And just so you know, the L98B2K is the engine of the Calloway Corvette, which was used during those 2 races. Also, it was because of those 2 races that the rotary engine was banned from the "24 hours of LeMans" for 10 years, because all the other car makers cried like little bitches, claiming the RX-7s had an unfair advantage over them using an "experimental" engine even though it was the same engines in their production cars. During the '86 race, your beloved Chevy went though 5 L98B2Ks for different reasons, but most of the just seized up due to overheating & mechanical failure.

anfd another thing the rx-7 is a sports car not a muscle car. it is designed to run the run the mountains of japan at racing speed and make the turn not run straight down a cliff. ^^ its a great balance between power and handling, that wankel rotary with its high revs and unique characteristics gave the car its personality. a soul that endears it to people, it'll be a loss if you gonna put another engine in it. if you do that the whole essence s lost it'll just be another car.

@00greyman its high revving characteristics actually requires a different style of driving since to get the best performance you need to keep the revs high. well kinda most racing engines are. rotaries are actually more akin to high performance racing engines. have done well in it. a class of its own. have you heard of le mans? beaten porsche, ferrari's and other high performance super cars. ^^

Just 'cuz it's a rotary doesn't mean it's bad. Some people don't mind rebuilding their engines every 100k miles or so, and I wouldn't either. The way the RX-7 and RX-8 are built, they're meant to have the rotary engine, not some normal combustion engine. It'd probably change the way the handling on the car is. It just wouldn't be the same.
If the RX-8 compares to the S2K/350z, rotaries can't be as bad as you think.

Rotary engine is good. People swap because they have bad luck with them or have difficulty self-tuning or dont feel confident with them.
I like the rotary. I was planning on swapping but i'd like to feel a large single turbo rotary before i put in a 1jz, 20b n/a street port or something cool and fun like that. We'll see. Either way, rx7's are awesome cars and rotaries are really fun engines.

Most people just dont understand the concept, thus do not maintain as they should. Ya sure rotaries have their flaws but so do piston motors. Piston motors go bad just as much, if not more than rotaries. Its just that people dont understand the concept of a rotary. If rotary motors were introduced before the reciprocating motor a.k.a. piston motor, im sure it would be the other way around. Either way you shouldnt be saying rotary motors are shit. They arent.
aji8 you obviously dont truly know what stages the rotary motor has been through in terms of development. This style of motor was introduced in 1957 by felix wankel. In the early 1960s Rolls Royce had a two stage deisel version of the wankel motor. Since then it has been improving. With mass production through Mazda. They dont include rotaries in most race classes and such because there simply is not a true competitor for the capability of a rotary.
The pistonhead folks can whine about rotaries all they want but I'd humbly suggest they go drive and one for a few hours. I find my rx7 gives me loads of grin factor comparable with my much quicker v8 TVR.
I drove one for about 2 weeks and that was enough for me. I don't know why you were grinning as I was scowling wondering where all the power was. Sure it could rev but I wanted the car to move fast. Something the junk rotary couldn't do.

I'm not sure what you think you know about the 13BT, 13B-REW, 13B-RE or even the 20B but the 1.3L 13B is producing in the 1000 WHP mark these days. aji8, i agree with some of what you are saying but not all of it, the rotary motor, if give the same amount of development as the piston motor, would by now far out perform it in every degree, it has fewer moving parts and at NO stage does any part of the motor have to stop in order to continue the combustion process (unlike the piston motor) also any motor when modified will have problems not just Rotary, oh & by the way a factory 20b produces more torque than the first gen RB26 407 vs 353 NM

anfd another thing the rx-7 is a sports car not a muscle car. it is designed to run the run the mountains of japan at racing speed and make the turn not run straight down a cliff. ^^ its a great balance between power and handling, that wankel rotary with its high revs and unique characteristics gave the car its personality. a soul that endears it to people, it'll be a loss if you gonna put another engine in it. if you do that the whole essence s lost it'll just be another car.

Just 'cuz it's a rotary doesn't mean it's bad. Some people don't mind rebuilding their engines every 100k miles or so, and I wouldn't either. The way the RX-7 and RX-8 are built, they're meant to have the rotary engine, not some normal combustion engine. It'd probably change the way the handling on the car is. It just wouldn't be the same.
If the RX-8 compares to the S2K/350z, rotaries can't be as bad as you think.

@aji8 Oh yea....and another note. In that video with the V8 vs. the 12a Rotary, notice how much easier and smoother the rotary car corners and controls. Again another big plus. That is why I love the rotary, better weight balance and car control. Watch carefully how each driver controls their cars. And the lesser powered 1.2 liter rotary beat the more powerful 5.0+ liter v8 boat anchor. Just one of many reasons why I keep the rotary. Ta-Ta. (*_^)

Rotary engine is good. People swap because they have bad luck with them or have difficulty self-tuning or dont feel confident with them.
I like the rotary. I was planning on swapping but i'd like to feel a large single turbo rotary before i put in a 1jz, 20b n/a street port or something cool and fun like that. We'll see. Either way, rx7's are awesome cars and rotaries are really fun engines.

Piston motors go bad just as much, if not more than rotaries. Its just that people dont understand the concept of a rotary. aji8 you obviously dont truly know what stages the rotary motor has been through in terms of development. This style of motor was introduced in 1957 by felix wankel. In the early 1960s Rolls Royce had a two stage deisel version of the wankel motor. Since then it has been improving. With mass production through Mazda. They dont include rotaries in most race classes and such because there simply is not a true competitor for the capability of a rotary.

You don't make any sense and the rotary is NOT what Mazda built their whole name on as it is only used in one car in their line-up. If Mazda used the rotary engine more they would fail as the rotary owner is a unique person that likes a novelty engine.

aji8, i agree with some of what you are saying but not all of it, the rotary motor, if give the same amount of development as the piston motor, would by now far out perform it in every degree, it has fewer moving parts and at NO stage does any part of the motor have to stop in order to continue the combustion process (unlike the piston motor) also any motor when modified will have problems not just Rotary, oh & by the way a factory 20b produces more torque than the first gen RB26 407 vs 353 NM

A 20B is equivalent to a 4L 4 cycle engine and much heavier than an all iron small block Chevy. It is a waste and a boat anchor.

ok i cant stress this enough,without yelling but ill try. 13b is 1.3 liters . each rotor has a displacement of .65 liters so if you if you add that to 1.3 liters it becomes just over 2 liters. so 13b is a 4 cyl 1.3 liter ,20b is a 6 cyl 2 liter , 26b is an 8 cyl 2.6 liter . when you talk shit about somethin lear about it first .BTW CHEVY IS JUNK . the only good chevy engine is zz572, other than that mustangs and Cobras for years have annialated the competition as true american muscle

a 20b is equivalent to V8 not 4 cylinder engine, there are 3 rotors in a 20b so 1 rotor has 3 sides for ignition ,
so you do the math 3x3=9 that is 9 strokes
compared to 8 strokes for a V8 ,
and second a 20b is a 2000cc engines and is defiantly a lot lighter than a samll block

I own 3 rotary cars (2 FC's and one FB). They all run with no engine problems.
Change your oil at the right time, make sure your OMP is working and keep it rich just in case of overboosting = a fast reliable Rotary.

incorrect 20b is not an 8 cylinder. one revolution of the eccentric shaft has 6 firing points , therefore it is a 6 cylinderon a 13b it fires 4 times that extra stroke is more of a ballast
