Why does everyone hate Rick Berman? I mean, it's not like he took a franchise beloved by millions and ran it into the ground by turning it into something god awful, lifeless, generic, and almost completely unrecognizable and antithetical to the original vision of its creator and millions of loyal fans who grew up and changed the world based on that vision.... Oh, right. Nevermind.
@xJoeEDangerouslyx .Berman replace a normal, relatable character like Kes with a silicon model stuffed inside a tight silver "Lost In Space" uniform, aptly named 7 of 9. (probably Rick's inside joke of his casting couch where he chose the 7th of 10 women he banged). He is what is wrong w/ Hollywood, Every "actor" is a former model or a bigwig "relative" like Jonah "I despise common people. They make me throw up" Hill aka: Jonah Hill Feldstein- the newly Golden Globe nominee. What a F'n joke.
Nemesis was great what r u talking about.......Classic Villian lots of action.....a Showdown that rivaled the Wrath of Khan....and a Dramatic Farewell to Data that even kept it open for a sequel and possible return of the character......It was way better than Insurrection or Generations IMO
I'm sorry to sound like a typical youtube commenter, but some of you guys just don't get it, you ignorant fools (well, typical youtube commenters would have said you fuckin morons or something like that).
Rick Berman was te left hand of Gene Roddenberry, and he is Star Trek almost as much as Gene. Without his work and dedication, there would not have been much of TNG and NOTHING after it! So why the hell do so many peope not give him credit? If you like Star Trek, you MUST appreciate Berman!
Some of the people who know who he is and was dislike him because after the death of Roddenberry, he spun things off in directions Roddenberry might not have gone in.
I think Berman's a genius. I grew with Trek under his direction throughout the 90's and early 2000's. Ok the Enterprise finale was crappy, but I still enjoyed that show as well as ST: Nemesis.
I think Berman's a genius. I grew with Trek under his direction throughout the 90's and early 2000's. Ok the Enterprise finale was crappy, but I still enjoyed that show as well as ST: Nemesis.
Its tough to blame Berman for the demise of Trek on TV. He did a great job keeping it on the air longer than most would have done and even to this day it stands out more so than other TV show. It has more ethics and morals running through it than most. Also, Roddenberry actually approved of DS9 before he passed away. When TNG finished Trek needed a new edge to keep it fresh and interesting and Rick gave it that with DS9. However, I agree that it was time for Rick to pass the torch on.
Roddenberry chose Rick Berman to carry on his legacy, and after he died, Berman pretty much fucked him. Roddenberry was the main person keeping Star Trek in check, and once he passed away Rick Berman started taking some serious liberties with the franchise. And I can't stress the 'Enterprise' thing enough. Not to mention the fact that every interview I've ever seen this man in he's acted like a complete stuck up and cocky bastard with a stick up his ass. If I were Paramount I'd want him gone too
Star Trek most certainly doesn't need Rick Berman for them to have another series. It simply needs good writers who are true to Roddenberry's vision, and take the show back to what it was to begin with, which is an optomistic view of the future. Unlike Deep Space Nine. Berman hasn't always done what's best for Trek, I mean he let 'DS9' and 'Enterprise'happen, which were pretty dark and a far cry from Roddenberry's vision. As far as I'm concerned those two shows AREN'T Star Trek at all.
Star Trek was dead before JJ Abrams gave it a shot electricity to the heart earlier this year, and Rick Berman was the one who killed it. I mean JJ, a guy who admits he was never really a Star Trek fan until he did the movie, did a better job of staying true to Roddenberry's invisionment better than Berman has of late. And if I remember correctly, Berman never wrote nor directed a single episode of trek, he was simply an exec that okayed everything, and occasionally came up with a crappy idea,
Berman seems to done to Star Trek post TNG, what Rick McCallum did to Star Wars post Jedi.( I really think he is more responsible for the prequel's "atmosphere" than Lucas, if you watch interviews and special features I get the feeling that he was like Grima Wormtongue and Lucas was Theodan. After watching the new Star Trek Lucas must be kicking himself. and debating if he should just redo the entire thing.
Each new series was less entertaining than the previous one it got to the point that the last one was really bad. I read somewhere once that an artist or a writer should be judged by their best work and not their worst. I try to keep that in mind when Bermans name comes up.
Rodenberry himself admitted shortly before his death that the new show made the old guys look like we knew nothing. Under Bermans guidance TNG helped launch 3 spin off series, 4 movies, and bring credibility to the entire syndicated industry. Unfortunately, Paramounts greed took over and allowed Berman to run the franchise into the ground.
To expand on Shakeyphil's comment, Rick Berman deserves credit for his contributions to the Star Trek universe. I am the first to admit that the franchise needed new leadership (so far J.J. looks like the right choice). I was in high school during TNGs first season and I remember how bad it was. The show was under Gene Roddenberrys guidance and I remember older fans ripping it apart. Once Berman took over, TNG evolved into an outstanding TV show. It was fresh, intelligent and entertaining
i guess berman did suck, but he was smart enough to get ron moore and brannon braga involved and i think both of them were creative and added alot. it all went to shit after deep space nine. paramount themselves have no integrity, they kept funding the shit and now they hate him
Brannon Braga was the absolute worst writer. His stories were crap. Captain Janeway mutates into a salamander and back again by the end of the episode? Please! Ridiculous as well as derivative because he did the same damn story previously.
Berman was responsible for Braga and should never have let him pen any episodes. The team in general just never understood what Trek was about.
I knew Berman was an ignorant douche when he compared TNG to "Connecticut" as opposed to "Brooklyn".. Star Trek is about idealism & progress.. its not a god damn steam punk series, and anyone that tries to rape it ala the new Battlestar Galactica, needs to find something sharp and trip on it.
Rick Berman couldn't keep up with changing times. I think that's why Star Trek is dead because people where moving forward and ultimately forgot about Star Trek. And Berman couldn't keep up.
So Paramount let him go, and I'm glad that they did because most of his Star Trek shows were downright terrible (DS9, Voyager, Enterprise). I lost interest.
Berman can be credited for taking over for Roddenberry successfully for years. But ultimately he is what destroyed the franchise. In my opinion, all of the series were good for the most part. People decided not to give Enterprise a chance. But ultimately it had some superb moments. He tried to create a scapegoat for the demise of Enterprise (Manny Coto). It was unsuccessful, and rightfully so.
Honestly I have way more respect for Gene Roddenberry over Rick Berman, Rick Berman just extended the Star Trek lore but didn't do a good job at doing just that. Gene Roddenberry created the legacy and has more respect than Rick Berman ever will. If Gene was alive he would be welcomed with open arms on the Paramount Studios lot, unlike Berman.
I agree , enterprise season three was kick ass ,one of the best season in the franchise but no one saw it.The fact of the matter is when it comes to star trek people don't like change (a new show ,new charaters) I myself didn't watch it when it was on T.V.
DS9 was my favourite. Sometimes i think a fresh perspective is needed in cases like this, so i say good luck to Berman for some of the great things he has done, and goodbye.
I can't understand why he jokingly called it "deep sleep9" when it had far more action, character progression and plot twists in 1 season than Voyager had in the entire series. The DS9 crew evolved, but Ensign Harry Kim was the same flat character from the first episode, to the last.
You all have either forgotten or were too young to remember that at the start Berman was amazing, creative and loved through the late 80s and into the 90s. He made Paramount a lot of money.
XD @ Garrett Wong and Marina Sirtis calling DS9 "Deep Sleep Nine". TNG had its share of shitty episodes, and there are entire SEASONS of voyager that suck ass... so yeah, not much logic in their words... but I do agree Berman sucks.
TNG became so much worse after Berman took over. DS9 was great only thanks to other people who were making it like Ira Steven Behr and Ronald D. Moore. if it was all up to Berman it would have sucked like Voyager, Enterprise and Nemesis
Manny Coto is da man. he turned Enterprise from a boring stupid show into what it should have been from the start. too bad they brought him in too late. they should have also let him make "nemesis" it would have been so much better than the awful thing they called a movie
That was a rather direct statement! They ought to bring in the guy who did the fourth season of Enterprise. He did a spectacular job, unfortunately it was (in the eyes of Paramount) too little too late.
Hiya! I was sitting in the row just infront of you at memorabilia! Im not on the clip, but i remember you filming this. I was actually wondering if you were going to put it on the net! I filmed them walking on stage, but my camera can't record sound unfortunatly, so I haven't bothered to upload it yet.
Do you have anymore clips from the other stage talks or more from this one?
LMAO! what a coincidence! I have the full show saved, it's about 190Mb at the minute, so will be looking at getting it onto my site when I've got some free time.
sure not a problem, unfortunately this is the only stage show I got to record as I was one of the exhibitors there so didn't get chance to really see much of the others. i do have photographs of this and previous years stage shows though (though these a recent edition to the show after Expo bought Memorabilia off Henry Cook), such as the Babylon 5 one last year.
