HELP! I can detect my target wifi in WICD manager, but when i do the 'airmon-ng wlan0' part, it doesn't detect the wifi, no information is show. also the next step 'airodump-ng -c (channel) -w (file name) --bssid (bssid) wlan0' , it doesn't even show the name of the wifi, or the channel , the table is there but it's empty.

If you want to change the root password, so that you can just use su instead of sudo, type as follows into a terminal once backtrack has loaded:

"sudo passwd root"

it will then ask you to enter a new password. This will also work if your using a Live CD/DVD but each time you restart or shutdown the computer you will need to retype this.

@13royalknight login as in terminal or to desktop enviroment? in a terminal type "sudo su" then type in the password "toor" and it should bring you to root. you will know if you are root if the end marker is a number sign (#). i don't know how to help you to login though besides a re-installation of backtrack.

for those of you who aren't aware of what exactly he's doing, all this is doing is:

1> changing your mac (spoofing it)

2>sniffing AP's and their mac address's

3>"listening in" on the channel of the AP

4>associating yourself with the network

5>collecting initialization vectors (IV's) to crack later

6> cracking the IV's

no magic required.

also a note to some people: you can get IV's faster and also avoid mac filtering by spoofing your mac address as 1 of the computers on the network.

It doesn't really matter what the PWR is. I guess some wireless cards are not able to show how strong a signal is. My PWR also says 0, so I just look on my other laptop to see which network has the best strength.

I used my lap-top to crack a WEPkey, it accually worked. Even though there was absolutely no PWR. So, I say: just continue and see what happens.
