As nice as it is to think that, their whole look is a marketing ploy that they came up with to please the A&R people at record labels. Their whole image and sound is "Over the top" and appealing to a metal genre they are perfect.

Bands who really liked to remove their appearance from their music (like Pink Floyd, for example) don't appear on their covers or on promotional posters. I knew about how Slipknot looked way before I knew any of their music. Slipknot is all about the image. That drummer, the guitarist on the tele, and the singer are amazing.
