When I was his age I could sing in two notes and that was on a good day. Given his age,14 mind you, I think he was WOW and OMG and just GREAT!!!! A very gifted young man no question about it. Standing ovation!
Not bad, not bad at all. It sounded like he kinda ran out of gas at the end, but this is a 14-year-old kid doing a show-stopper Broadway tune. Cut him some slack. He's 20 now; I bet he could really pull it off now that's hes grown up physically (not to mention having six more years of experience and/or training).
The hell with the diction which was good. To all the armchair singers who post comments but would never dream of getting up in front of a live audience. It wasn't a pop song and he didn't sing it that way. It's a Broadway power ballad and his voice DID fit the song. It's nothing more than phrasing that stood in his was from changing this from a VERY GOOD video to an excellent one.
When all you critics have finished YOUR video showing "how it should be done" please post here so we can see you!
Just found out that the young man singing this was doing so as it was his dream and along with a bunch of B'way actors, did a concert with the Make a Wish foundation, and, I am told, that this young man is very ill and this was his wish, to sing this song in public...and I think he does it marvelously...for a 15 yo, or for any age....not to mention the nerve it took to do it live in the middle of Times Sq. No negatives here, just applause and explosive empathy.
Never Mind them, this is a fine fine start. (I don't like the breathiness [but that's me] and the end coulda been smoother, but you're miles from the worst I've heard!)
Sadly, I have to agree with a lot of the criticisms posted here. You have a very good voice, but this is not a pop song, it is a power balled sung by a person who has the chance to prove his life's work is important. This isn't show choir, get the notes right and motivate your actions from the text, not an, i-should-raise-my-arm-in-the-air-because-that's-what-people-do-here point of view. I agree with Artisian1979. This song was sung in the wrong style. Keep working on it though!
It's good, dude, but the thing is, it's all in attitude. This song has an aggressive tone in midstream. You're saying Damn what people have said; this is your chance to prove how far you've come. You're excited, energized, and at the same time defiant of all negative criticism. It's all about CAPTURING that essence through tone, delivery, and body language. Look at Rob Evans or Anthony Warlow but PLEASE ignore Hasselhoff lol. Seriously though overall this is good but has potential to be better.
This is terrible! Didn't anyone think to vocal coach this guy to sing it in the proper style. The ending sucked. Also, they could have raised the key so he wasn't struggling with the low notes. He could have stood to have had a better pianist.
I like your interpretation, but it seems too over the top...too "pop" like. I love your voice, don't get me wrong...you have a voice, use it!!! All I'm saying is that you should paint a bigger picture with this song...you're talking about your future!!!
This is sung too much like a pop singer would sing it and is also sung on the breath most of the time. Good effort though. It's not an easy song to sing, and I should know, it's one of my favourite to perform!
you have a very good voice, nice color! but you need to be in lead when you sing...don't wait for the pianist! and don't use so many inbetween breaths for expression, that sound's a litte mannered.
This high school sophomore has a great voice! He comes closest to presenting the song as a whole piece of cloth as I've seen on Broadway. Gestures and vocal theatrics can be easily modulated with a good musical director.
I see what you mean, but I made an error: I did not mean 'lisp.' I meant that his singing is too reminiscent of a pop singer with the unnecessary ornamentation and the feminine quality in the voice. Also, he wasn't working with his breath; he was fighting his breath (inhaling and making a whistling sound) which is not good. My criticisms are purely based on taste, though.
For a high school sophomore, that was damn good, dude!!! I would say you need to work on your acting while you sing, but other than that, it was lovely. :) You're a testament to the quality of the TX music ed programs!
dats ok..that's is why everyone is entitled to their own opinion...thanks..have you heard about this teen singer charice pempengco? awsome voice for her age. i think she's 15 or 16 y/o...check her out..have a good one.
I agree. This song is much to easy for you. You could have at least sung the Ab or A, depending on which key this was in, for "DAMN all the odds." Good voice. *Extremely good voice. Work on performance.
I dont prefer this song for you. You have a great voice, but, first and formost, you are a Tenor. The Part of Jekyll is truly written for a Lyric Baritone, and this is his "Power Song", where he can truly "Belt". This song is simply too easy in the high range and too forced in the low range for you.
you have an amazing voice. i would just suggest that you work on your gestures and whatnot...it was a little over done and awkward. but fantastic job otherwise.
What can I see? Singin is your passion, with every note, you're singing shows, that your're singing with your heart and your soul, every single word is like a melody of your heart! Respect! You've got all chances to become something great!!!
yaaay that was great!! so lets see, if you were a sophomore at the end of october in 2005, you should be a freshman in college now! wow, just like me. awesome! what are you up to now??
Wowie!!!!! He has such an awesome voice!! Except it was really freaky when around the end he raised his left hand really high like he was going to smack someone on the head!
This is young and good. You sing a little to much with your ego instead of your soul, hope you know what I mean. To those who say this is awful... or you are a very well trained singer, or you know nothing about singing. And if you were a well trained singer... then probably a frustrated one... you never judge 'collegues' just by saying 'awful'.
Dude, you are going to be flawless someday. You've got great potential for the big time. I really liked how you changed up some stuff, but it wasn't too much change. Nice job. Very nice. And Times Square? sweetness. Keep doin your thang man!
Pretty good. Careful not to be over the top with the acting. I think that kind-of pulls away from the strenght of the vocals. it will mean more if you do less. It didn't match the arrangement of the song, that's all. (and it looked a little too camp) Other than that, very good. You're on your way!
i was impressed, but you don't need to pound every note with vibratto and riff everything. if the writer wants his song to be song with tons of riffing, they'd write it in the song.
I have been obsessed with this musical for a long time, and we did it at our local theatre last summer, and don't get me wrong this kid is good but NOBODY will ever compare to the man who played Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde Mr. Donald Dallaire. The most talented man I have ever met in my life!!!!!
May I just point out that, that this is a show chior competition, not a theater competition. Granted this sond is from a musical, but as performed. I think it is quite good for a high school competition.
Really...cut back on the little vocalizations and riffs. That stuff belongs in shitty shows like High School Musical, not Jekyll and Hyde. Other than you have a good voice, but a good voice isn't the only thing that sells the song. This song is a power ballad, not a pop song. You have a lot of potential, and you're young. You have a lot of good things going for you.
The point is...why is it not a pop song (independent of the fact that he's not that good)? The album Jekyll and Hyde Ressurection are pop versions. Obviously the composer is okay with it being a pop song. What are these continuing boxes we must put everything in?
This seems like you're in High School, and still practicing, but if all the moronic flamers could back off and stop expecting Anthony Warlow out of everyone, I was EXTREMELY impressed with this, and in my personal opinion, you're the greatest ameteur to have sung this on YouTube.
You are horrible, but you are making the song too upbeat, it is a turning point in the musical and should be sung darker. You aren't believing in the song.
overall it wasn't terrible. You have pretty good control. But I was disappointed that you breath right before your last note. You could've done it without that last breat. but nice work.
There are some songs and shows that are not meant to be soulfully sung, this is most definitley one of them. It loses its sense of power. Well sung for the most part though, especially for your age.
I really like this song and appreciate the way you perform it. You've learned how to work the soulfull low notes in the beginning - watch your high notes, though - it's easy to oversing this type of song. You've got a great future.
Not bad! Nice to see someone strike out on their own. Keep working. You have talent. Study and practice, practice, practice. Then, practice more. It's the only way to get better. best of luck to you!
I agree with nate man. Anyway you sound like you have the focus and placement of one who is aware how to sing healthy. Really that is all "classical trainning will be able to offer you for Broadway singing." So either you have already studied vocal technique in some way or another or just really gifted. Your voice is very beautiful. You can afford to be more daring musically. Dynamics, phrasing, tempos ect. Just experiment around and see what you find.
You're a softer version of Anthony Warlow. You should work on strengthening your voice and use your abdomen to belt. Other than that, I really enjoyed it. See you on Broadway, kid.
I don't know what hte comment above about being 'classically trained' is all about... I'm a classical singer, and I'd never make it on Broadway--they don't care for opera voices. But you sound great! You've got a future kid.
I agree. i'm a classical singer too. you don't necessarly need to be "classically trained" when it comes to broadway and the west end. You just need a good strong breath and pure talent. this is one great voice. well done.
You're a good singer...but I do think your voice is more suited towards pop singing rather than Broadway...especially not a powerful tenor song like this...You did a good rendition, but I would rather hear you singing pop then Broadway until you become a bit more clasically trained...trust me, it helps. Other than that, you have a good ear for music. I can tell from the licks you made up yourself. Most of them worked well. Keep it up.
I liked the way you sang it better than most of the profesionals...wow I cant spell, but that doesnt matter!!! YOU ARE GOOD!!! You really should contuinue with your voice!!! I found the music for my Baritone and its awesome!!!
You've definitely got some talent. I like everything about your performance. I can feel your emotions connecting to the music, which is sometimes all that really matters in a performance. Your voice is very strong and clear. By the way, will you marry me? :D
Make sure you keep the pop and musical theatre genres separate, because they are. Impressive for your age, but I would be careful of all of the awkward hand movements, if they don't feel natural, they won't look natural, also, the shaking of your head. Don't worry, range and breath support will come with age. Nice job though, just steer clear of too many riffs in this style.
Nice Voice. I noticed the riffs that were different than the show. Very Nice making it your own. Though mostly all i could hear was your voice, and not soo much of the Piano. Watch a couple of riffs, where you move in to out of tune notes. Overall very well done.
Wow. I was a bit skeptical when I first stumbled across this video but I'm happy to say that you definitely impressed me. You did a wonderful job and picked a great song. :)
work on the hand placements...very nice voice though

lets just take a step back here. How old is the kid 14? Highly inexperienced in terms
of age. I think given those factors I recon he makes a bloody good job of a marathon
song. Provided he dosen't burn out he'll make a fine singer. The breathing and diction will come with maturity.

See you on Broadway, kid.

average performance... a very low version of the song.

Keep it up.
