A very funny performance is when he ran circles around Tony Galento When he beat up Carnera....he had to beg the ref to stop it...He was not a mean human
Wish they would make the real life story of MAX BAER. I would call it A CLOWN IN THE RING. Max just entertained everyone that came to see him fight. He was a walking party. He loved everyone.
Ron Howard blew it. The story shouldn't have been about good (Braddock) vs a supposedly "evil" Max Baer (who in actuality was as fun-loving and friendly a champion as we've ever had), the story should have been how someone hard-working and serious though with meager talents (Braddock) won the championship from a fighter (Baer) who was as gifted as they come but never took it seriously enough to stay on top for long. That was the truth, not the fabrication portrayed in Howard's Cinderella Man.
Casting Max Baer as a malevolent villain was like casting Leon Spinks as an international spymaster. It's always been said that Baer was too fun-loving for his own good. If he had taken boxing as seriously as the character in the movie, his natural talent would have kept him champ for years.
It's unfortunate, but probably shouldn't be surprising. Films often change historical details in dramatizations for dramatic reasons. A well known saying in Hollywood is, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story."
Very good story of Max Baer , sets the record straight. First time I've ever seen his daughter in a interview. Maudie is indeed gracious . Max jr , I have seen on several interviews. I still remember seeing him on the Mike Douglas show when I was about 12 and he stated that if you use DRUGS, You're A DAMN FOOL! It made a impression on me and I tried to avoid them ever since. Thanks Max and Maudie!
