I'd be very interested in finding out the true story behind the career choices DB II has made. I understand his history with Arc Angels, his addiction battle, his solo albums, etc. I DON'T get why he chooses to be a backing singer and guitarist for so many other artists instead of performing and touring with his OWN music. He is such a gifted guitarist/singers/songwriter/producer. I've researched this subject alot and have found no answer. I don't get it..... : (
It's not a competition folks, otherwise there would only be 3 or 4 musicians game enough to play with each other. Musicians don't compare themselves to others, it ain't healthy for the mind or the ego. It's really just about having fun, playing with your mates. Mates don't stand around comparing who's got the biggest dick.
fellow doyle fanatics...i heard on goodle news that he is now dating sheryl crow?? how could that be? i thought he was married with kids to susanne melvione??
I've always known of Doyle backing Eric Clapton and recording with the bigger artists, but just started recently listening to his solo stuff. Very good, its strange how he's flown under the radar all these years, but so it seems anymore with the REAL talented artists.
Check out Doyle's guitar faces between 0:51 and 1:10...classic. His face looks like he just bit into a lemon, hence the "lemon" comment. Doyle plays really well on this solo.
I agree, but I don't think many people actually think that the blues can only be played through a strat. If anyone actually thinks that, then they must be addled. Look at BB, Albert, and Freddie. None of them use strats. Duane Allman used a Les Paul through the highest years of his career. Derek Trucks? The list of really famous strat-blues players is short, but shining: SRV, Jimi, Doyle, Clapton.
and about the others people comments. Please, he's not better then Clapton. He's a great guitar player and I really liked him playing in In The Flesh Live Album with Roger Waters (Pink Floyd), but
Only 2 kinds of people think Eric Clapton is better than Doyle Bramhall II:
1) Old farts that grew up with Cream.
2) People that don't play guitar and have no clue what's actually involved in the craft.
I suggest you buy the Arc Angels album and Doyle's 'Jellycream' solo disc (Clapton has since covered a couple of songs off this album) and then come and tell me about how Doyle has 'along way to go' to reach EC's level.
I think you are confusing personal taste with musical ability/prowess.
Whether you prefer Clapton to Bramhall is entirely subjective and down to individual taste. Whether Clapton is a better guitar player than Bramhall is a matter of technique/chops which can be judged on actual ability. Doyle is better than Clapton, period.
You don't know what you are talking about, and that's a fact! They are both excellent/fantastic guitarist's, YOU, cannot measure who is better by any scientific yardstick. Most people like Clapton more. So why don't you just leave it at that?
jellycream is a cool CD by Doyle it's what turned Clapton on to him. I don't see too many other early twenty something year old's putting a platinum CD out in the name of Arc Angels back in 91, Doyle's style reigns over mine.
Wow, that is some awesome and soulful playing, normally I'm not too into Doyle's playing but this is spot on. Even Derek must have been impressed, he had a big ole grin on his face at the end.
well look at you making assumptions about my style.. I LOVE BLUES are you kidding me? and i saw him play live with robert cray and eric clapton (and derek trucks) and Doyles solos were embarrassing and ppl were booing him.. THAT is what im basing my opinion on ..

You should listen to some of Mayer's trio stuff and then tell me Doyle EATS MAYER ALIVE!!!?? no way. Just cause Mayer started out doing pop music doesn't mean he's a chump on the guitar. They are both great blues musicians period. Doyle is definitely underated tho i must say.
I gotta say, Doyle II is GREAT. I really think John Mayer is a hell of a guitarist (not a great vocalist). But there are many more guys of their generation who can hold their own with either of these guys. Check out Ronnie Baker Brooks, or Bernard Allison, Warren Haynes is a MONSTER, as well as Derek Trucks. And of course Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd are still getting better and better. The BEST new guitarist out there now is Davey Knowles from the group "Back Door Slam" 20yrs old!

He's trying hard not to show up Eric Clapton--by the way Eric Clapton is THE most over rated guitar player EVER--great song-writer but very over-rated playing ability..
John Mayer is talented in his own right but I think he is more popular than DB II simply by the music industry positioning him that way and Mayer doesn't mind playing bubblegum smacking pop tunes every now and again either whereas DB II stays with the harder stuff.
Why is everyone always comparing John Mayer to Doyle Bramhall as huge fans of both Id say there both great and have tons of soul plus its not about whos better
Hey guys, Doyle can actually smoke on the guitar better than anyone else, withMAYBE the exception of Derek Trucks. This guy can go from acoustic folk blues, to electric blues, to rock, to metal. I dont like to usually compare, but Doyle could play circles around John Mayer. Playing guitar is not like jerking off. He is building something you would listen to. Do you know who is godfather was and who taught him? SRV, and he regarded Doyle to be years ahead of so many when he was only 14.
i dont know.. the thing is.. doyle plays the bules. mayer plays a bit more stuff. i mean, he's an amazing acoustic guitarist as well. i mean listen to stop this train or neon the acoustic version. they're just different. so i can see how you might wanna compare them, but at the end of the day, you can't really compare them.
This guy really knows how to make his guitar sing but in terms of pure technical skills he is light years behind John Mayer. But I enjoy watching Doyle, he's cool.
DB II is great. I started following him several years ago because I could tell that he was the real deal. I saw the video of BB and EC doing a cover of a DB II song and was hoping that he would get some respect. He has and now he is the guitar player's guitar player. Doyle you rock, I especially enjoy "SO YOU WANT IT TO RAIN" off of the CD "Welcome." Peace.
well the difference between all of you and Doyle Bramhall is that Eric Clapton thinks he's good enough to tour with him. Unless any of you have ever played to a sold out arena, I think you should shut up.
yup! i like both of them, eric loves him as an artist, thats why hes touring with him. not a lot of people play like him today... in fact, there isnt alot of good music today

i dunno i personally think his playing is a little stale. you can tell he feels the music, yes, but you can also tell he's thinking of what to do next and it's almost unnatural. SRV and john mayer are the only blues guitarist that look natural when they play instead of playing a phrase, waiting, phrase, waiting. they combine it and it sounds like butter. sure doyle can play fast, but it's no the quantity of the notes, it's the quality.
Really if you listen the original great blues guitarists, like Albert/BB/Freddie King, Albert Collins, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy etc (I don't consider Mayer a blues artist and am sick of everyone praising SRV) you will here alot of silences in their phrases - it's totally natural, like speaking. DB2 is doing this to great effect here. Sorry to call you a moron but give the originals a listen and then come back and listen to this.
@Hellhound1in1my1ale The legendary Jazz guitarist Jim Hall once said that "Musical notes are a clever way of getting from one silence to another." ...careful about getting too close to dissin' S.R.V. though... There's a really good reason why he gets the praise he does. ;)
doyle is great.....butpeople runnin their mouths about bb or buddy guy should stop.....everyone has a style.....i bet you critics couldnt play a lick if a gun was at your head
Here's some good players, Walter Trout, the late Frank Zappa, the currently incapacitated Micky Jones from Man (legendary Welsh band), and even more unfashionable but still truly great, Del Bromham from Stray...hey, and noen of em use Austin or Texas as a cruch!!!!
Very nice.. I first saw Doyle on the Crossroad's dvd. If Eric Clapton steps aside and lets you solo then you must be doing something right. The man's solo drips with soul and class.. which is something many modern guitar players lack. I think I saw Derek Trucks back there... not a bad line up.
Yes, his strings are reversed. It's like taking a right-handed guitar, flipping it over and playing it lefty. (His low E string is on the bottom) Only a few people play that way. (Others who do: Otis Rush, Albert King, Babyface, Evie Sands)
Man I've been a fan of Eric Gales from back in 1992 when he his old band were touring. . .he is still phenomenal despite some demons from past but hear things are good for him again!
Cool solo, nice Albert King style licks (sometimes sounds a bit like Jimmie Vaughan too) and Doyle's own ideas meshed together. I need to figure out those little chordal licks he uses, that I have not heard anyone else use before, for example at 2:25. Interesting to see him use a Les Paul, not his usual guitar.
I play the same way too, got some disadvantages on the finger picking but its easier to make high notes scream

Very nice.. I first saw Doyle on the Crossroad's dvd. If Eric Clapton steps aside and lets you solo then you must be doing something right. The man's solo drips with soul and class.. which is something many modern guitar players lack. I think I saw Derek Trucks back there... not a bad line up.

how does he play like that? it looks like his strings are flipped!
greentea23 5 years ago
Yes, his strings are reversed. It's like taking a right-handed guitar, flipping it over and playing it lefty. (His low E string is on the bottom) Only a few people play that way. (Others who do: Otis Rush, Albert King, Babyface, Evie Sands)

You should check out Eric Gales and how he plays backwards and up-side down.

Interesting to see him use a Les Paul, not his usual guitar.

if you listen to his work with the Arc Angels, on the song "See What Tomorrow Brings" he really channels Stevie Ray too
