Who in the real world drives cars like this? NYC cab drivers? The Honda Pilot has a lot of room in the 2nd and 3rd row and since I have kids and parents to drive around, it was my choice. The Mazda is very nice and the Toyota is just bleh.
I spent several weeks comparing these 3 vehicles along with the Hyundai Veracruz. Hands down by a long shot the best of the bunch and winner in my book was the Mazda CX9. It looks the best, had the best fit and finish feel and drove the nicest and performed the best.
We got a Mazda cx-9 for much cheaper than the pilot and the highlander. It was well equipped at 41K MSRP, but we got it for 32K. It has been a dream to drive.

we recently performed a multi AWD / 4WD testing @ Lancelin West Australia. Petrol (p) & Diesel (d) vehicals. Toyota Landcruiser 09, (p & d) Toyota Prado 09 (p) Nissan Patrol 09 (p), Mitsubishi Outlander 09 (p), Honda CRV 09 (p), Jeep Cher 09 (p) Subaru Forester 09 (p). Of all the tests performed, the Subaru Forester travelled further in sand, higher up sand incline tests without tyre deflation. Every single other vehicle mentioned could not match the Subaru even with deflated tires at 15 psi.

@markkloplepol ToyotaHilux and Toyota Land cruiser take those cars in the anal. But it's true that if your searching for something in the middle those aren't the cars for you. Biggest flaw of all 7 seaters that though they have 7 seats the back row seats are never comfortable. if your planning a long 6 hour trip then you can't fit much larger than a 9 year old kid and younger there. But can you move the back row of the honda back. Because it has the space for it. I rather have comfort over cargo

Hmmm let me see my family is going to buya new 7-8 seater suv - crossover. And they are having conflicts.Thumbs up if you want them to choose highlander or thumbs down if you want them to choose the pilot.
This review seems to be focusing solely on performance. It fails to mention that the CX-9 has terrible visibility in the back and sides relative to the other two cars. Its also has less cargo and interior space than the Pilot despite having the same external dimensions. The interior isn't as nice overall as the other two better.
It does handle better than the other two, but the Highlander is pretty close. The Pilot gets the edge in space. Its okay if all you want is engine performance.

the only vehicle that has altered by ford is the mazda tribute. all the other vehicles are strictly mazda. my mom has a 2002 tribute and its not bad at all. we love it. and im absolutely sure we would like all the other vehicles mazda has offer.

@harmankardonbose i hate people who keep bringing that up. i read a story recently, (i will try to find it again if i can) that says out of 75 cars tested (they were cars of owners who claimed it ahppened to them), only one actually had any problems. toyota said they found the same thing, it also showed that the drivers didnt have their brakes when they claimed to it have happened. so really most of it was fake and either way it is fixed now
Honda is so OVERRATED.. I've test driven both the Pilot and CX9.. The Pilot has the best interior but with Performance and Quality, i'd go with the CX9.
During the last 22 years i have owned 7 Mazda`s. ALL of them have lasted past the 300000 miles mark, and none of them had the engine go out while i owned them.
My current car a 85 929 Coupe (HB chassie, never aviable in the US) passes 300K miles any day now, and does still reliabely gets me around, even manages cold starts in -34 celsius (thats -29 Fahrenheit) without connecting a block heater.
Here is my quick review.
The car that will DIE the first is going to be the mazda cx-9.
The car that will LIVE the longest is going to be the honda pilot.
The toyota highlander is all around respectable and it lands in the middle.

This review seems to be focusing solely on performance. It fails to mention that the CX-9 has terrible visibility in the back and sides relative to the other two cars. Its also has less cargo and interior space than the Pilot despite having the same external dimensions. The interior isn't as nice overall as the other two better.
It does handle better than the other two, but the Highlander is pretty close. The Pilot gets the edge in space. Its okay if all you want is engine performance.

these cars aren't sold outside of north america (with the exception of the highlander, which is sold in australia as the kluger).
they were designed to be enormous (in other words, they were designed to be american) by americans for americans, and they're all made in north america.

I totally agree with you.. we have never heard of these cars in Europe.. with the partial exception of Mazda cx-7 (aka cx-9) that you rarely see around and you identify it as an "american car".

Highlander's 3rd row scks 4 real. It hurts my BUTT bigtym & my legs everytime i get in dat row & im pretty sure dat's d complain. Interior wys i lyk d CX-9 way better. D way dey designed wit a very luxurious features & styling catch evrybody's attention.
Not mentioning u'll get d luxury package way cheaper dan Highlander

And both have great engines too , and They produce almost the same horsepower per liter
but Honda knows how to create more Horsepower per liter like the S2000

1) Honda Pilot is not a cross over SUV, but a full blown SUV
2) Same goes for the CX-9
3) Same goes for the Highlander
4) None of these have "decent" fuel economy, they're all pigs.

second, it only affected the 2010 highlander
third it has been proven that you can safely stop a car that has unintended acceleration
fourth the problem has been fixed
fifth not every single highlander has that problem
and last it is still the best car for reliability

@carguy379 Sorry, but the Mazda in this case is much better. It's more enjoyable to drive, and more enjoyable to look at and be in. I would trade some reliability for a car that I'm not bored with, which is Toyota's mantra, boring, soul-less, but reliable cars.

@koukicrisp i do kind of regret writing that comment, it was before toyota's qualuty sorta went downhill, at this point i would probably like the mazda or the pilot; i dont know if you have seen the 2010 APEAL rankings but toyota was second to last (jeep was last) i agree that the mazda is better to look at and drive, although i like that the pilot still looks like a truck, I would take the Honda if only they had a new engine with more power and a new front-end

@harmankardonbose i hate people who keep bringing that up. i read a story recently, (i will try to find it again if i can) that says out of 75 cars tested (they were cars of owners who claimed it ahppened to them), only one actually had any problems. toyota said they found the same thing, it also showed that the drivers didnt have their brakes when they claimed to it have happened. so really most of it was fake and either way it is fixed now

Do you know ANYTHING about cars?
During the last 22 years i have owned 7 Mazda`s. ALL of them have lasted past the 300000 miles mark, and none of them had the engine go out while i owned them.
My current car a 85 929 Coupe (HB chassie, never aviable in the US) passes 300K miles any day now, and does still reliabely gets me around, even manages cold starts in -34 celsius (thats -29 Fahrenheit) without connecting a block heater.
300K miles 25 years old Hondas in my area? NONE
