Have sung this song myself for 15 years in various ways. Could never come up with such improvisational creativity. Absolutely beautiful and truly swinging. Guys, please stop with the petty, immature and uninformed comments. You are all entitled to your own opinions, but I have to say, I cringe when people are not actually talking about the song or the artist, but using the platform to give "shout outs".
That pianist was wonderfully playing Dylan... When you are doing a gig usually we need to look from time to time at the clock in order to know how much time we have and how many tunes if any we can continue on before we are to take a break. Thanks whomever posted this video. Keep swingin eveyone!
Amazing, no one can compare, thanks for this. And the pianist & rhythm section were just fine. When you're doing a gig in a mortuary, you might be forgiven for looking at your watch, "dylan" (if that is your real name)).
Her next fix? Praise with one hand, gross insult with the other. Newby!
She looked at her watch because she was thinking about her next fix! Who cares? She delivers in spite of the odds against her...my all time favorite jazz vocalist!!!!!
@hombrequemiralaluna . . . European audiences are usually more staid . . .but this group is BEYOND staid . . . they DO look absolutely bored to death . . . .
Watch the version of body & soul on art ford's jazz party w/ a 2nd rate pianist who didn't know WHEN to make proper changes for body & soul as a ballad. He did his best to follow but she has ZERO patience for substandard performers. This is why i <3 her. She demanded the best of musicians, because she was a top vocalist. Host wanted to stop midsong, she waved him off cuz you never start a song & not finish. sleazebag pianist called her dollface. she ignored it. that's what makes a professional.
@dylanjohnston I think you ought to keep your stupid comments to yourself. Miss O'Day was far too much of a professional to diss any musician she played with and actually, I think you have stretched your crude imagination to see her looking at her watch...prick!
@priapus56 relax. i know she's a pro and you idolize her and she can do no wrong in your eyes, etc. etc., but look, i have all respect for her and her style, and i kind of thought it was fabulous that she checked her watch to see if she'd be home in time for dinner. and yes she's very professional and has no patience for sub-par musicians. and if you watch some of her live performance
s she berates the musicians on-mic-- not even setting it aside.

@dylanjohnston I noticed that immediately, showing that she had NO respect for the music at all, it was all just a cheap superficial prop for her to show her limited abilities and the audience shows how much they hate being there too, sad that many untalented vocalists, frustrated that they don't play an instrument well, do this attitude crap, sorry great song, but she sucked!
Limited abilities, untalented?Hit records for Gene Krupa,Stan Kenton,Classic recorded output for Norman Granz on Verve ,showstopping peformance at the Newport Jazz festival.Check out BBC jazz 625 video for bored jazz audiences.Attend any concert in any genre and you will see people who look bored.TV studios give out free tickets for performances so chances are they are not all genuine jazz fans.
@dylanjohnston The piano solo wasn't bad at all; not fantastic, but in was cookin' and yes, inspired. I didn't see her looking at her watch at all; don't know where you're coming from with that.
@dylanjohnston plus 1 -isn't she brilliant? I just read her autobiog "hard times hard times" - its a "collab" effort with one "George Eeeles" published in 1981, but its recognisably Anita (I thinks she was dyslexic? anyway, whatever - you can buy a second hand copy on Abebooks for pennies).
Isn't Youtube wonderful? Getting all this fantabulous stuff for free?

2:42 <--- How long is that freaking piano solo is goin to last!?
Tsukinokato 1 year ago
Interesting how she almost elides "Fill my heart with song" which to me is the most important line, but a masterly reading in any case.

The piano solo is not bad at all, but the audience is dreadful.
In my humble opinion, she wasn't digging the audience at all (and the audience wasn't digging her) and she was kind of bored.
Nevertheless, sublime, as always.

@dylanjohnston I disagree about the piano. I thought his solo and comping were excellent.
Looking at a watch and/or sipping water - that's what vocalists do during instrumental solos.
