I have taught in an inner-city magnet school for highly motivated kids in NJ for over 20 years. We have kids from Africa, Asia, South America, Europe (in addtition to the regular 'home-grown population), most of whom speak other languages. In one generation, they all speak with American accent, follow baseball, love the usual junk food like most kids and are American to the core in their values. Many are evangelical Christians. They almost all attend top-notch colleges. What's the problem, Newt?

Learning Spanish has helped my English, my concentration, and my information comprehension. Being bilingual or trilingual is a skill and a craft. Many of these "Ghetto language" speakers can speak English and Spanish, some better than others. Anyone who can communicate using two languages has my respect. American schools should put more of an emphasis on learning other languages PERIOD.

Being Hispanic and educated, I find nothing racist about what he said. There is nothing wrong with Spanish but if I were going to live in Spain, I feel like knowing Spanish would give me an advantage. The Democrats always complain about leveling the playing field. Teaching them English would level the playing field. It is sad when immigrants coming to the US are putting their kids through our education system that does not even compare to the education system in Mexico. Many students graduate high school without being proficient in English. What good does that do them? Those who know only a language which is not understood by the community as a whole (the US in this case) will only be able to communicate effectively with those limited numbers of people who also speak the language they know, but not the whole community. They will be isolated to a minority of outsiders, rather than interacting with the community at large. Larger communities are usually more prosperous.

Shakespeare-era English is closest to modern Hochdeutsch and of all languages I know, Spanish was the easiest to learn vs. Farsi, French and now Italian... German and English I have always known... I think German is the most beautiful language but I love others too...

I stil don't know why this is an issue. My mother tongue is Spanish. I learned English at school and at college, my mayor is foreign languages. Currently speak and write Italian and French. Also, on my way to learn German and very much inclined to learn Swedish. What I'm trying to say is that knowing other languages cannot hurt you at all. I' tired of people using "ghetto" to mean poor neighborhood. A ghetto is a place you can't freely move in and out of. Ghettoes keep getting more and more crowded because Power keeps shrinking the space. I stil don't know why this is an issue. My mother tongue is Spanish. I learned English at school and at college, my mayor is foreign languages. Currently speak and write Italian and French. Also, on my way to learn German and very much inclined to learn Swedish. What I'm trying to say is that knowing other languages cannot hurt you at all. i got told that at school....
a kid told me i was low class and ghetto because im mexican from detroit...
i am a smart girl with a 3.6 GPA,and i speak 3 languages as well....but,because i speak spanish and have an accent,eventho my sisters,my parents and i are all american born...i speak with an accent,i think its funny how "the land of the free,and the home of the brave" are trying to ban or belittle a language...and how they are afraid of us...its a damn shame

the only reason we're like this is because we're not exposed to as many foreign countries and those that we are we just block them out. if the u.s were located in europe we would probably be speaking about 3 different languages because other countries that have their own language are closer by. im hispainic and i want to learn japanese, i know a little bit a spainish but i people think im white cause i dont dress like a latina how ever they look, just shows prejudgment.

I am sick of bilingualism. There should be only two translations into Spanish" Where the border exit is or where you can get English lessons. Besides, the written stuff is useless, most of them are illiterate too.
