The Mid-Atlantic trench is as likely give as the mid continental fault is (because of the thinness of the crust there) and you are entirely right that there is a possibility that either of these could "pop" any time. If one went there is nothing to say that both couldn't though.

I live 12 ft above sea level in southeastern coastal NC. If so, I'm skee-roo'ed. Personally, I'm more concerned about the mega-tsunami that'll be generated when the main Cape Verde islands suffer a tectonic land mass "slip" and slides into the Atlantic. At least we'll have several hours of "get ready" time before we violently drown to death.
