@SONGBiRD917 She doesn't always do it but when she does is because she wants to hear herself better. Because sometimes the music is too loud or there is too much noise in the place she's singing at so she can't really hear herself singing. And about shaking her hands i guess is just a way of expressing what she's singing and the song through corporal movement. Not so sure about that. Thanks for watching!

@SONGBiRD917 As ale5677 already mentioned, it's probably to hear herself better. I guess that those whistles come out so strong from the front of house speakers that she would hear them but the delay from it can be annoying for her to hear.

For example if you put a speaker far away and start talking into a mike and hear yourself with delay, you will have trouble pronouncing your words. To solve that you just hold your ear so you hear yourself better and not the delayed sound.

@ppdan Well actually a proper whistle is hard to hear unless your in total silence. When using the whistle register its also said that the singer provides very little effort into creating the tune therefor its also hard to understand what note you are making unless you have total focus and clarity. The commenter above probably uses a high falsetto or head voice to reach the whistle range which not only puts strain on the chords but also is easier to hear since the sound they are making is clear.

Brilliant! But it isn't true when the uploader writes that Mariah's use of whistle register sets her apart "from every other female artist in the music industry". Minnie Riperton used whistle notes and was able to enunciate very clearly in that register as well as sustain whistle notes very long. Georgia Brown, the woman with the widest vocal range (?), sings whole songs in that register. And most coloratura singers make use of the whistle register.

That's it nothing else. And not a lot of people knew about Minnie Riperton's use of this register and her music. Still today not many people know about her. And Georgia Brown is just a MESS...she can have as many octaves as she wants but she CAN'T properly use any of them. Her whistle register is PAINFUL to hear.

I'm sure Minnie Riperton was, and way, WAY before that, in the 50's, there was Yma Sumac, a sensation and superstar in her day, who had a very strong, clear, inhuman sounding whistle register. In fact her use of it still sounds the best to me, regardless of all the other pop and R&B stars using it as little flourish runs now. Yma sounded like birds in a jungle.
