Why does he always look to his right when he plays? Is he winking at a particular girl in the audience? If he focused more on playing, and less on looking around, then he might have given a better performance. Here he just winged it, a very half-hearted attempt, honestly a pretty bad performance considering what I think he's capable of..
He plays very well indeed! A clean player but ought to have more respect for the music and the composer. He probably knows that, I'm sure. Anyways, I'd rather see a smiling violinist than the opposite such as Vengerov who seems to suffer the agonies of the d.... , well, you know what I mean. Just my thoughts here. I like the performance, really. ;- )
i would like him a lot more if i had blindfolds on because he acted very unprofessional because he took this performance way too much of a joke. i mean how are people going to take him seriously even if Itzak perlman or ida haendel said how good he is if all he is going to do is goof off on stage. with a sound like that i would not be acting that way on stage during a performance when many people have paid money to watch him perform. his sound was terrific and intonation was great. just grow up
@andrijanasdta I agree with you, I can't feel any moments of contemplation when he plays, moments when a "finer" musician works on his own taste instead of playing it like a study. To me he seems to make himself a slave to the audience. He loves performing but doesn't seem connected to himself. I may sound fokin' cocky, sorry.
@Snoobiz of course! Perlman is the best, but this guy is really good,
quite apart from their appearance, and his show a bit exaggerated and the bad reputation that was created with his arrangements of popular music is an excellent violinist, I agree with you, definitely not Perlman, nor Heitfez or Francescatti ... but it is one of the greats of the new generation ...
@Lolitacore pop music arrangements is kinda downer, almost like selling out, but on the other hand, as long as he mixes pop with classical, by giving the second more exposure to the laymen, he is giving some service to good music at least.
@xConc3pt I am not a fan of David Garrett. I agree that his general aim is to show of his technical skill, but I think that he is perfect in this piece. It's meant to be played with a sort of careless ease, almost a sort of humor.
I love this video, he's such a brilliant violinist. The whole point of this performance is humor. Imagine how long he had to work to be able to do that.
@246trinitrotoluene Who cares? Well, if you're going to play a piece, do it the right way (the way the composer wanted it to be played or within the boundaries). David Garrett plays with none of the nuances of Sarasate's style of time.
TLCooper I don't know what your gripe with him is. Just because he turned more "pop" to try to appeal to the mainstream audience doesn't mean he needs to be crucified by the rest of the more serious classical community -- that's one of the reasons there is a rift in current society.
By saying he's not even close to the average orchestral player of our time, you're just not being fair. I have seen plenty of strong orchestras, and is definitely better than what you make him.
Doesn't this piece just sound like a piece to fun with? Yes, there is that section where he nods his head, but once it gets back to the other, more 'serious' stuff, he is back to serious playing. If you watch his other videos, he is all happy in the lighthearted songs and very serious in the serious songs.
I perceive his playing as vain and superficial. It just bores me, as he has no deeper message which could fill my heart as a listener. His playing leaves me empty. However, undoubtedly he will draw the attention of some people in his audience who never got in contact with violin music before to this wonderful instrument, so some of them might finally discover the true art of violin playing hearing other violinists. The rest of his audience may be satisfied with his playing, and that's also fine.
@xConc3pt His technique is good. But there are many out there who are much better. David is the type of player who plays for people who know little about the violin and they praise his name. If he were to play like that in Avery Fischer Hall where a quarter of the audience has technique that is just as good, he'd get laughed off the stage.
@weirdyist Honestly you cannot take what Perlman or Ida says about a young violinist at face value. I have met both of them and they are very nice people. I couldn't even imagine either of them ripping on someone outside of a masterclass situation. If you think that this guy is so great, listen to James Ehnes, Yura Lee, Augustin Hadelich, Isabelle Faust, Ilya Gringolts...and get back to me.

hopefully he grows up, he plays well but he is too immature. Also him being immature is also causing some of his tone to suffer.

He's such a funny violinist, I find this really hilarious because of the way he does it with the "oh this is nothing" attitude.

Come on people...
True that he's not a "first tier" player (Perlman, Heifetz, etc), but you people are being overly harsh with your criticism of a fine performance.
Is it the best... no... but who really cares...

I don't care that he turned more "pop". I care that he didn't do justice to what the composer wanted. Respect the composer.
Also, most high tier orchestral musicians are better than him.

@violatione - I guess you consider yourself more expert than these people.
"He (DG) is a wonderful violinist with excellent technique and natural musicianship. He will always perform with artistry" (Itzhak Perlman)
"I consider David Garrett one of the finest young violinists in the world"
(Ida Haendel)
Watch him playing when he was only 13.
