What they should have done is made a ball of duct tape slightly larger then the hole in the boat then wedged it in to stop the leak momentarily. Then scooped out the water and dried the area with their clothing to make a dry surface then covered the rest with more duct tape. That would have worked, right?

The kind of tape they used is extremely rigid and adhesive.

It can be used to repair a small leak in a pressured pipe without problems.
