  • and to those who are complaining about how bad this cover is. It's understandable. Shows like this in Canada back then had great artists performing mediocre covers (as Canadian home grown music was not cool; and then came CANCON). You should see the awful stuff the host Chad Allan sung on the same show. Another similar show for horrible covers was "A go go '66" later called "It's Happening"featuring Robbie Lane and the Disciples doing really mediocre covers.

  • I saw this back in time when they originally did it on Let's Go. A frieken awesome cover. To . yazzie1892 , no doubt that is when your were born you dick head!

Piece and love to all! lol

  • yeah, um, well....they tried.

  • Bland.

  • Of course not as great a version as the Small Faces but screw these "top comments"! Guess Who rule.

  • Am i the only one who thinks this version ISNT BAD AT ALL!!??

  • I also think Streethearts version is a lot better, love the Guess Who, but must say this didn'y do it for me.

  • Actually, the Guess Who is one of the few bands with the ability to pull off this cover. On their television show, they routinely covered a variety of material and were very quick studies in that respect.

  • not bad !

  • who the shit is this

  • No this is pre Burton days. There was a switch right around the time that Shakin all over became a hit. This is could be Chad Allen. Originally the group was called Chad Allen and the Expressions.

  • @gratefulgrace1 This is definitely not pre-Burton. That's him on lead vocals. He joined the band in 1966 and this clip is from early 1968.

  • @gratefulgrace1 - COMMON DUDE! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT BURTON CUMMINGS LOOKS LIKE? ITS NOT ELFIS PARSLEY IS IT?

  • hmm, doesn't look like burton's cumming in this one :/

  • @OctoDunn Yes he is. He is the lead singer in this clip.

  • As cover versions go, its not bad at all. The Guess Who's cover of the Turtles' She'd Rather be with me was not bad either.

  • Not cool.

  • Compare this to youtube song - Streetheart Tin Soldier song.

Streetheart's rendition of this song is much better albeit plagarism.

  • Well at least they were cool enough to cover a Small Faces tune. I don't know of any other bands at that time cool enough to pay tribute to one of rock's greatest bands, The Small Faces.

  • @wovokanarchy That's a good point. Took some balls to cover a Small Faces song at that time, especially a Marriott-sung one. I don't think Tin Soldier was ever a big hit in North America for the SFs, though. Which is astounding beause it's probably the greatest song ever recorded by one of the greatest bands of the 60's.

  • It was their job, they were the house band for the TV show Let's GO who of course paid them to cover current songs for the show

  • So I am guessing (no pun) that the purpose of all these covers was to get air time since Canadian TV requires 25% Canadian content or something like that?

  • What is everyone bitching about? This is just fine.

  • this is small faces not guess who

  • Ok, it's a big ask to cover Marriot et al., but I don't think they let anyone down here.

  • Mr Cummings sounds wonderful. His pure tones and excellent phrasing only pay tribute to this Small Faces tune. I think THE GUESS WHO neither mimics or copies their sound or idea, but only lends their professional "spin". Excellent. Perfect. None better.

  • its Guess Who, sounds like Burton

  • @kooolmutha It's obvious the sound quality is poor. It's also a terrible cover version. The two don't mutually exclude each other in this instance.

  • yeah...¡¡¡.. they look like they knew a lot of acids¡¡¡...

  • Tough song. I'd never try it in public. But Cummings does a pretty fair vocal; the backing voices are a big letdown.

It does sound like they're trying for an exact copy of the original, which is usually a bad idea (except when Heart does Led Zeppelin, but I digress). A band as good as the Guess Who is able to put their own stamp on a song and that's what they should have done here.

Fascinating look back in time. Thank you, 69Lovett.

  • small faces with rod steart

  • The main problem is just the ancient recording of this one.

    `

Cummings has the voice that can work great even if you use a camera fueled by live dinosaurs and squirrels running on a wheel.

  • I think the problem isn't so much Cummings' lead vocal here, it's Bachman

Kale, and Peterson's harmonies in the chorus.

  • Burton does a pretty good Steve Marriott here!, though I can understand him a bit better! I LOVE both bands......

  • Why are people complaining that they did this song on a tv show where they didnt choose the songs. The CBC chose the songs and The Guess Who played them. notice on other videos from this show that they are all covers like Buffalo Springfield - Flying on the Ground, The Turtles - She's Rather Be With Me. . . . . so stop dissin!

  • The Guess Who was one of Canada's first international bands and paved the way for the many that followed. Realize these guys were from Winnipeg in the mid 60's. There was barely a paved highway going across Manitoba in those days and the town was called "Winterpeg" and considered a hick town. By the early 70's they had become international stars. This song sucks compared to the Small Faces original version, but listen to their later original recordings which were quite fantastic.

  • These guys ( who I've known for years) had to put together a show for every Wednesday with the top 10 songs in Canada.

They were Canada's best cover band and they evolved into what they became and that means great!

  • Wow! I'm just impressed that Canadian's actually SANG and PLAYED live on their show! Great clip, great band!

  • Actually, the GW were the host band of A Canadian tv show "Let's Go" from 67-68. They did hits from the charts. (and obviously, royalties were paid by CBC) In '68 they were encouraged to start doing their own songs

  • Small Feces was Johnny Rotten's pet name for the Small Faces. Probably because he hated the fact that Glen Matlock was a huge fan of some old 60's mod band. Didn't stop the Pistols from covering Whatcha Gonna Do About though. Sort of. But a rotten nickname from Rotten should always be worn as a badge of honor....

Not one of the Guess Who's finer moments here, but hey, they were brave enough to cover Steve Marriott's greatest song.

  • quod erat demonstrandum ...

long live rock and roll, long live Stevie Marriot, long live HUMBLE PIE !!!

  • chorus chords wrong

    but great drummer

like they were in the main in those days

  • Actually, "Small Feces" is pretty funny.

  • I like this version but, I like both the Guess Who and The Small Faces

  • Did someone actually refer to the Small Faces as the Small Feces? Only a sad, slow, pathetic person with no appreciation for 1960's music could say such a silly thing. I like the Guess Who. But they are not in the same league as the Small Faces.

  • Excuse me, but why should anyone, Small Faces fan or otherwise, give this piece of absolute shit a pass?

Marriott would only be pleased that someone was singing his song. But he'd be pleased to know that my Uncle Charlie sang it in 1968. And Charlie couldn't sing for shite.

To call people "morons" for dissing this is ridiculous. And the fact that you think the Guess Who deserve "charity" sort of speaks for itself here, no?

Small "Feces"? THIS is feces, my friend.

  • @fabrikk60 True enough. I like a lot of Small Faces covers. A few even better than the originals. But this is really bad. Why can't you freely accept that?

  • Comment removed

  • @nancyzeetoo It's very old- 43 years and a little warped due to the age. Not fair to judge it by pristine cd standards lol.m

  • @AmericanWomanDeb Fair enough, but I wasn't comparing it to some pristine CD standard, I was comparing it to the 43 year old Small Faces original out here. And I'm sorry, but no amount of unwarping could get this in the same league.

  • @fabrikk60

Okay, I'm a Small Faces fan and I'll take a stab at saying something "charitable" about this. I like Burton's jacket. Sorry, but that's the best I can do. And I'm afraid referring to the Small Faces - certainly one of the 1960's greatest bands - as the Small Feces is going to get you sent to downvoted oblivion very soon.

  • I'm so glad someone mentioned the small faces because I KNEW when I played this video that something was different. I just grew up listening to the Small Faces version on the 8-track, man was that a good one too. BTW I do love the Guess Who. Who wouldn't?

  • Burt stole the publishing rights from Randy....he bought out Nimbus 9...and did not share.

  • Another Canadian band covered this song and had a minor hit with it named Streetheart. Small Faces are tops but it's good to see other bands appreciate great bands like the Small Faces.

  • This is one of the worst things I've seen. These guys can't touch Marriott...they don't even come close.

  • Bring back STEVE MARRIOTT all is forgiven!!!

  • There is NO way this is any good, sounds way out of tune. Bring on the Smaii Faces..

  • Do people NOT get the fact that at this point they are a house band on a TV show paid to do covers...??

  • Were they paid to do covers badly? If so, this is a job very well done. Me ears are bleeding.

  • This is weird...

It's a total carbon copy of The Small Faces original version- down to the vocal adlibs!

I only really know their stuff from their track on Nuggets 2- It's my Pride, which is blistering...did they have a shameful period between then and the seventies where they just did unimaginative covers for singles, or was there still good stuff on the b-sides etc?

  • The bassist sure seems to have liked Yamaha instruments. This is one of two different models I've seen him playing in these old videos.

  • @ironbuttermilk Probably provided by the show. burtons keyboard is a yamaha A3 combo organ.

  • I cant believe Im seeing this video! It brings back so many Community Club memories of Winnipeg. Thanks for posting it!!!! I played in The Shags...any video of us? Ill be posting The Shags recording of Dr Feelgood/ Smiling fenceposts soon.

  • they were at the The Native Club at River & Stradbrook one night, (remember that joint?) I lived at Donald and Stradbrook so we wandered over to check out the Chad Allen Band or the Reflections, whatever they were called in the ol days, (aka The Guess Who), good ol days

  • ooops, the expressions, not the reflections,

    i had a brain fart

  • Actually you're not totally wrong. They started out in the early 60s as Chad Allen & the Reflections, then changed their name to Chad Allen & Expressions.

  • ooops

i meant chad allen and the expressions

  • a great tune murdered...

  • Is that really Burton Cummings and the Guess Who? It's not that bad but not near as good as the original Small Faces version. The Guess Who later became a very good band with a lot of international hits which wasn't bad for a bunch of hicks from Winnipeg in the 1960's.

  • Ghastly.

  • TGW dont have to "imititate" anyone--along w/ Rush, they're Canada's GREATEST band (btw, no bias--I'm a Yank) I'm thoroughly convinced Cummings is as great (if not better, than even Jagger as a front man) Followed them since "These Eyes" in '68. Marriot was greatest in Humble Pie IMHO

  • Might I respectively suggest you check out the Small Faces catelog in more detail. It is worth it. Marriott's work as front man with them is unparralled (for some reason, he wanted Frampton to be Humble Pie's front man) and the Small Faces are one of the greatest bands to come out of the 1960's. They never made it to the US, but if they had, they would have been massively popular. And their music holds up incredibly well today.

  • No way...Humble Pie sucked. You might be the only person in the world who thinks they were better than the Small Faces! ;)

Greatest canadian band? The Haunted of course

  • Steve Marriot was a great singer...too bad he died in a house fire in England years ago..

  • about ten miles from where I live...

  • wow...no shit? that's a drag, man...

  • not as much of a drag as this unimaginative cover! ;)

  • you're right...it's sub-standard--I never said I liked the cover, but the BAND usually is great..I mean..C'mon, "American Woman" ? Now that tune PROVES Cummings & Bachman are gods..

  • It's all about It's My Pride.

  • best song ever done by the guess who or any band.........i always wanted to cover it

  • yes Marriott was a phenomenal singer...I wonder who the f*** gave you thumb down for this comment?

And it's true, he died in a house fire, and this was indeed a very sad moment for many people.

  • Just because you don't like hard rock and heavy blues, it doesn't mean HP sucked. They were totally different band, comparing them to SF is ridiculous. Even belief that they were only loud boogie band really isn't true. Listen to: As Safe As Yesterday Desperation Wrist Job Home And Away Heartbeat Cold Lady A Song for Jenny To name a few. HP were GOOD.
  • lol

I can hear steve marriott rotating in his grave.

  • well, I don't think so. I've read somewhere that he was cremated...

I don't think we'll hear a Tin Soldier's cover which tops the original.

  • Wow, this seems so un-CBC. How times change.

  • My ears hurt. Who, pray tell, is giving this 5 stars? The Small Faces must have laughed their little arses off when they heard this.

  • Of course this isn't as good as The Small Faces. But it doesn't suck either. I'm The Guess Who covered it. Remember that The Small Faces didn't have much success in North America outside of Itchycoo Park. I am sure if The Guess Who had decided to record it in the studio they would have refined it and made a good rendition of it. But I do agree no one matches Steve Marriott and P.P. Arnold on this song.

  • I think the problem here is that they are trying to imitate the Small Faces' version as opposed to doing their own Guess Who version. That invites a head-to-head comparison between the two, and in that contest, guess who is going to come up on the small end of the stick.

My favourite Small Faces cover is the Libertines version of Lazy Sunday Afternoon, in part because although they capture the spirit of the song, they still put their own mark on it.

  • Methinks they need not give up the day job. Insult to Marriott this is

  • Guess who is playing this song.

  • I give up, who is playing this song :-D ?

(I know, I'm not first and probably not even the ten millionth one to do that joke, it's just that you don't get the set-up handed to you on a silver platter every day...)

  • GUESS WHO!

  • awesome..great song!!

  • From the looks on the not so small faces of the Guess Who, I'm guessing they knew they had no business covering this song.

  • Not a patch on Marriott or the Small Faces, anybody states otherwise knows fuck all!

  • please excuse my ignorance, but who the heck is this

  • guess who it is.

  • Well, the good news is that Cummings enunciates better than Steve Marriott. The bad news is that's all he does better than Marriott. Cummings is very talented, but this is just painful. I'll never understand why anyone would try to cover little Steve and the Small Faces. Everyone is going to suck by comparison.

  • nice try - but hey....

  • never seen this before so thanx for putting it on , anyone that covers the small faces must have good taste. nice!

  • Well a bunch of Canadians here., eh!!....Awesome post !!!!! Many thanks to you, 69lovett for this upload,,,Thanks from another -canadiantimberwolf1 for sharing this live clip with me. 5*****!

  • small faces are better in my opinion

  • I totally agree.

  • The video is up side down haha.

Whats wrong with YT today ?

  • Maybe it's YOU that is upside down :p

  • HA HA HA No its not me.

  • The reason they covered this song was that Let's Go could only afford to hire local bands to cover the latest hits, which is why you see clips of them doing this song, the Turtles' She'd Rather Be With Me, Buffalo Springfield's Flying On The Ground, etc. When they auditioned for the show, they were supposed to be able to read charts of these songs, but they found out the songs, bought the records and memorized them, and pretended to read off the charts at the audition.

  • that's burton cumming... he's better with the guess who; canada's best rock band ever! imho,

marriot blows him away . different types of singers though. marriot- a credible white ray charles

burton cumming more like a bargain basement lounge ridden jim Morrison [ who incidentally kicks ass]

    just my opinin from vancouver!

  • The Small Faces are so underrated...I love their album Ogden's Nut Gone Flake...downright amazing!

  • amazing !

  • As with everything, it gets better as time goes by. That goes for Cummings vocals also. This is not one of his finer moments. Have you heard "American Woman Live 1970." Better yet, and then listen to him lately and he sounds even better.

  • as for all the arguments over voices, well, i think it's judgement values which make rock (or opera for that matter)suck. god gives everyone a unique voice and people have peaks and valleys -- so whose better whose best when nothing stays the same?.....that said, cummings voice sounds roughly identical to marriots, except on the bridge; maybe marriot is more intense on the bridge (by a few hairs).

  • It's nice when someone recognizes the brilliance of the Small Faces...but to say his voice is superior to Stevie's...ouch.

  • Well it's a silly argument, they're both great singers... one better for some songs, the other better for others.

Let's hear Steve Marriott do 'Star Baby.'

  • I don't think it's a silly argument, this isn't a patch on the original, they're credible but they just ain't got the soul. No white boy sang as well as Steve.

  • well said random,

the other Steve (Winwood) ran him a close 2nd tho!!!

    Lee

    Liverpool Mods.

  • indeed, they wrote the book, without 'em you'd not have had Plant, Stewart or Rogers or any of the other pretenders. What's mindblowing to me is that they were so young, Neither were even in their twenties when they were turning in incredibly mature performances. Both were lucky enough to learn at the feet of the old US blues players who toured in the early 60's.

  • I prefer the Small Faces.

  • i prefer coke.

  • Good cover.. love the Guess Who... this song has been covered so much, and as everyone knows, there is simply no touching the original. But this is still a nice tribute.

  • Small Faces

  • Geez, I didn't realize Jim Kale was so nimble on his feet!

  • good cover but Marriott is the best

  • Steve Marriott of The Small Faces would be rolling in his grave seeing this ... he wrote this song for his wife.

  • Que merda é essa?

Tudo bem ... foi a três séculos atrás...

  • Yeah he gained a ton of weight and then lost it again I'll give you that. He is young here and looks a lot different.

  • Its clearly Randy Bachman on guitar

  • OK Mickdog, I'll take you word for it. Gotta admit, if I look really hard, I can see Randy. Guess I didn't recognize him so svelte! But, he is "svelte" again. Good on him.

Listen to him every Saturday night on CBC Radio One. Great show.

  • I have this videotape also...perhaps I should post Chad Allen and the good time music appreciation society....Theres alway Mary!

  • Ooops. The apparent date of that show is Jume 28.

  • Is this the early Guess Who, or the Deverons (Burton's former band)? I don't really see Randy Bachman in this.

By the way - I don't know how many of you listen to Randy Bachman's radio show on CBC Radio One Saturday's at 7:00 PM (it's an awesome show, and I am not a CBC employee!!), but he is apparently doing a show on rock in the Winnipeg in the 1960's!! There was no more rocking place in Canada at that time than right here in River City.

Go ahead, name the great groups/singers from here!

  • This is a really cool choice for a cover, but B. Cummings can't even come close to the beauty of Steve Marriot.

  • RuleOfGrimmace - I appreciate your love of Steve Marriot, but Burton had it all over Steve. Much better vocalist! But that is my opinion, and I don't say it to put your opinion down. Just my opinion. By the way, I love Steve too.

  • Yes, at 2:20 you can see clearly that it is Randy Bachman on guitar.

  • "Burton had it all over Steve"? Just what kind of drugs are you on???? Play the original that's on here and compare....there's no comparison.Marriott is up there with the best r&b singers of all time....Burtons not a bad singer, but he doesn't come nowhere close to Marriott.Guys like Paul Rodgers,Mick Jagger,Rod Stewart,Robert Plant all have talked of Steves brilliance.

  • madshadow, I merely stated my opinion, and in a much nicer way than you stated yours, I might add. What kind of drugs am I on? What kind of question is that? Not nice, at all. Anyway, I love the way Burton sings the song. I also love the way Marriott sings it. I just prefer Burton. My opinion. No slander, just individual opinion is all.

  • burtons got a lisp. and the chorus is all over the place. marriotts vocals are far thuperior !

  • I think this just be the fact that this is a lower bit transfer from a video. I'm sure the "lisp" wasn't there when it was broadcast.

  • 69Lovett, you rock! Where do you find this footage?

  • both versions are great smallfaces & guess who so just enjoy both of them great song both great bands let it go schhhhhhhhhhhhh LISTEN

  • Cool.let it go,schhhhhhhh LISTEN.Awesome!Totally Right!So Cool Vibes!!!Thx-u.Cheers!!

  • THANK YOU SummertimesBlues WE ALL JUST WANT TOO LISTEN TOO THE MUSIC THAT,S WHAT IT,S ABOUT THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENT

  • is this not the small faces?

  • dont be phukin ridiculous

  • It's not "The Small Faces" in this video. That is for sure Burton Cummings as lead singer.

  • I Agree.ur Right!It's Burton Cummings.Lead Singer.Extradonaire,Extradonary!Wow!His Voice,w/his Distinct,Lovely Style Singing,Lead of course!Early Burton.Thx.Ta on Posting!Cheers!

  • I actually think this is the band "The Small Faces" if I remember correctly. Great song though!

  • This version is Defintley Burton Cummings.The Small Faces do it,too,jst not this Verion.But they're Great-True! Also,Check-out Forienger,w/Lou Gramm,Awesome Hard Rock!!And Streetheart(Drugstore Dancer-CD/Album).It's All Great!Hv the Album!Lou Gramm's Vocals,Excellent!!Hard Rock!Perfect. Thx.

  • well that was a great one too

  • U knw ur Music,there!Winnepeg Rocks!Wow!Ain't Burton Cummings,Randy Bachman,frm there?Thx.,man.Oh yeh,Vanc.Rocks too!And B.T.O.,The Guess Who,and Burton Cummings, Solo!Cummings,and Bachman Together-The Guess Who!Alwys.B.T.O,Not Fragile,Tour!Caught it!"4 Wheel Drive,4 Wheel Drive..!"

  • Small faces original version is better. This is good though.

  • beatiful

  • it's tough because they weren't really being given a lot of freedom for original material. a great video, blast from the past, but i'll have to agree, despite flashes of brilliance from burton, marriott's version is far better. was this lineup cummings, bachman, peterson, and kale? looks like it.

  • yes this is the original (minus Chad Allan) Guess Who of Canned Wheat, Wheatfield Soul and American Woman fame.

  • I always liked Guess Who, but they shouldn't have touched this classic! No one can sing like Steve Marriott!!

  • Agree, my friend. This song defines Steve Marriott-best singer of rock history, although Guess who is a fantastic band.

  • I've heard this done by Todd Rundgrun, Small Faces, and these guys.

  • this is great...no question, but the streetheart version owns..haha funny how the small faces is the worst one..haha my opinion

  • Thanks to 69Lovett for digging up this gem.

  • Yea, great stuff. I think it's from the CBC weekly tv show "Let's Go"

  • Yeah, it's from "Let's go", we watched it after school in the 60s....

  • If memory serves, "Let's Go" originated from different CBC studios, moving east to west: Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vancouver. Can you guess who was the featured band from Winnipeg?

  • this one of greatest things i have seen here.
