If you know what they are dancing, it'd probably break your heart more--they're dancing a pas de deux, which is danced by two characters in love. I think it makes the ending even more powerful--they know they can't be together, and they're okay with that.

In my opinion the ending was just as it was supposed to be. Sure it was bittersweet and to a point depressing but it was just the perfect conclusion for this series, and in a way, a sort of happy ending. So that's why I think this "different" ending was very very good and possibly unique. ^_^
