  • john lee hooker wished he could have played like this

  • He sounds a bit like early John Lee Hooker.

  • @eldorado62 JLH was a big influence on him - I'm surprised they never had the chance to play together

RL and Woods' "acoustic stories" version of this song is plain haunting (as is JLH's original)

  • hes started hitting that good lick on them strings and started smileing!!,,lol,,it was feeling pretty good to him,,!!!

  • How can an amazing guitarist like this not be on the best 100 list??? What a fucking injustice. This man is so good and so original there are no words to describe it. He's the closest thing to guitar God...Thank you for everything Mr. Burnside!

  • @quovadis1952 ,,right on bro!!!,,hes picking the fuck out that guitar,,but you know most all the old time black folks could pick like that it just wasnt too many got world recognition just only around their community,,its dang good too see this good stuff!!!

  • this is the blues!

  • wut the tuneing he has his guitar in for all these songs

  • watch?v=K_DOnKJ232M&feature=related

  • Iggy Pop eat ya heart out...THIS is raw power.

  • he's the man, I love his style!

  • There are som resemblents here to Hobo blues by John Lee Hooker. But man, there both banging. Im more into R.L. Burnside now.

  • @Dressommer I was just about to say the same thing. I knew it sounded familiar

  • What's missing from modern blues is the pain and despair that fueled first generation blues as this. It can't be helped but this was the music of not knowing when you were going to eat again, of not having the money to buy a bag of chips. Blues is being done today by people who really don't know what want is and it shows. But that's just how it is today, I guess.

  • @Kirke182 totaly agree

  • I love this guy......He is the all-time great blues player....but if you count Stevie.....two different styles....but blues though....this is soooooo nice

  • @Raiderfn31

fuck stevie,, every thing he did was the same, a copycat wanna be hendrix,, he sucked,, blues my ass .....

  • and what he speaks about his wife?

    i don't anderstand.

  • Is this in open G?

  • @vatonaught yes, and it looks like he keeps a finger on the c, which he does in poor black mattie too

  • Drink a sixer, and listen to Burnside.

  • @innominehumanitas thanks. good insight

  • Excuse me if this is an ignorant comment, but isn't this practically the same as Hobo Blues?

  • burnside is a great one for sure. that riff sounds exactly like that in john lee hooker's "hobo blues"

  • Burnside was such a badass. Not the type of guy you mess with in a dank bar at 1:49am.

  • Certainly one of the BEST bluesman ever!

This guy will still sound amazing for centuries.

  • i love burnside. does anyone know if there are any cd's of his with acoustic guitar like this? i can't seem to find any.

  • If you go on Pandora and start an R.L. Burnside station you will find a lot of these songs and Pandora will give you the album the songs are from and where to buy them.

  • RL's best acoustic Album is titled "First Recordings". Incredible sound quality as well.

  • same here

  • blues is not a colour thing, its a life thing!

  • What a pity people have to be ignorant and bring colour into it...just enjoy the music!!!!!!

  • I agree the music is so beautiful that it should be respected, digested, and left to be shared..The music surpasses color and is more recognizable on a spiritual level...

  • A: Yes

Q: Is RL the baddest m-f'er of all time?

  • I think Lightnin' Hopkins gives old RL a run for his money when it comes to bein' the baddest mofo of all time. Other then that this song is hypnotic, Burnside at his best.

  • white man can play this shit..... maybe not sing and sound like that.... its weird how our voices are different like that.... its kool.

  • no coincidence!

  • All the strings were singing:)

  • no white man can play the blues like this

  • BET?

  • That's for sure!

  • "no white man can play the blues like this"

    -playtime618167

LOL! You should have probably warned Mr.Burnside of this *fact* before he chose to pick a white guy named Kenny Brown to tour with for multiple decades and whom he called his adopted son.

  • Yeah Kenny Brown is a hell of a slide player too!

  • whites can't do it.

  • imbecilic racist

  • I'm white. I just know my limitations. haha

  • I feel every note

  • I think the tuning is Open G but with a couple drop notes,

    Kinda like drop D

I might be wrong though, If you know im wrong please tell me.

  • its open g a little sharp...almost g#

  • I'm pretty sure it's the open G tuning raised a half step (which makes it open G#).

  • Absolutely Immense!!

  • ..smokin, that man is...

  • so good..just so damn good.

  • what tuning is he in?

  • sounds like open G(DGDGBE)or some variation of G

  • standard

  • Its not standard, its open G =)

  • john lee hooker uses epiphone sheraton for that good ol' blues sound.

  • Yeah because acoustics aren't the true sound of blues are they... sheesh.

Someone get this guy some Robert Johnson. Good ol blues sound my ass.

  • i do listen to robert johnson, blind willie mctell, skip james, blind lemon jefferson, son house and a lot of other blues artists.I was merely commenting on the comment above me at someones surprise at some one using an epiphone guitar.i play blues slide myself on an acoustic guitar.i like r.l.burnside i love the blues so your comment really is null and void my friend.

  • right man those guys are bluesmen,I listen to their music too.Specially blind willie johnson

  • Epiphone! :D

  • God bless R.L.

  • blues iam talkin about the godddam blues!

  • thanks for the vid,,rip rl

  • Blues master. All pay tribute.

  • This is more of what the world needs!

  • This video series is just great. The sound comes through well, the filming is clear and straightforward, etc.

    R.L. Burnside rules!

  • good song, but i love john lee hookers version better
