • 2:05 Did he say piano forte? That's a rather more formal phrase than most people use these days.

  • Thanks for making this sophisticated channel Friend, I'll check em all out.

    Step by step ;)

    P3AC3!

  • Yes, Sonny is a great jazz icon who has soared and invented magnificently for decades. But his 'rock' was the beautiful Lucille, his wife of many years who took on the role of manager and producer of his records. She's passed on, but her legacy of involvement in the marriage and the music, is beyond words. A great lady with a great musician.

  • The Naked City

  • i thought it would break the laws of the universe to hear the bridge played that fast.

    GODLY!!!!

  • The so-called alien is Sonny's Wife- and she is rather cool- saw whole interview with her & Sonny.... she supports and Loves him- & that's what we all need!

  • finally i met sonny rollins after 16 yrs from first hearing him, i heard him in london for 2hrs, got to speak to him, he signed my ticket stub we chatted briefly, i touched the giant, i saw the master up close and i stood side by side for a photo.

thankyou sonny rollins, thou art great, thou art presenteth them all. i often believe that charlie parker sent him as someone to carry on the flame. my picture with rollins eerily shows a beam of light cross both me and rollins.

  • sonny rollins is one of my greatest influences in music! i love his music and sound!

  • He lost me after about "66, but in those previous years he pretty much smoked everyone. NO ONE sat in with Sonny Rollins.

  • You can hear the humor, intensity, virtuosity, and boldness coming out of his horn all at once.

  • That's OK. The Universe thrives on diversity. That's why we have more than 1 saxophone player in the world. You go out and create your thing!

  • yeah i feel the same way ....

  • Why mess it up with a talking head and inane comments?

  • @chessNIC

JazzVideoGuy was kind enough to share with us some of his own precious videos and knowledge. Appreciate what he has done.

  • What the omg ALIEN is that in 2:45 ?

  • the picture at 0:36 is mirrored. :) saxes re set up so that your left hand is on top and the bottom keys are on the right =P

  • I am so grateful for this clip. Thanks!

He is another kind of saxman than Coltrane/Brecker but he is the king.

The recordings 60-64 is remarkeble and "jazzvideoguy" have also made it possible to se the music from Denmark with NHÖP. He is so great Sonny Rollins.

  • once i heard him speak i knew who he reminded me of, sammy davis jr

  • I get a Cramp just WATCHING the drummer and bassist at 3:30-3:50 RIP it UP.

  • I like the man, I admire his dedication, but I confess, I just don't understand the music. While I can take each instrument out of the whole and listen to the genius of it individually, when I listen to the band, I just don't like it. Miles Davis, especially later in life, sort of toned down his avant garde tendencies and made music that was more centrist, easier for a dummy like me to get, and I love him for that, but the early stuff just goes way over my head.

  • Don't give up too easily. Keep listening, try some Coltrane, some Monk. Charlie Parker.

  • I must say man, this clip is a bit crazy. Alot of it down to bad recording. I find when a band is spitting out crazy stuff it's much more easy to appreciate it when you are there yourself. And if you dont like it,dont try to! Duke put it best: There are two types of music ; Good and Bad. Listen to what you like!

  • or how miles puts it : pick what you like..you know...like food

  • @LEROTHECAT

Saxophone Colossus, accessible, one of the great albums ... of all time. One listen of this and you will be there man.

  • @LEROTHECAT try Cannonball Adderley ;-)

  • @LEROTHECAT

Jazz is for the most part musicians music, meaning it can be very difficult to understand, much like theoretical physics, your brain just doesn't automatically get it so if you study it and message your neurons it is likely you will start to acquire a taste for it. Our brains are very much adjusted to the sound of modern popular music, so this raw complex music can sound bad. I like all styles where the music is good, but thats subjective as well.

  • @LEROTHECAT How's it going by the way? Still a dummy who loves people for giving them something to use as an excuse to be a dummy? Really, I'm curious about where you stand about this now?

  • A true living legend, always striving for something new in his playing and never taking the easy way out pushing onwards and upwards with his improvising.

Many thanks for sharing this Jazzvideo guy, five stars and favourited.

  • Sonny said "two minutes on the bandstand, that's six months of practice". How about that one?

  • he lives in germantown,ny now

  • practicing under the bridge,, awsome.. such dedication, what an inspiration in person and sound

  • this probably my favorite record

  • whats the first song at 00:05?

  • Don't Stop The Carnival

  • Coolest pic at 01:00

  • Great job Brett. Sonny Rollins has always been one of my favorite sax men. It's amazing how one could take a sabbatical when the world thought he was at the top of his playing game.

    thanks,

    Bob Gaines

  • Type in search: Jazz is my religion

    Amsterdam, 1964.

    Kind regards Django.

  • I love Newk!

  • Thank you so much, Bret!

    Your stuff is always great!

  • who is the guitarist in the quartet who plays the bridge? i forgot. Jim hall isn't it?

  • yes, Jim Hall

  • yes thanks one of the best be bop hard bop guitarist... 4me

  • @bitrille Jim Hall for sure

  • Maybe then, he was sleeping under the bridge?

  • It was UNDER the Williamsburg Bridge....'cause the acoustics were better..Sonny, tell me if I'm wrong!!!

  • no, he played on top of the Bridge

  • and it was the Brooklyn Bridge

  • No. It was Williamsburg.

  • yeah my bust, Miles in his autobiography said he thought it was brooklyn

  • bret you are the man! so is sonny obviously

  • he almost sounds like sammy davis jr. when he talks lol

  • Sonny's greatest value lies not in his ability as a sax player, but in his ability to teach those around him about life. He is "The Master" and could easily be a pompous individual, full of himself. Instead, he is one of the most humble, warm, and decent people I have ever met.

When asked what the most important thing is that I learned from Sonny Rollins, the answer is easy: HUMILITY. God Bless Sonny Rollins!

  • Let's keep Jazz going! Sonny Rollins, Bobby Watson, et al! Keep it going!

  • I just came back from a sonny rollins concert, and all I have to say is wow.

  • Sonny is now the greatest living jazz musician & truly an international treasure. Everyone everywhere should mark his Carnegie 50th with a carnival

  • i like the mohawk

  • me mum's already kicked the bucket, long before this video was posted

  • This is beautiful, like your whole website! Bret, you are my generations Ralph Gleason...one of the few writers who isn't full of bull@#$*

  • Yeah man, thanks for posting this

  • Thanks Brett! Thanks for bringing these podcasts to the masses. Love the Pariah stuff from yesteryears.

  • sonny is god...without a doubt the greatest living improvisor

  • Sonny ain't God... but he taught God all of his hippest licks.

  • Yeah, I dont know if you were listening or not, but Sonny is God, you're wrong.

  • I mean, if Sonny isn't God, who do a worship at church.

  • so great to see sonny in action! thanks for posting this.
