well simple mistake.. when its darting to get away from you.. you can't really see cat eye things and stuff like that. hahaha. so whatever. its a snake with a fish in its mouth in nature.. still cool no matter what kinda fish it is. :)
Well I was with a semi-expert in the snake world. & we looked it up after the outing to make sure. My best guess for him swimming is because he kept trying to get away from us on the shore and he couldn't. So he went under a near by rock. But the water there was only about an inch deep. So all he had to do was hold his head up.
@CaitVCD Its a watersnake for sure. They eat lots of fish. Copperheads eat mainly warm-blooded prey at that size. They also look nothing alike, copperheads have a cat-like vertical eye pupil unlike this watersnakes round pupil. copperheads are much prettier too!
Definitely a water snake. They are similar, though, which leads many people to believe that they have been bitten or "attacked" by a copperhead because of how grumpy and aggressive these guys can be. I've never picked one up without being bitten. Not like Black Rat Snakes or Garter snakes where some are grumpy and some aren't, these guys are always grumpy, especially when they are shedding skin....

Positively a northern watersnake, but still cool that you got to see a watersnake eat a fish.
