You may need to unlock more characters to access the other events.

you need to unlock luigi by ending the first level of adventure mode with a 2 in the time like 02:32.57. it's all about the 4th number so: xx:x2.xx then simply beat the game and luigi is yours

i killed him like this once too and i did it in about 8 seconds lol. after that i killed him twice although i died once. it takes forever to kill bowser though (took me a blastoise and a lugia at the same time to kill him at over 350%)!
