True story: I came here to listen to this song because of Kanye West's song "Dark Fantasy." He samples a lot of beats and gets billed as a genius, so I wanted to listen to this song, see that he basically stole it, and dismiss him. What I hear instead is a completely different song. The only line he uses is "Can we get much higher" and his version is so completely different, so much BETTER, that it's not the same song. Kanye turned this simple song into a work of art. Shocked.
I listen to Kanye's 'version'. They are so different. All Kanye did was use the line "Can we get much higher". Well, I personally don't like dance music littered with filthy words, I like songs with meaning.
Born and raised listening to Mike Oldfield. Everyone who knows the Exorcist knows Mike. I appreciate Kanye for using his music! And especially something OTHER than Tubular Bells (Exorcist) Spread the good music!!! Kayne Just helped Mike out! Why hate? :)
@overbyjames EXACTLY!!!!! its so funny, usually the actual artist thats sampled, doesn't mind. I mean, if you made a song and years later was being rejuvenated, you will be flattered, like most of these artists from 60s all the way to now...... its funny how its the fans of those specific artists that go mad.
@MHarryMiller Ahah, do you even know who Mike Oldfield is? Do your homework before saying something like that, seriously. I do agree it was a excellent selection by kanye, but really? David Bowie wannabe shit?
I heard this before Dark Fantasy and was indifferent to it, but now that i heard the Kanye song, I think this song would be about 50x better if it had some piano behind it. This song just feels weak without the strong piano chord backing. Oldfield should re-do it with piano in my opinion...just saying.
@cmbuvi92 Yeah lol this song isn't very good.. Props to Kanye for managing to listen to it long enough to hear a part he could sample. It is painful to listen to lol
Really, Kanye took this song to a new level. I'm not saying that it's not a good song already, but he's got an ear for beats. He turned this into something nobody else could have.
@thatsrightisaidit909 He did not take the song to a new level. He took a tiny sample of a solid song to some other level that so many find amazing. If you want to hear music being taken to a new level, check out Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" or "Ommadawn". And that shit is from mid-70s. Cheers.
Okay, I can agree with you a little bit. The fact that Kanye used such a tiny sample of the song does put more of a separation between the two. It's such a small link between them. But I still have to say that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy WAS music being taken to another level. One of the best hip-hop albums in the last ten years, probably more (have to consider Mos Def, Common, & OutKast). It was absolutely gorgeous. But I will check those out. Thank you for the recommendation. :)
@thatsrightisaidit909 He didn't take any song to a new level.. He just made a song, and used 4 seconds from this one. That has nothing to do with changing this song. Sure, Dark Fantasy is great, but they are completely different songs.
@thatsrightisaidit909 You realize the comment I'm referring too is the TOP COMMENT. You really think I would have seen your own rethought out comment?
suspect lyrics, and now kanye (illuminati) is connected with oldfield (another who made a pact)
high places were places used for animal & human sacrifice, as well as rituals, prostitution and other fun stuff. The "gods" that were worshipped at the "high places" included Baal (Num. 22:41), among others.
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Eph 6:12
i wish ppl you stop complaining about hip-hop taking music... we know! its a part of the hip-hop culture, we do it to honor past artist while creating another sound
Loved this song since I got the original handed to me when I was a teenager,Beautiful song and melody haven't heard the kanye west version I hope he hasn't spoilt it"Rock on Live Long"=)?
i love how kanye sampled this but without copying the melody. it sounds like a totally different song except for that 'can we get much higher?' i hope this made sense lol. but you know, so many rappers/artists will sample a song *coughlupefiascocough* but instead of just using for their own, they basically just use that same beat, melody, rhythm, etc etc for their song.
@jamesfrancoswife95 yeah Kanye's samples are always really subtle, but really strong at the same time. The man's a genius of hip hop production, has been for a decade. It's not even fair to compare Lupe to him ;)
how the hell did kanye/rza (whichever chose the sample) think of turning that line into the chorus? i never would've thought of it (guess thats why im not a producer) but it sounds sooo clean in dark fantasy
Great song. I have this album somewhere on cassette! Checked on amazon to update to a CD and it's a small fortune and also unavailable on itunes! Is this album going to be reissued as the first 3 oldfield albums have been in the last couple of years? I hope so, it's great, can make do with listening to it on youtube for now...

@tpose5three lmao your right i just get annoyed that alot of people dont know these good songs until someone samples it. but yeezy's version was good. sorry if i rubbed you the wrong way with my words
@kittyxcat8D its all good. i hadnt heard of this till dark fantasy came out & this definitely isnt the type of music i listen too. but after listening to it a few time i actually like it.
@iiuhuhuhuh tell me about it, bring back the originality of the mind. only then will music be beautiful, our culture enhanced and mankind at peace. Kanye needs to stop ripping tracks off dead people.
even though it was a collaboration to produce the song "dark fantasy" i would definitely say that RZA came up with the concept and sampled this. If you are familiar with his work you would know that dark fantasy has a very RZAish beat...actually i only looked this song up because i thought the same sample may have been used on an old Wu-tang track
Wow, this my favorite Oldfield song, and one of my favorite songs in general. @Tyralyon As a 100% Yes fan I like Jon Anderson on he vocals. And I imagine that the drumpart is a small tribute to Bill Bruford, but that might be just me...

@beretboy22 Hip Hop producers kind of have an entire record store in their heads...the way they know exactly what part of an old song they want to sample.
@d0peboimagic2 shiiid I guess the only way they know about songs like this is pure curiosity...I know that I personally discover music from artists I've never heard of at least once a week. My little brother is a producer and he just listens to any and everything that has a melody....nothing is off limits when it comes to sampling...even country music

@tswagg504 yea but theyre hiphop producers how do they kno any of these songs especially songs that are like jazz, classical and etc.
