  • i get to do a gig with him for our jazz band im scared o.O

  • @bobilleg74 no this is malcolm arnold

  • see this is the shyt that makes you want to quit fuckin playin the trombone lol. even joe alessi sitting on the side looking shitty ass hell

  • he's our all-state clinician this year. so fucking excited.

  • Sublime!

  • Yes, yes that is Joe Alessi Watching in the backround. :)

  • I studied jazz with Mr. Gordon for a week, and he is absolutely phenomenal.

  • I kinda wonder what does on in his head when he plays this stuff. Is it "I know exactly what I'm going to play and its going to be awesome!" Or is it "Well lets try this out...". Whatever he's thinking, it works. A lot.

  • Wow this is sick!

  • Look at 1:29 he blows so strong, it seems he isn't able to hold his slide.. wow!

  • I know everybody there sold their trombones that night

  • Joseph Alessi at 2:00

    ".....fuck."

  • I love the random didgeridoo moments he throws in there, just awesome.

  • I had to make a conscious decision to close my mouth after watching this.

  • I don't know whats more impressive having this memorized or making it up on the spot..

  • @chrissayshello123 thats so hard to answer lol allessi or wycliffe...

  • Is it bad that I have a boner?

  • @punkskunk95 no

  • jazz vs classical omg *passes out on floor*

  • @moomooluke ...But what if you play Strings and Brass?

  • The whole time, Joe is thinking, "God, I need to go practice : / "

  • joseph alessi is like "wtf man."

  • Love the two varitations on the same tune..... Alessi plays it the way it is supposed to be played... Gordon plays it the way it should be played...... they are both amazing trombonists.

  • @moomooluke Hey man, whats wrong playing some string on the side? Jazz is great on all instruments! :)

  • this guy is great!

  • @mlouis I'm not sure how to describe it. but what i do is put my tongue on my top lip and roll my tongue off my lip instead of the roof of my mouth (i guess).

Hope this helped, but that's how I do it.

  • @ub3rd00d lol..do u kno any videos or websiites tha demonstrate it...nd how do i make my tongue roll

  • can anyone tell me what technique he is using at around 0:56.?..nd how i can do it....idk

  • @mlouis206 The technique is called being a boss. It can't be learned, u just have it or u dont! :)

  • Love how Joe Alessi is just chilling in the background.

  • those 11 dislikes are obviously hardcore classical woodwind players.

  • @slightlystef like you? =D

  • Holy shit

  • Comment removed

  • 3:25, getting sentimental over you? or am I imagining things?

  • @hailey8795 i dunno if it was intentional, but I heard it

  • Comment removed

  • How the hell did he memorize that?! Frikkin beastly!

  • @SpiralMurphy He improvised it.

  • jeeeeezzzz.. this is amazing

  • the trombone is one of the most under appreciated instrument out there.

I play the alto sax, but I honestly think the trombone PWNS

  • Excellent!!

  • 10 People got tromboned.

  • One of the best Jazz Trombonists out there

  • gosh this guy is just amazing. what mouthpiece is he playing on???

  • extremely to different styles but both godlike in the flow, im killing myself now

  • Comment removed

  • I love Joseph's face in the back ground XD

  • @cowboyforrest13 probably wondering what is he doing without a trigger! lol

  • @staflo10 You don't need a trigger when playing predominately in the upper registers seeing as there's nothing that can't be played past third basically.

  • Now this video is a fantasy i would love to be in.

  • He can speak through his trombone better than many of us speak normally.

  • He is using one of Christian limbergs mouthpieces there not worth looking at. Very thin like Denis wick

  • @bobkiller82 i think he's using a Monette Prana. and wicks are a lot better than lindbergs, but lindbergs arent really too bad, just small

  • jumping off a cliff now.

  • @bagel345 is it a WyCLIFFe? haha

  • he came to my middle school for the band kids it was pretty rad i loved it...i only saw a lil bit of him playing :D

    im a choir kid<3

  • THIS GOES BEYOND CONTROL. HE BECAME THAT HORN AND IT DID WAT HE TOLD IT TO

  • What type of mouthpiece is he using?

  • @BuckTrombonist Hes using a Monette PRANA Model TS-6

  • at 0:55 sec u can just groove old school jams

  • the sound at :49 is truly epic i rofl for an hour because of it!

  • beast

  • I feel like practicing now!

  • He's my mentor. im scared.....

  • Who is going to listen to this besides trombonists? I don't think anyone will.

  • @tromboneman10 I'm a trumpet player.... :P And no, I didn't dislike, this is amazing.

  • That noise at 0:49 has just made my life

  • @tomnottim I keep rewinding and listening to it over and over again and I laugh each time out of sheer amazement!

  • This can't be described as anything less than epic.

  • WHO THE HELL DISLIKED THIS?! IDIOTS

  • @giffenbone trumpet players...

  • @Kylespisla On the contrary, I am a trumpet player, and LOVED it!

  • OMG 4:10 I shat a brick!!!!!!!

  • @IowaEuph i was reading comments while watchin this and say you said this. i clicked on 4:10 and the same thing happened

  • god hes like beat boxing in the trombone at one point.

  • i though he was playing at 1:11 thru fire and flames :P

  • @MegaTromboneman Get out.......

  • playing the trombone, he must be doing something else. such as beatboxing. we all know people can beatbox amazingly, so i used an analogy. please, just stfu and stop bringing your negativeness to wycliffe's calming video. thank you and goodbye :)

  • THAT WAS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Two brilliant Trombonists in two different genres.....I'd listen to either of them all day long!!!

  • joe at about 1:25-1:35 is hysterical, so serious, so brooding!

  • wycliffe doesnt play the trombone, he just beat boxes into it.

  • @Kylespisla what he does is has sex with it cuz ur mom just doesnt cut it. im sure he can play trombone better than you!

  • @sneakybeaver13V2 ummm what? i never said i was better then him. im no where near at good as him.

  • @Kylespisla i never said that you said that you could play better than him.

  • @sneakybeaver13V2 then why did you say "im sure he can play trombone better than you!" to be an ass?

  • @Kylespisla not really. it was because you were bashing on him.

  • @sneakybeaver13V2 i wasnt bashing on him... i said he doesnt play the trombone he just beatboxes into it. its a joke and its not meant to offend, attack or bash anybody. im sorry if you took it that way, because your must be retarded. wycliffe is amazing and nobody can deny that. anybody who does should be stabbed with a spoon repeatedly. and you my friend obviously have no sense of humor if you cannot tell a joke. if anything iwas complimenting wycliffe in his amazingness by saying he cannot be

  • @Kylespisla i have a good sense of humor.sadly you cant tell sarcasm through text so i wasnt able to see the you were joking.im very sure most people would take that as an insult..

  • Where can I buy his skills? Does someone knows??? jajaja I would die trying to do something close to that!!!

  • hahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha

  • man i dont even know how someone could could begin to learn to do that

  • Okay. the point of these two videos is show two different perspectives on the way music can be played, neither is better they just have different approaches too the same material.

  • Alessi is better than Lindberg. I've seen them both in person and Alessi is better.

  • I don't get how he's playing that swinging shit and all the classical trombone players are just staring at him, probably wondering how many notes he hit accurately. Here's a soulful phraser in front of a bunch of stuck up classical technical jockeys. Alessi should be clapping his hands, not thinking. It's not the right hang for wycliffe. I feel bad for him having to entertain people who don't have a pulse.

  • HUBBA WYCLIFFE!!!!

  • @the1andonlybleek I like your comment man1 I can call him the eloquent Monster.

  • Hes not really playing the song, hes just doing some sexy improv to the chords of "Fantasy". The main reason Joe would never do this kind of this is cause he's not black, he cant pull it off.

  • @OMGedInStoresNearYou Whoa. thats crazy to say. Some of the most respected jazz trombonists past and present are white. Do we really have to divide everything by race? its getting old.

  • @Owunthrizzel Well i wasnt being entirely serious. But there is truth in the fact that Alessi is not nearly as good a JAZZ musician as gordon

  • its great to see some variety in trombone playing :) 2 top players of their genre. awesome!

  • that dude is scratching on his trombone. Larry David in the back loved that shit!

  • Alessi is SO MUCH CLEANER! Wycliffe is good but his tone has alot of problems unlike Alessi who plays his cleanest all of the time. thats how you compare the two.

  • @WrightTenorBone

Honestly, I think Lindberg is a cleaner player than Alessi.

  • alessi is PISSED

  • Comment removed

  • I saw him yesterday evening in Ascona, Switzerland. Great trombone!

  • Alessi plays by the rules and makes beautiful art. Gordon shatters the rules of traditional music and creates a genre.

  • All I can say is...DAAAAMN!!!!

  • goddamn! chill out wycliffe you insane man!

  • Some players can make the trombone sing. Wycliffe can make it sing, shout, scream, yelp, burp...Utterly captivating!

  • This guy directed the Kentucky All State jazz band that I was in this year.

  • dats wat i call "jazzin it up a bti"

  • WAUWIEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

  • SOO much better than the white guy lolz :DD so awesome and amazing, wish my trombone skills will one day be half that : P

  • 1:28 the note in second position is probably high for a trumpet to play... holy eff

  • Saw him tonight and got his autograph at Byrom Center HS :D

    He was great, no...AMAZING :D

  • ahhh two great players. Both absolutely amazing at what they do. I'd be happy to be able to play like either of them.

  • is this from the "two sides of the slide" masterclass?

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

  • Now that's how u play the trombone!

  • wow im surprised nobody in the audience like laughed or anything... or jumped!!!!

  • Oh ma GOD! & this Man played with us at ma skool..!

  • i lol'd at joeseph alessi just sitting awkwardly in the backround

  • wycliffe's coming to my school this saturday. i;m unbelievabley stoked.

  • @5000Flores I just got home from your school's jazz fest. I came home early cause my mom was there. I'm a little upset that I can't see Wycliffe, but she didn't have to get up at 2 in the morning to come and get me. I am the drummer for Kingman.

  • Neither of these guys are afraid to move some air! I'll bet you can feel the air pressure in the room change when they take a breath before they play.

  • man they are both so good its incredible

  • Man.. Awesome...

I hope to see Wicliffe in real life...

    Wow.

  • he was our conductor at the all-state jazz ensemble in louisville, KY. he is absolutely amazing. we played a lot of his original music, including wishing well, hallelujah shout and somebody new. amazing.

  • @CherokeeCheval Wow, who is this? i was in that ensemble with you. i was the bass player with the 6-string.

  • and wycliffe is actually coming to a jazz festival in sc that im going to playing with the all state jazz band so i will be able to hear him in real life

    so awesome

  • lol two of the best trombone players ever in the same room

  • I never get tired of watching this

  • Awesome. Loved listening to every second of it!

  • Grande músico!!!

  • not bad.

  • holy shit!!!!! he is gooodddddd

  • no. he is god.

  • Look at Joe Alessi over ther lol!!

  • It's because Joe played the original Fantasy of Malcolm just before this impro :P

  • i get to meet this guy in February. He's guest directing the All-State Jazz Ensemble here in Louisville, Kentucky.

  • spettacolare!!!!!

  • Is very good, oh my God, to lord !

  • monette

  • omg.........

  • Great sound effects. Joe makes music tho.

  • wow...

  • :-O ......

  • How Could These People Be Sitting Down!!!

If I Was There I'd Been Jumping All Over The Place!!! :)

  • because they are just amazed that they can't move

  • Dey bee white!

  • chops of steel, amazing flexabilities, tonguing like no other, and effects you shouldn't be able to make and I STILL like Alessi way better

  • Me too.

  • Every time I watch this video there more things that make me feel like shit. Just his interval jumps alone are something to make me cry.

  • although i agree Gordon has amazing technique and effects, half of the sound just sounds like beat boxing into the trombone

  • Wycliffe Gordon is awesome!

  • is wonderfull..que destreza de W. Gordon impresionante trombone very good flexibility

  • all I can say is wow. now I want to play the fantasy like that!

  • Thanks, Wycliffe!

  • This man is OUT-F'N-RAGEOUS AT TROMBONE!!! i dont know why the ppl there were just clapping....they shoulda been makin it rain 100's or something!!!! and when he licked his lips and hit that high not i jizzed twice---THANK YOU WYCLIFFE!!!!

  • @zoman3 Well I guess it's hard to appreciate. I've never been into music and this doesn't seam very impressive to me. But I'll take everyone's word for it that it's good :)

  • @zoman3 I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this was a jazz clinic... in which case the audience only claps because they're all young trombone players who are depressed they will never be as good as Wycliffe ;)

  • Another great underrated bone player

  • Arrazou o cara é bom demais!!!!!

  • dang at 4;10 i almost thought that there was a trumpet playing

  • There is such a thing as perfect tuning - Just Intonation. And Alessi does the tuning better.

But Wycliffe sure is fun :)

  • It's not the same category. Both are cool.

What is funny is that Alessi play the piece as is it written while gordon is listening and then do an improvisation on the thema (well, not for long).

Also the face of alessi is funny when gordon plays :D

  • Wycliffe has swing~ ^_^

  • he is a legend^^

  • i love Wycliffe Gordon

  • how can you compare alessi and wycliffe?

jazz and classical trombone playing is completely different

  • hey man...you gotta like one more than the other...and although alessi is impeccable with technique, wycliffe sure does make it more fun to listen to!

  • is he from NY??

  • no. Wycliffe is from Georgia.

  • Can't we all agree that they are both amazing?

  • no that´s wrong...his tone is as good as the tone of alessi! and his technic is better...

  • Wycliff has a brighter tone than Joe, that's his style. They both have unmatched technique, I think Wycliff has him on flexibility, but Joe has better articulation. All my opinion though...
