I have not heard this song for at least 35 years, and I appreciate it more now. Great Lonnie D. The old Skiffle groups with the old washboard and tea chest double bass. Great.
Thanx for this i have also sang this since i was a kid, and had friends ask what is that song?? ''Never herd of it'' oh well they anit lived love it thanx.....xxx
I am looking for another Lonnie Donegan song with similar themes but slower that I swear I have heard on this here youtube but I can't remember what it is called and I'm going slightly wrong now. Please any suggestions as to what it might be would be appreciated! Thanks
I AGREE WITH ALL COMMENTS HERE :)) But, just found it so strange, that after all the years that have passed & the history, that a Song, extolling a person , who, murdered a young Girl, would become a Folk song & still be sung ??? with his name as the Title,, perhaps, better Laura's name should be included ??
Fantastic....my favourite Lonnie track and easily the best version. great vocal and wirebrush harmonies, takes me back to when I was a kid playing all my dads skiffle 78's....brilliant
Yes I'm not positive, but I just looked at it again and it sure does look like him. In any event it's a great track, great video and even greater saga.
This is the first song I remember singing, aged five , standing on the bed "playing" the back of my hairbrush. I knew all the words and melancholy they were !
same here ... I loved this song, one of the first pop songs that I knew the words to and kept singing ... it was another song that me mam thought was inapropriate (is that how ya spell it?)

@yukonnahanni
if you think is strange, try listening to Strange Fruits by Billie Holiday.

Best version of this song.

One of the beauties of folk music is that 10 different artists can sing the same song and there will be 10 totally different interpretations of it.

Vielen Dank...

That's Van Morrison in that picture of the tree fellows at the end. The fellow on the right.

Surely Van the Man can never look so grumpy as that chap.....but then again from a different angle !!!!!!
