Bob Cole: "Berezin around the net, Berezin trying to come out, he does, shoots, oh what a chance....SCORES!! Mats Sundin has won this game with only 52 seconds left..."
This really gives me goosebumps but last time i checked the 52 seconds had to run out before they won the game...
The Leafs did have a horn those days...It just want as loud back then. Then they changed it a few years after to where it wouldn't be drowned out by the crowd noise.
Once of my most favourite Leafs Steve Thomas was an underrated player at his time. He was an all-round player who was extremely fast, highly skilled and tough.
This game was nuts. It was utterly depressing watching 2 shutout playoffs games (after leafs had missed the playoffs for a couple years), and then Thomas scores on a fluff back hander to resurrect the team. Then Sundin scores out of nowhere and its euphoria again, playoff hockey was back!!
hahaha pat quinn no reaction whatsoever to him is just another goal , never seen a coach so collectively calmed even during a goal of his own team , hard to read that dude .
Leafs most exciting 99-02 berezin, sundin, korolev, mogilny, karpatsev, cujo, domi, johnson, hoglund, king, berard, list keeps going this is when hockey was crazy here the last time, even tho we didnt win it was always worth the thrill
I agree, 1998/09 to 2001/02 Leaf teams were the most exciting in the Pat Quinn years. The 03 and 04 teams was an aging bunch in decline. But Hoglund? lol. The only reason I remember him is because of all his miscues (anyone could've scored 29 goals on Sundin's wing in 2000 - he probably also missed 50 empty nets). You could've mentioned Yushki, Kabby, Markov, Stumpy, McCabe, or Roberts before him.
this is when hockey was hockey. bring back the old rules! both the Flyers and Leafs dominated the league back with the old rules. best hockey fans in canada and america.
True about the fans - but i'd say Devils , Wings, and Aves were the dominant teams of the great (so-called) dead puck era (1994/95-2003/04). The Flyers, Leafs, Stars and Sabres were the next best. I also much dislike many of the new rules following the 2004 lockout. It was great when there were only 2-4 power plays per team in a game. The games were more intense, and had more flow. After 05, the games are a lot more loosy, goosy. Don't even get me started on the lousey shootouts.
@RockinFlyers If they "bring back the old rules" then we're going straight back to "clutch-n'-grab" hockey, would you like that?
But hot DAMN, I miss these times:-( Hopefully, the new-look Leafs will soon be a playoff contender again, because the buzz will be back at the ACC like you cannot believe:-D
@kevick19 Seems so hard to believe, but it sure was. Maybe when the Leafs finally get back to the playoffs we'll have crowds like this again, as season tickets aren't carried over to the post-season, thank God.
i remember watching this series, the leafs scored 6 goals in the entire series i think, i read somewhere that was the lowest scoring series of any winning team in years
The Leafs were actually outscored 11-9 in the 6 game series, yet still managed to win. This is mainly because the Flyers two victories were rather lopsided (3-0 and 5-1), while the Leafs victories were all low scoring, one-goal affairs (three of the Leafs wins were by scores of 2-1, and the other one 1-0).
actually i was wrong, excuse my dyslexia, i meant to put 9 goals in six games
game one flyers win 3-0
game two leafs win 2-1
game three- leafs 2-1
game four flyers 5-2
leafs win game 5 in OT 2-1
and the leafs win game 6 1-0 with one minute in regulation left on a disputable call that made the flyers owner go banana sandwich on the media about the refs
I remember watching this game. I was so pissed off and when Thomas scored I had tears coming down my face. Then my dad changed the fucking channel and I was bugging him to change it. I saw the celebration of the second goal and said WTF DAD! Anyways great memories
I don't mind the goal horn @ the ACC myself, although if the Leafs ever play this good again, we won't need to worry about that because the fans will take care of the noise level...:-D
i remember joe bowen almost screaming his lungs out on the thomas goal..best call ever he made
i still have the fondest memories of that year 1998-99; it was a miracle turn around year; leafs sucked for years; and became an awesome team overnight w/ cujo and quinn..they were the highest scoring nhl team that year!!!!!
Amen! Let the crowd decide what's worth making noise about. Compare Stumpy's goal here to some meaningless goal in December. The fans go apeshit for one and clap politely for the other. But according to the horn they're exactly the same.
AH, the good ol' days for us Leafers...not so much now...:-(
That '99 playoff run was quite entertaining; I do kinda agree that the Buds could've won the East that year, but they ran into the Dominator, who was on a white hot run as were the Sabres as well. But it was fun to watch while it lasted...:-)
Its scary to say (being a Minnesota fan)- but this was one of the best things I have ever seen. I was actually there in the upper deck on the blue line of these goals. They take their hockey seriously up in CA and these moments are why. No where else do the rich lower deck folks scream with the upper deck grunts quite like in TO.
Funny how the Leafs beat two great teams in Philly and Pittsburgh then they lost to those slouch Sabres. Buffalo got hot at the right time, give em credit. The Leafs shouldve won the east in 1999, but not to be.
Ahhh...back in the day when a Leaf lead with 52 seconds left was a sure thing. Times have changed...
