@AngusWeissman well, that was the intention. Think about it man, super mario 3D land. 3. its referencing smb3 as well as the 3Ds. They also brought the Tanooki suit back from smb3, the made the Boomerang suit which could be a reference to the Hammer suit from smb3. All things point to 3! yay!

This song strikes me as a cross between Bob-Omb Battlefield from Super Mario 64, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii's Overworld theme.
Given that I love both of the above, this was a beautiful song for me to start the game with! Now it's stuck in my head, and I can't get it out...
