LOOOOOOOVE THIS SONG, wow, I could listen to it over and over again, the end is especially my favorite...it's so psychedelic and colorful and powerful and beautiful. Whatever happened to the Lemon Pipers?? They were awesome.
love this song!!!!!!!!!!! <3333 its ironic how they just finish off with "Listen while and i'll play....then i'd be singing my green tamburine,.....i was thinking wait why am i saying green tamburine when they dont even say it at the end lols. i cant believe i never caught myself and
realize holy shit they dont finish and say my green tamburine Lmfao
Straight outta my childhood. In 68. Listening to WCFL in Chicago. I remember being blown away by the line that goes.." Listen while i playyyyyyyy ".... that unforgetable echo and reverb.
Summer of '68, Central park in NYC, My beloved flower; Diane, Hair down to my chest, this beautiful tune, sharing a joint, drinking cheap wine. I'm building a time machine.
@MultiGubgub what the fuck? Vietnam is still there...it's a member of the UN, their GDP is growing...what the fuck about Vietnam do you want to know? Why are a large percentage of humans starving? well what is this so called "large" precentage"?
I heard this on the soundtrack of "Made in Dagenham" and just had to see if was available on youtube. One of those songs you've forgotten about but when you hear it you can remember all the words! Wonderful!
I think the message of this track is clear. They were expressing their distaste toward what the label was making them play at the time. In the catchy lyrics you find a reference to playing music for money. Green, money, tambourine, music.
Ohh man...I got a major flash back of my sister playing this on a 45 box looking record player an i was 8 years old... playing with my hot wheels next the lving room door. It still sounds cool
@multifrogstar I was 9 that year and also playing with my Hot wheels. I had 7 brothers and when we'd drive my Mom crazy those orange tracks made a great "switch" on our rear ends. lol We drove her and my Dad nuts in those days. Wished I had saved all my Hot wheels cars today.
This song was in the movie "Recess: School's Out" as an extra kind of thing performed after the movie ended... didn't know anything about the real origins of the song until now when i just looked it up haha
Amazing...I still remember the song like it was yesterday. In fact, I arrived at Davis in December and spent New Years in Nha Trang, where I remained until I got out in Saigon in December 1970.
Ron, your music is stellar! This is another of my faves from 'back then' -- all those sound effects, fabulous melody, a feel-good song if I ever heard one. Many thanks! Cheri/CCF/:-))
@radicright You are joking aren't you? It was the hippies and the protestors and the counter-culture who made the 60's memorable. Music this good could not have come from the featureless, expressionless, "Mom's apple-pie is best" 1950's where everyone seemed to be part of a production line Job-Lot and patriotism was considered the highest ideal for any citizen.
Here's a place in time that society forgot. When music was cool, groovy & innocent. Lyrics were clean and people were pure and unspoiled. Unlike today how media serves our kids a bunch of FILTH where lyrics of gang-sta rap & hip-hop are full of profanity, recording artists are horny sexual beings portrayed in videos & pop stars are admired for getting in trouble with the law - WHAT kind of CRAP is that ?? Just citing how societal erosion is deteriorating the very fabric that holds us together.
today anyone can set up a studio, record, and promote it. people at the top are not really sure what is good and what is not. they are inept. and, the people are very fickle today- fickle as the technology they use. today lucinda williams is popular yet each of her songs sounds similar to the others. it all sounds the same. oh well.
The companies only crank out the comercial 'music' because people buy it. If nobody bought it, they'd stop producing it. It annoys me when people blame problems on others, when really it's our fault. We should have never allowed music like that to sell well.
Well I'll say it's more like the chicken or the egg, which came first. I do believe in a more general way we have backed down by allowing it to begin with, the violent and anti-women themes. You are very right in that in the end, we could have done something about it. There is an excellent article in which the author declares it was some sort of tacit agreement with this population, don't riot, don't hurt us and you can do whatever you want. Great, for a while.
Believe it or not, the guitarist on this song went on to be the guitarist on the song "Black Betty", credited to the guitar-heavy rock trio RamJam. Quite a change in style!
@CecilTheSeaMonster I was just about to post the same thing. I read on wikipedia that 3 of the Lemon Pipers were responsible for the re-creation of Led Bellys 'Black Betty' which soon after evolved into Ram Jam's 'Black Betty'.
I remember the summer of '68 when the neighbor kids and I would play the 45 over and over. Hard to believe it's been 43 years. I wanted to be a hippie and to me this song, despite being labeled as "bubble gum music", was the epitome of their "groovy, counter-culture" life style. Of course, from a retrospective view of a 54 year old, maybe it was better that I didn't run away to join the Flower Children. Had my duffle packed and money stashed, but @ 12 I wouldn't have gotten far.
Isn't the new Hippie movement happening in 2015? I've been hearing rumors. But if it is -- I got my hair growing out, my love beads, my black light posters, and my guitar all ready to go :D
So basically this is a song about a bum along the street
.
We have tons of them downtown. Some play tambourines for coins and others say they "just got out of jail" and need me to buy them a train ticket to home
what happen to those days of good and pacific music, why god let them die they are pacifics and made good music, seriously what happen to those days :,(
This is an awesome recording. It is done in a beautiful manner...I still lke it now in 2011. Will probably love it in 2211.that is ifI'm not dead....HA HA BeckyAnne

This song is such a fun little song!! Such great memories with this song!! This song takes me back to days of true happiness and innocence. I miss those days. My heart just aches for those days so much. What a time that was! Never to be forgotten! There was a magic in the air back then that you just cant feel today and that is a real shame. At least we can recapture some of that magic when we hear this song. Missing those days but hold the memories in my heart forever!! ♥♥
I owe you a debt of gratitude for uploading this incredible, beautiful song. (Hate calling any song "classic" as most always stand on their own merits, especially this one!) You rock!!

So many fantastic songs and groups before and after the Beatles, so little credit and play time

I owe you a debt of gratitude for uploading this incredible, beautiful song. (Hate calling any song "classic" as most always stand on their own merits, especially this one!) You rock!!
