  • I play the same way too, got some disadvantages on the finger picking but its easier to make high notes scream

  • Incredible. Thanks for posting.

  • It's not a competition folks, otherwise there would only be 3 or 4 musicians game enough to play with each other. Musicians don't compare themselves to others, it ain't healthy for the mind or the ego. It's really just about having fun, playing with your mates. Mates don't stand around comparing who's got the biggest dick.

  • Blues-rock guitar god + sex god = DB II

  • fellow doyle fanatics...i heard on goodle news that he is now dating sheryl crow?? how could that be? i thought he was married with kids to susanne melvione??

  • Just goes to show that it's not about playing as many notes as you can in a given time frame..Doyle is the man.

  • I've always known of Doyle backing Eric Clapton and recording with the bigger artists, but just started recently listening to his solo stuff. Very good, its strange how he's flown under the radar all these years, but so it seems anymore with the REAL talented artists.

  • Southpaw... Like Jimi :)

  • He’s far more respected by musicians in the world of entertainment. He's Superbad!

  • I'm a big JohnMayer fan but his blues guitar work is so mediocre.

  • I would get real tired of this.... after about 2 hours.

  • what's wrong whit his eyes?

  • sweet as fuck, real tasteful, sounds a bit like Albert King, this guy plays proper blues, fuck all that fastest player shit, this is the real deal :D

  • You play with the strings upside down? lol

  • How much more tastefull can you get?

    Love this guy!!

  • Great bends.

  • Attention: Doyle just bit into a lemon, 17 times...hahaha

    Sweet solo.

  • @DGWpg What do you mean ?

  • @theomackay5

Check out Doyle's guitar faces between 0:51 and 1:10...classic. His face looks like he just bit into a lemon, hence the "lemon" comment. Doyle plays really well on this solo.

  • Doyle is the greatest!!

  • It's so funny how he's trying hard not to over shadow Clapton..Doyle is maybe one of the greatest blues guitar players EVER.

  • "maybe" huh? More like 'definately is'. lol

  • I was at this show. This solo melted me.

  • This is for all those douchebags that say you can't play the blue's through anything but a strat.

  • I agree, but I don't think many people actually think that the blues can only be played through a strat. If anyone actually thinks that, then they must be addled. Look at BB, Albert, and Freddie. None of them use strats. Duane Allman used a Les Paul through the highest years of his career. Derek Trucks? The list of really famous strat-blues players is short, but shining: SRV, Jimi, Doyle, Clapton.

  • yea. SRV, Hendrix and Clapton.

that's where my nickname came from ;D lol

and about the others people comments. Please, he's not better then Clapton. He's a great guitar player and I really liked him playing in In The Flesh Live Album with Roger Waters (Pink Floyd), but

Eric clapton just... sodomize Doyle lol.

  • Do I hear some Alber King in this..?

  • Maybe but it is that left-handed playing that makes Doyle play the way he does. I hear just a tad of that Texas blues he grew up with.

  • Listen to his vibrato...

  • its close. i would say the are both on the same channel they just express it slightly differently

  • Doyle

  • Doyle Bramhall II o John Mayer?

  • Doyle

  • Doyle BY FAR!

I like Mayer but Doyle is from another planet. Clapton should be Doyle's backing guitarist, not vice versa.

  • Sorry, but I disagree. Mayer and Doyle have a long way to go before they reach EC's level of ease on the guitar.

  • Only 2 kinds of people think Eric Clapton is better than Doyle Bramhall II:

    1) Old farts that grew up with Cream.

    2) People that don't play guitar and have no clue what's actually involved in the craft.

I suggest you buy the Arc Angels album and Doyle's 'Jellycream' solo disc (Clapton has since covered a couple of songs off this album) and then come and tell me about how Doyle has 'along way to go' to reach EC's level.

  • If I'm not mistaken, music appreciation is an individual thing. I gave my opinion, you gave yours, let's leave it in that.

  • I think you are confusing personal taste with musical ability/prowess.

Whether you prefer Clapton to Bramhall is entirely subjective and down to individual taste. Whether Clapton is a better guitar player than Bramhall is a matter of technique/chops which can be judged on actual ability. Doyle is better than Clapton, period.

  • You don't know what you are talking about, and that's a fact! They are both excellent/fantastic guitarist's, YOU, cannot measure who is better by any scientific yardstick. Most people like Clapton more. So why don't you just leave it at that?

  • I'm with you on that one. Doyle has proven to everyone that he's a great guitarist, vocalist, and song writer!!

I'm sure that both Eric and Doyle were both honored to be on stage together.

  • jellycream is a cool CD by Doyle it's what turned Clapton on to him. I don't see too many other early twenty something year old's putting a platinum CD out in the name of Arc Angels back in 91, Doyle's style reigns over mine.

  • fucking sexy as hell and can play the blues like a mofo

  • Makes me want to get the old LP out the attic. I don't have one though.

  • Doyle rocks...he has his own style and thats what i love about him.

  • Wow, that is some awesome and soulful playing, normally I'm not too into Doyle's playing but this is spot on. Even Derek must have been impressed, he had a big ole grin on his face at the end.

  • It's called getting INTO the music, foo. He plays the blues, man. It's with feeling.

  • my god, he bends so much all the time that it is annoiying... more technique to blues than that

  • Your correct capo4, tuck me in the bed mother!, but he all ways has Perfect Hair!

  • Comment removed

  • well look at you making assumptions about my style.. I LOVE BLUES are you kidding me? and i saw him play live with robert cray and eric clapton (and derek trucks) and Doyles solos were embarrassing and ppl were booing him.. THAT is what im basing my opinion on ..

  • Comment removed

  • The man can play.

  • opposite.

  • Unless you can provide specific support for "opposite" I have to conclude you have a personal grudge against the guy.

  • Awesome, I am just now (at 50) starting to get into the blues. This guy is wow. Is it just me or are the blues (the music not the musicians) really really sexy. This is an AUral orgasm.

  • Que cabrón, es una guitarra para diestros tocada por un zurdo ¡sin cambiar las cuerdas!

  • Doyle knows how to PLAAAY and improvise --- Mayer only knows chords and nothing special.

  • hahahahjakjdhakdahahaahha is this doyle's little sister? that's a ridiculous statement. you cant even compare the two.

  • John Mayer ain't the beginings of a pimple on Doyle's ass.

  • Yes but Johnny's way hotter!, and I think Eric Culberson and smokingevanred, and Baby Shaun can take'm all out!

  • This guy eats John Mayer alive all day long.

  • And fuck you too, ass!

  • um... not deserved and immature. I was merely stating he doesn't do anything for me... not everyone kisses his ASS like you

  • I don't kiss his ass so fuck you.

  • @nothwind Do you realize how ignorant your statement makes you sound? Doyle is the man don't get me wrong, but John has put in his hard work and dedication. You should listen to some of Mayer's trio stuff and then tell me Doyle EATS MAYER ALIVE!!!?? no way. Just cause Mayer started out doing pop music doesn't mean he's a chump on the guitar. They are both great blues musicians period. Doyle is definitely underated tho i must say.

    -Beau

  • I gotta say, Doyle II is GREAT. I really think John Mayer is a hell of a guitarist (not a great vocalist). But there are many more guys of their generation who can hold their own with either of these guys. Check out Ronnie Baker Brooks, or Bernard Allison, Warren Haynes is a MONSTER, as well as Derek Trucks. And of course Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd are still getting better and better. The BEST new guitarist out there now is Davey Knowles from the group "Back Door Slam" 20yrs old!

  • i play the same way =] its easier than it looks rightys..lol

  • thats cuz you're good

  • @ZeppelinBowd hey i play the same way too, nothing special it feels normal :P

  • @ZeppelinBowd It doesn't look hard, Albert King was King and he played essentially a similar thing, cutting and devastating. It's what's in your heart that matters.

  • @ZeppelinBowd ahh but are you a RIGHT handed person who plays right handed upside down?

  • Anyone knows the list of tunes Doyle is recently playing at his gigs? In just a few weeks I'm going to see his concert but it's really hard to find anything about his recent playlist. Anyway. What songs he is used to play at his concerts? PROBLEM CHILD? SMOKESTACK? GREENLIGHT GIRL? ROSIE? SOUL SHAKER? Maybe: SHE'S ALRIGHT?

  • Yay! A lefty. Like myself. Good.

  • a lefty but with righty string arrangement (i.e. high e on top and low E on bottom) GENIUS!

  • Yeah- I didn't realise when I made my comment but have since read. In the tradition of Otis Rush and Albert King...great stuff!

  • You're just too young to have heard Eric Clapton when he was Eric Clapton.

  • More overrated than Jack White? I think not.

  • He is the real deal this guy man...!! Wow!!

  • I don't care who's best, I like 'em both and as long as they don't stop making music I'm happy xD

Doyle, we NEED a new album by the way! =P

  • I could not have said it better

  • John Mayer is talented in his own right but I think he is more popular than DB II simply by the music industry positioning him that way and Mayer doesn't mind playing bubblegum smacking pop tunes every now and again either whereas DB II stays with the harder stuff.

  • Why is everyone always comparing John Mayer to Doyle Bramhall as huge fans of both Id say there both great and have tons of soul plus its not about whos better

  • Doyle is far more better than Mayer. He feels the shit.

  • Hey guys, Doyle can actually smoke on the guitar better than anyone else, withMAYBE the exception of Derek Trucks. This guy can go from acoustic folk blues, to electric blues, to rock, to metal. I dont like to usually compare, but Doyle could play circles around John Mayer. Playing guitar is not like jerking off. He is building something you would listen to. Do you know who is godfather was and who taught him? SRV, and he regarded Doyle to be years ahead of so many when he was only 14.

  • i dont know.. the thing is.. doyle plays the bules. mayer plays a bit more stuff. i mean, he's an amazing acoustic guitarist as well. i mean listen to stop this train or neon the acoustic version. they're just different. so i can see how you might wanna compare them, but at the end of the day, you can't really compare them.

  • does he play with his strings upside down?

  • Yes.

  • This guy really knows how to make his guitar sing but in terms of pure technical skills he is light years behind John Mayer. But I enjoy watching Doyle, he's cool.

  • What in bloody hell, this guy has been playing since he was 5 and can run Mayer into the ground.

  • why do people compare this guy to john mayer?

they're both really good but way different.

  • DB II is the truth. He should be a household name.

  • This guy is way better guitarist and singer than John Mayer, why doesn't he get the same expoture.

  • That's like asking why the Spice Girls outsell Aretha. Well maybe not that bad haha

  • John Mayer = Overrated.

  • @bluesyly all he has to do is write a hit song - it's not about talent

  • DB II is great. I started following him several years ago because I could tell that he was the real deal. I saw the video of BB and EC doing a cover of a DB II song and was hoping that he would get some respect. He has and now he is the guitar player's guitar player. Doyle you rock, I especially enjoy "SO YOU WANT IT TO RAIN" off of the CD "Welcome." Peace.

  • SRV overrated?! DB2 and DB1 would disagree...

  • well the difference between all of you and Doyle Bramhall is that Eric Clapton thinks he's good enough to tour with him. Unless any of you have ever played to a sold out arena, I think you should shut up.

  • yup! i like both of them, eric loves him as an artist, thats why hes touring with him. not a lot of people play like him today... in fact, there isnt alot of good music today

  • Well done. Love The ARC ANGELS.

  • So bluesy.

  • You are a moron.

  • Really if you listen the original great blues guitarists, like Albert/BB/Freddie King, Albert Collins, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy etc (I don't consider Mayer a blues artist and am sick of everyone praising SRV) you will here alot of silences in their phrases - it's totally natural, like speaking. DB2 is doing this to great effect here. Sorry to call you a moron but give the originals a listen and then come back and listen to this.

  • srv is great but i think he's hendrix's replica

  • @Hellhound1in1my1ale The legendary Jazz guitarist Jim Hall once said that "Musical notes are a clever way of getting from one silence to another." ...careful about getting too close to dissin' S.R.V. though... There's a really good reason why he gets the praise he does. ;)

  • I agree, but I think this is pretty good playin.

  • man this thing is blues natural...the pause and the phrase is just the blues solo.

  • Hey thomaslovesyou person I couldnt agree more. That is exactly what I would have put. Great thought!

  • there is no doubt , the white can taste it better , even originally is black , yes or no , that's true and stop bla bla you some blind idiots

  • doyle is great.....butpeople runnin their mouths about bb or buddy guy should stop.....everyone has a style.....i bet you critics couldnt play a lick if a gun was at your head

  • slowhand111666 said it perfectly... now can everyone shutup and just listen to the music!

  • Albert King would be freakin' proud.

  • friggin Doylebo! He's spectacular.

  • i like how everyone thinks john mayers good doyle would hand john his ass in a hand basket

  • word fuggin up. totally agree lol

  • I wonder what Clapton would say about that. Hmm

  • Here's some good players, Walter Trout, the late Frank Zappa, the currently incapacitated Micky Jones from Man (legendary Welsh band), and even more unfashionable but still truly great, Del Bromham from Stray...hey, and noen of em use Austin or Texas as a cruch!!!!

  • July 6th, Antone's, Austin TX. Sold out. And yes. I got two tix. :) ARC ANGELS BABY!

  • the most ignorant thing i've read so far on a blues vid...

  • agreed

  • damn doyle plays with some soul

  • no you dicks its derek trucks...dick trucks derek dirka dirka mohammed jihad

  • Matt Schofield??!! Don't be daft he's nowhere in their league. It's Derek Trucks the slide master from the Allman Brothers.

  • looks remarkably like Schofield in the 0.999645 seconds he's being shown...

  • is that Matt Schofield or something by the drums with the SG?

  • man Doyle's got this poker face everytime he plays... Dude he's my new hero!!

  • Awesome stuff. Thanks J (RudeMoodz)

    -R-

  • Very nice.. I first saw Doyle on the Crossroad's dvd. If Eric Clapton steps aside and lets you solo then you must be doing something right. The man's solo drips with soul and class.. which is something many modern guitar players lack. I think I saw Derek Trucks back there... not a bad line up.

  • how does he play like that? it looks like his strings are flipped!

  • Yes, his strings are reversed. It's like taking a right-handed guitar, flipping it over and playing it lefty. (His low E string is on the bottom) Only a few people play that way. (Others who do: Otis Rush, Albert King, Babyface, Evie Sands)

  • You should check out Eric Gales and how he plays backwards and up-side down.

  • Man I've been a fan of Eric Gales from back in 1992 when he his old band were touring. . .he is still phenomenal despite some demons from past but hear things are good for him again!

  • Cool solo, nice Albert King style licks (sometimes sounds a bit like Jimmie Vaughan too) and Doyle's own ideas meshed together. I need to figure out those little chordal licks he uses, that I have not heard anyone else use before, for example at 2:25. Interesting to see him use a Les Paul, not his usual guitar.

  • if you listen to his work with the Arc Angels, on the song "See What Tomorrow Brings" he really channels Stevie Ray too

  • DB2 is THE SHIT!!!

  • i have never seen him use a les paul, thanks for uploading this

  • I think he started using it on the tour, for whatever reason im not sure.

  • "just to change it up"

  • wow

  • Very impressive!!! Love this Les Paul!

Nice to hear the crowd enjoying his solo.
