You're right, WWII didn't begin in 1939 for China. It began on Sep. 18, 1931, when the Japanese created the Manchurian Incident as a pretext for the invasion of Manchuria. Six years later, the Imperial Japanese Army concocted another incident at the Marco Polo Bridge on July 7, 1937 as a pretext for the all out invasion of China.

Hong Kong and Singapore's success in democracy is primarily due to their size. Small size in population often means little dispersion in citizens, which makes it easy to manage.
Taiwan is not a successful example of domecracy. If it was, Chen would have never become the president.
